Hi, Guys.

I am driving from Perth to Melbourne, via Adelaide and Geelong. For the reasons - see below. I am leaving Perth on Wednesday morning, 30 September and should arrive in Geelong on Saturday evening, 3rd October. I am staying at some holiday park. If anyone is around, come along and say "Hi". (Drop me a pm and I will let you know where.)

Reason for the trip: My wife has taken my daughter to the National Irish Dance competition in Geelong (of all places!) this week. It just happens to be our 25th Wedding Anniversary on 6th October, the day after the dance competition ends. She said she would really like to drive the Great Ocean Road from Melbourne to Adelaide.

This just happens to be hailed as one of the greatest roads in the world. I am fortunate to own one of the greatest GT cars the world has ever seen. My wife even saw the obvious connection. We just have to drive it in the GTR!! We are going to have a couple of nights in Melbourne (which will be the romantic bit, on our own!) and then head along the Great Ocean Road. Say "Hi" to us on the Great Ocean Road!

So, first of all, I need to get me and the car to Geelong - which is 3,411 km from our house (approximately!).

So there you go.

Cheers. :P

You'd enjoy the GOR more in a MX-5 - it's heavily speed restricted/policed these days... which is rather unfortunate hehe.

But ye, overall a fair bit of driving for you.

I would have chucked it on the train personally, less risk of having the pride and joy destroyed by a roo on the bor ;)

I bet i know at least one or two of the families that will be around/involved the Irish Dancing comp if its in Geelong...

Probably a good portion of my family lol, my Aunties used to teach for many years, not sure if they still do but id imagine they would.

We have out clubs 5th b'day which a fair few are attending, so i won't be free that day :P

On great ocean road speed limit is 80km (except at towns) which is more than fast enough on the real tight sections.

I'd change all your oils and fluids before leaving Perth.

Your worst enemy for the whole trip would be stone chips :P

Good luck with it.

long drive mate...goodluck with it!

Now thats a fair drive, Im thinking about heading up to the gold coast in the r33, could spell trouble.

Have fun and enjoy your drive :D

yer i was thinkin of doing the same thing too, but petrol will be a killer..i drove to adelaide in my n/a a few years back....6 full tanks there and back i think lucky split it between my mates in my car.

Happy 25th Wedding Anniversary on Tuesday Canute! (Oops that reminds me - my 30th Wed Anniv on 29/12)

GOR on a long weekend? More like a passing parade along that strip - especially since 1 of the apostle stacks collapsed this week.

Ppl want to have a geeza. A few more clutch changes methinks.

Perhaps a few nice pics of your car at Bells Beach at one end + Pt Campbell at the other?

6 Full tanks!!!?? f**k that thing must be running pretty rich considering even from my part of town adelaide is like 750km away. Maybe 1.5 tanks for me to get there from a turbo.

what an awesome plan! Now if I understand this right the comp finishes day before cup day then you have a couple nights in melbourne & then you tackle the great ocean road correct? If so then you should be right to avoid most of the tourists & get a decent run.

When your driving back I suggest taking a detour through some of the inland twisty roads too. Can turn off g.o.r. at Skene's Creek & then left onto Turtan's Rd, its very tight & twisty with forest to edge of road & is a fantastic drive. Then head out toward Lavers Hill & onto Otway Fly then back towards Apollo Bay. Its a stunning drive & really worth the trip if you have the time.

You'll have a great time driving it just be aware of the coppers, especially near towns, (they hide in bushes, use helicoptors, etc) & be aware of other drivers/riders, a lot think the centre lane markings are more of a 'guide'...

cheers, Tim

back is gonna be a bit sore after that trip! autralian roads, i dont belive the VspecII was built with that in mind haha.

i drove to Warrnambool and around town for 2days then back home, filled up again on Kings way. N/A days

agree'd

that drive is worth skipping the GOR for IMO... apollo bay -> melbourne is a shit drive... the back way is awesome

Thanks for the comments, once more guys.

Tim, I will take a look at your suggestion. Meanwhile, I am writing from the Norseman Railway Hotel, thanks to the miracle of a Telstra NextG thingo stuck into my laptop! More info in my thread in the WA forum, if you're interested. Main thing is that my back is not too bad, which for me is good! Added a folded towel to sit on, which helped.

Not sure NextG will work at the Nullabor Roadhouse tomorrow night - we will see.

Cheers. :(

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
