If you're talking about 'reality' here rather than 'legality', if the rear lenses are 'clear', I'd expect that you wouldn't get pinged for a 'fog light' and that HP would assume it's a reversing light that has a 'short' (but hey, that's still defectable eh?)

The rear fog light is 'red'. The rear fog light according to the R34 Owner's Manual carries a 55W bulb which is very bright.

Changing the rear lens from clear to red? You'd get pinged for it if it's on whilst weather is NOT inclement I expect!

And for the OP, the Owner's Manual states that it IS a fog light.

Some, GT-Ts didn't come with the rear fog light as an option, so members have opted to go purchase the "red lense" like the GTR and replaced it, i'm assuming the bulb wasn't actually changed and a button wasn't put in the cabin to use it as a fog light.

So i'm saying that, it pretty much is just a clear light that has had a red cover put over it.

I believe that all R34 GTs had twin reversing lights. One of these could be converted thru a sparkie to a fog light and get a red lens accordingly.

The R34 GT-R has 1X reversing light + 1 fog light.

Question:

Do you think those other people with 34s that get that light changed to a red light will get picked up for it?

It'll be the same bulb as the white light one, so not necessarily a fog light? If a fog light is determined by its bulb.

So is a fog light defined by its colour or bulb?

If a fog light increases visibility, is it the light cover (the red) with a regular light bulb behind it increasing visibility? Its like another break light.

You're thinking way too deeply.

1. You can't have a continuous on, white light facing rearwards in any conditions.

2. You can't have a continuous on, rear facing high wattage (50W) red, unless you're driving in fog conditions.

Its def a fog light.

Alot/most/all of the Euro cars have them, and to be fair, they are f**king annoying to be following during the night. Especially if your driving a long distance, its like staring into a laser pointer.

I can understand that the majority of people dont have any idea they are on, nor would have any idea its there. so getting pulled up and told about it would be better than getting slapped with a ticket.

These will operate like any other car with factory fitted fog lights, it comes on when ever you turn the fog/driving lights on, the fact that you didnt even know that you could turn them off and have been dricing around with them permantly on annoying the shit out of every one is enough for you to get a fine in its self, for some one who spends 40k+ on a car you really should have a better understanding of what all the switches do, thats one of the first things i do when i buy a car, play with all the switches to see what sort of gadgets it has, although most of the time i will already know what they do if its a car i REALLY want to buy.

While the light can be switched on and off independantly the light will only work when the headlights are on. They dont work when the parkers are on or in any other condition. According to QLD transport defination this actually makes it a "driving" light, not a fog light. As was demonstrated by the cops that showed me the "fog" lights on their commodore can be switched on and off independantly of the headlights and parkers.

I bought the car to drive it. Not to play with all the switches, although the MDF held my interest for about 2 minutes. Like ive already said, i dont drive the car that often at night so again like ive said, this is why ive not noticed it before.

The issue is not blinding the poor farker behind you on a clear day. You can have the red lens with no prob whatsoever. The only time it will become a problem is if in fact it is switched on and there's no fog.

In your case, being that its just a lens, you don't even have the option to turn it on, and it will only be on when you engage reverse, therefore it won't ever be a "fog" light, so you can never get done for it :-)

How many Hyundai drivers have you seen with their annoying fog lights on? I'm actually glad the police are taking back fog lights as seriously as rear fog lights because they're both annoying as f**k to other drivers. I suspect in most cases the driver doesn't even realise they're on - but that's absolutely no excuse for it.

Those hyundais with those bright ass rear fog lights piss me the shit awf! :action-smiley-069:

God knows how many times I've been following one just to get annoyed and try and get ahead of them... It's distracting and blinding!

Pretty much all Excel drivers. It seems like buying an Excel automatically signs you up to the photon brigade, since an Excel driving around with the fog light off is the exception rather than the rule. It's a distraction as a human's focus is naturally drawn to bright lights in the dark, and when you get closer it kills your night vision as a result.

It seems like using the rear fog light on clear nights is directly proportional to cluelessness. Low-spec E36 BMW owners are almost as bad when it comes to that rear foglight. I don't understand how BMW owners can find that little button hidden in the switchgear just above their right knees, but can't seem to locate the giant f**king indicator stalk on the steering column.

well last friday night i was in the city and noticed that my headlights wernt that bright, i jumped out and found my passenger headlight was burnt. so it was my decission to turn my lower driving lights on (r33 series 2) just to componsate for the light being out. i was drivin down george street and i see this cop car chuckin a u-turn with the lights going ! he got stuck in sum traffic few cars behind me but soon as he got the chance he came behind me and pulled me over. he started going on about the "spot lights" i go "lower driving lights" officer. he goes no the fog lights were blinding him and should only be used in the appropriate weather conditions. he got my license details, got breath tested, asked if i had any fines etc, i go no never. few days later i reciever the fine in the mail, $84 for driving with fog lights on !! :action-smiley-069:

^^^ Probably only worth fighting in court if you can get him to commit to saying how far his car was away from yours and then...

Produce evidence from your technician that your fog lights hit the ground 'x' number of metres up the road + the fact that 1 of your headlights had just blown + what you said in your post that you had to turn on those foglights to see (for safety).

And then you may get off; you may not. Hard call.

Morally you're in the right.

Legally you're not.

you see more and more people with the bloody fog lights on at dusk with their head lights turned off, i dont know how many of you guys with fog lights have had them by themselves turned on at night but they only illuminate about 2-3 meters of the ground directly infront of your car, this is what they are meant to do because when driving in heavy fog you do about 20km/h and cant see much more than 2-3 meters because if your lights go more than that you get a huge glare from the fog and cant see shit.

they dont look cool they just annoy the fk out of other drivers and are not really nececary in metropolitan area's in aus, and most of rural area's too, I wish they would fine more excel drivers but it propbably goes along the lines of, oh you've go a skyline so ill give youa fine for having them on, and oh your driving a common car (falcodores, excels) ill give you the benifit of the doubt so here's a waring and then they forget about it the next day and the lights are on again,

preparing for the flame, if it was me I would just give everyone I saw that had bloody "fog lamps" front or rear on in clear weather a fine regardless of how good they've been what car etc

You know, i always thought that fog lights werent actually so see in fog, it was actually for others to be able to see YOU in fog, without blinding the living crap out of them.

And also, thats usually why real front fog lamps are yellow. Less glare.

you are pretty much right. the standard colour of bulbs is probably the worst for seeing in the fog with. very yellow lights like the s13's are better to be seen in the fog with and if you want to see through the fog you are best off with very blue bulbs (you know the ones that are so blue they make hid's look yellow). the very blue lights will go through the fog much better, but they are shit to drive with at night normally. a mate had some in his 33 as the highbeam lights and you could see better with lowbeam on that you could with the highbeam on because it was so blue it didn't light things up very well.

Terry's got it pretty right there but for $84 wtf let it go.

It would seem a lot of the states are now starting to clamp down on the use of "fog" lights as there are now so many cars coming out with them as standard fitmant and so many people who have no idea what they are for and how they are supposed to be used. Creating nuisance with incorrectly adjusted or improperly used lights on a vehicle is an offence in most/all states, just rarely enforced.

Front facing fog ligts have become a fashion accessory and the w..ker brigade have them switched on as soon as the sun looks like going down adding to the glare (danger/distraction) for oncoming traffic. Ditto for the rear fog high visibility light - most have no idea it is even on but it is dangerous and distracting for following traffic in normal conditions (in heavy fog its a great safety aid).

A true forward facing fog light is set low to shoot a flat beam of light into the clean area just above the ground when there is fog/mist so you can see the road ahead (much further than 2 to 3m as someone suggested) when there is no fog they are useless as a driving light and just add glare for oncoming traffic. Most should be wired to only come on with parking lights and/or headlights (argument is parking lights is the best option).

I have used fog lights extensively they are great for what they are designed for - they are not a driving/spot light for clear conditions and if you need them there are a lot of great driving light arrangements out there (my Ralleye 4000 HIDs for example) but they need to be used correctly to avoid blinding oncoming traffic, melting tarmac and BBQing kangaroos.

Sorry someone on the forum got pinged for incorrect use of the lights but a big yaaaay to the fact there is something being done about the dangerous (and inconsiderate) habit.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
