bigmikespec, just want some advice from an expert.. wat are the pros n con of having and not having the surge cover for "my" application on this turbo?

i want to run about 25-30 psi on the street on e85 and keep winding it up for race til it tapers off the power/boost curve...

If you are running a 3L definitely go it to avoid surge issues. 2.5L I'm not sure, you might get away with it, anyone got any first hand advice?

Every 6766 should have the anti surge cover!! The turbine wheel is too damn efficient. Put a back pressure guage on it and you will see.

THIS IS A POST FROM THE SUPRA FORUM BY SOUND PERFORMANCE WHO HAS TESTED A FEW ON SUPRA'S..

Not necessarily; if there is low exhaust manifold back pressure in relation to boost pressure then the turbine wheel is able to utilise more exhaust gases to spin rather than the gases just build up and create back pressure.

True but if the wheel is just smaller then it is going to spin up faster anyway, so you could half the size, make back pressure ridiculous and it would spin up about 10x faster. That's why I don't really get why it is a factor in how much it is going to surge, surge is usually just too much compressor flow for the motor at x rpm.

What do you mean back pressure gauge, as in exhaust side pressure?

I agree rolls it's a bit of unusual statement to make in that context.. Maybe they have done back to back testing of the exhaust wheels and found for a given boost pressure the back pressure is much lower and spools much faster.. Who knows..

Hey gentz,

Ive been meaning to pump my mods into my motor for a while now,

BUT I keep going around in circles :(

Ive got an R34 GTR with a standard motor (stock bottom end RB26) - GTR is currently equiped with a full exhaust (which I will need to change as current setup is @ 2.5inch dump and 3 inch outlet to catback) AND a ARC custom air filter (panel).

I was either going to put in 2860-9's (twins) or now considering putting in PT 6262 BB.

- With the -9's (ill hit anywhere b/w 330kwatw to 350kw on pump fuel, 380kw+ on E85) - with support mods ofcourse (refer below)

- With the 6262 (ill hit anywhere b/w 380kwatw on pump fuel, and 420+kwatw on E85) - with support mods ofcourse (refer below)

The question IS, is running massive amounts of boost on the 6262 to produce 400kwatw+ viable on a stock motor (Im trying to avoid building the motor which has approx 50K km on it - due to extra $ required for rods, pistons etc..)

Support mods:

- Need to change the exhaust anyway to open up top end (will get 3.5 to 4 inch turbo/dump back regardless of which option)

- Already got: Haltech Platinum Pro, Tomei Adjustable Cam Gears

- Need to get: 1000cc ID Injectors, twin fuel setup + regulator, fuel rail to match injector bore, Tomei 260 camshafts (single turbo option) + Manifold + Gate, e85 equipment (sensors)

Those are the rough mods, above figures have been confirmed by Powertune in Fairfield. Though I would like to get feedback from anyone who has previously ran MASSIVE amounts of boost on these PT's on stock motor and how they are holding up (preferably on RB26's).

Thanks.

If you want to run 400kw on a stock motor reliably you will almost certainly want to run exhaust temp sensors for tuning and trim each cylinder individually, or just run it massively rich and be conservative of timing. Any detonation at that level will kill it pretty quick smart.

How good is your tuner?

Thanks for your feedback Rolls,

The tuner would be PowerTune (who have posted up a few posts/comments in previous pages).

They are most likely going to tune feeding of the sensors currently in my GTR (i.e. no new sensors going in apart from increased boost rating sensor and ethanol sensor for e85).

i would strongly advise you to get your tune checked out after to ensure everything is okay.

had my car done twice there only to find issues with the tune afterwards and ended up costing me more money in the end to fix up his mistakes.

You sound fairly switched on so I wont delve into massive detail regarding supporting mods, just search long and hard and make sure you have every supporting mod possible before chasing your power goals.

Two things I want to touch on and a recommendation:

2860 -9s will NOT make 330-350 on pump and 380+ on E85. They will make 300-330 on pump and anyones guess on E85 (quite possibly the 350 mark).

The precisions will want a lot of boost and you are risking your factory motor in the event of a minor fauxpas. For 400kw you will want to look at a 3788R, it is the replacement for 35Rish spool and more than T04Z power. You must run it in its twin scroll form.

Please read the 'who has 400kw' thread, it is the definitive answer to your questions.

Stay away from the Precision turbo option...

Keep it twin low mounts, with good pipe work and exhaust. 400rwkw cam be had around 24psi with a set of 10cm t517z trust turbo's with good response for the power.

Cheers

Justin

Scott, a Precision will be no lazier than what you suggested with more power capability, so long as you have the correct sized turbine housing

At a lazy 20psi? Please show evidence to support.

The 3788 gets up and boogies long before 30psi

    • Even more fun, leave all the ADAS stuff plugged in, but in different locations, hopefully avoid any codes!   And honestly, all these new cars with their weird electronics. Pull all the electronics out Duncan, and just shove an aftermarket ECU and if needed a trans controller in, along with a PDM. Make it run basic but race car styled!
    • To follow up a question from earlier too since I had the front bar off again (fking!) This is what is between the bumper and the drivers side wheel And this is the navigator side, only one thing but its a biggy! So basically....no putting coolers in the wheel arches without a lot of moving other stuff. Assuming I move to properly race prepping this car I'll take that job on and see how the computers respond to removing a whole bunch of ADAS modules
    • So I prepped the car for another track day on Wednesday (will be interesting to see coolant temps post flushing out and the larger reservoir, with a forecast of 3-14 being 20o cooler than last time I took it out). Couple of things to mention; since I am just driving the car and not taking a support vehicle, I took the rear seats out and just loaded the back up Team Trackday style. Look at all that space! To cover off removing the rear seat....it is weird (note the hybrid is probably different because it wouldn't have folding rear seats) Basically, you remove the lower seat base, very similar to a r series but it is a clip that pulls forward to release the base rather than it being bolted down. Easy Then, you need to remove the side section of the rear seat on each side. There is a 14mm head nut at the bottom of the side piece, the it slides upwards off a hook at the top to release; you also need to unhook the seatbelt from the loop at the top. Then the centre piece is weird. You need to release/fold the seats forward with the tab in the boot on each side From there, there are 2,x12mm headed bolts holding the rear of each seat to the folding bracket, under the trim between the rear seat and the boot (4x christmas tree clips there, they suck). The seat is out but you can see where the bolts attach to the bracket
    • As discussed in the previous post, the bushes in the 110 needed replacing. I took this opportunity to replace the castor bushes, the front lower control arm, lower the car and get the alignment dialled in with new tyres. I took it down to Alignment Motorsports on the GC to get this work done and also get more out of the Shockworks as I felt like I wasn't getting the full use out of them.  To cut a very long story short, it ended up being the case the passenger side castor arm wouldn't accept the brand new bush as the sleeve had worn badly enough to the point you could push the new bush in by hand and completely through. Trying a pair of TRD bushes didn't fix the issue either (I had originally gone with Hardrace bushes). We needed to urgently source another castor arm, and thankfully this was sourced and the guys at the shop worked on my car until 7pm on a Saturday to get everything done. The car rides a lot nicer now with the suspension dialled in properly. Lowered the car a little as well to suit the lower profile front tyres, and just bring the car down generally. Eternally thankful for the guys down at the shop to get the car sorted, we both pulled big favours from our contacts to get it done on the Saturday.  Also plugged in the new Stedi foglights into the S15, and even from a quick test in the garage I'm keen to see how they look out on the road. I had some concerns about the length of the LED body and whether it'd fit in the foglight housing but it's fine.  I've got a small window coming up next month where I'll likely get a little paint work done on the 110 to remove the rear wing, add a boot wing and roof wing, get the side skirt fixed up and colour match the little panel on the tail lights so that I can install some badges that I've kept in storage. I'm also tempted to put in a new pair of headlights on the 110.  Until then, here's some more pictures from Easter this year.
    • I would put a fuel pressure gauge between the filter and the fuel rail, see if it's maintaining good fuel pressure at idle going up to the point when it stalls. Do you see any strange behavior in commanded fuel leading up to the point when it stalls? You might have to start going through the service manual and doing a long list of sensor tests if it's not the fuel system for whatever reason.
