OK. So having bought my fair share of skylines, silvias and other bits and pieces I have now met my match with this one. My Mother's car got written off in hail storm and I put my hand up to help her look at cars. God I didn't realise how drab new cars get after you look at 20 of the things ;). Mum doesn't like access in low cars or cars with buckets - rules out most cars I like. Wants something with enough space to do the shopping, preferably with enough seating in the back to get 6'4" son in the back. HAS TO BE A NICE BLUE.

25G to spend

We've looked at most of the new cars on offer and really only the jazz seems to be interesting (although we haven't been to ford yet and we haven't test driven any of the mazdas).

Going down the 2nd hand path the Mark V golf was an excellent drive and definately a good candidate. I was thinking a WRX could be interesting, perhaps an is200 or even Mx5?

I'm starting to understand why people just go and buy these things rather than give them a lot of thought. It's just depressing how many options there are and how little difference there seems to be between a lot of them. I like shopping for performance cars it's easier to get passionate and excited about buying these :). Anybody else going through this lately?

the jazz is a good choice g/f has one the vtis 2009 its zippy and has had no issues in 25,000klms, also very pratical has alot of room for such a small car especially comparing it to the mazda 2 etc........ how about the subaru impreza rs.... the is200 would be good choice...

the new corollas are also nice. my sister has a 2006 one and even though it's an auto it still has plenty of go (for what it is). manual would ge better.

jazz aren't bad cars either.

one thing you will have to take into consideration with anything like the golf, etc is that (as far as i'm aware) they have the indicators and wiper stalks the opposite way round, so the indicators are on the left and wipers are on the right of the steering column, so takes a bit of getting used to.

new lancers are also good, as are the offerings from subaru.

stag,

not low, can get nice leather interior, plenty of space, 4wd traction, range of colours (inc saph blue) more mod cons than yr average rolla, infact keeps up with is's in luxospec if you buy the right one.

Plus plenty of aus importers stock these locally, so you dont have to wait for import.

Thanks for the push, Paul...

But a 6'4" son in the back seat of a Forester (even an XT = WRX) is uncomfortable after 8 mins. lol

yeh I know tell me about it. and to think I was trying to convince myself before selling it to put a set of third row dickie seats in the boot so as not to sell the car for space reasons...

Right up until then, I was going to recommend this - very safe, plenty of power, parking's a breeze, traffic's never a problem, not too low, no bucket seats, space on the racks for a couple weeks worth of groceries, and 'comfortable' seating for 4. Downsides: a/c isn't excellent, it's not so great on fuel, and filling up the tank's likely to cost a fair bit (if she uses diesel).

But it doesn't come in blue, so... the Jazz is a nice little car, pretty good on fuel and my mother's been driving hers for a few years and I think about 150k kms so far.

You're probably not going to be inspired by anything new in that price range...

Cheers,

SW

X-Trail/Rav4/CR-V - not too bad for rear seat space - cargo area reasonable.

Forester is more car like and has a better look/stance - but as you said it could be cramped in the back seat.

Another option could be the Honda Accord/Toyota Camry - both are great on space.

Not sure if your mum wants an import, but the m35 series stageas look like a good value option too.

    • So, this shouldn't be such a mission, but there were a few tricks so I thought I'd post up a DIY for it. This was on a Q50 Red Sport but I doubt any other V37 model is very different (maybe just less steps for the intake heat exchanger hoses) I pulled the radiator out to flush it because the car was running hot at the track, but obviously the same steps apply for changing a radiator for any reason including an upgrade. If you are removing the radiator, you of course need to drain and refill, so have 5+ litres of blue coolant ready. You don't need to drain the intake heat exchanger to remove the radiator but depending on your plans you may need a couple of litres for that as well. You will also need something to deal with the auto transmission lines, I used 2x 8mm rubber caps on the radiator side, and a short length of 8mm pipe on the car side.....unless you can block these lines quickly you will loose AT fluid and it may be enough to hurt the transmission if you don't refill it. Other than that....lets go... "First, jack up your car". Yes really, and put it safely on stands. If you are not confident doing that you need to give this job to a mechanic
    • If the forester is anything like our old 2007 GTB Liberty, I could near on run ling Long's and "rate them", as no matter what, it just hung to the road, even when abusing it in a hard launch in the wet, or throwing it at corners.
    • LOL, all of the CAI like Craig I just need to put a hole saw through my bumper Done and dusted, the car runs, which is nice, I'll take it for a spin when the weather clears up Just need to put the bumper back on for good
    • Brooooo Please send ABS control unit schematic Please! R33 gts25t ABS (Its two plug ecu, black and white) wire colors possible? [email protected]
    • Don't even try to run it on the stock ECU if you're going to have the boost controller bring boost above ~10 psi. I've already told you that. If you use the Nistune ECU, you will need to CAREFULLY read the available documentation for Neo tuning, and read some threads on the Nistune forums, to discover the various things you have to do to prevent the ECU from going bananas when the boost is too high. The is a table associated with th boost sensor that must be modified to prevent it from shitting the bed. This is just one of the things that you will need to do to the tune in Nistune, because the Neo turbo ECU will be expecting to see a number of things (such as the TCS) that are not there, and you have to block the DTCs on those. It is totally not surprising to me that you are having the problems that you are, but the solutions to these problems have been known for >15 years. So just get it done.
