Im thinking of getting new exhaust parts and wanna replace the nuts I will be undoing. What kind of metal should the nuts be made of to best survive the high heat?

informed answers are much appreciated, thanks

get high tensile nuts, you may as well replace the studs too, when ever i change them i use oem studs as although high tensile is stronger, if they snap, its much easier to get mild steel studs out (drilling and extracting).

BTW the oem ones are ok, they just weaken over the years from heat and elements etc.

I'm not too keen on stainless and heat, they expand a lot more than high tensile, this allows the gasket/sealant to walk or loosen. but saying that you can get s/s that doesn't expand as much, but its not as common.

I'd go high tensile bolts and crush nuts or split nuts

on this note, does anyone want to share a good place to source this stuff from.

I just replaced my exhaust and found the last exhaust guy welded the cat on.

So i buy a new cat and go ti fix it only to find that because he welded one join... i'm one set of nuts short (or so to speak).

A trip to bunnings did the job, but i dont know if i want to rely on these long term.

bunnings is good for this stuff.

i bought a set of copper nuts for the turbo dump with the crush styled lock.

been a month or so, no where near coming off - although they are designed for dump pipes so i guess they are designed to take the heat. gottem off ebay.

realistically mixing disimilar metals is not the go.

if your dump and exhaust is stainless then feel free to use SS. If it's mild steel then steel fasteners naturally are choice... One word of warning though if your going to replace studs/bolts and nuts with SS items you must apply some lube/anti galling paste, it's good practice to do this with steel too but steel wont cold weld itself together like SS will. If you dont it's almost guaranteed you will sheer the stud/bolt when you try to remove the nut in the future if you tightened it up correctly.

my 2c. don't overcomplicate things.

    • Thanks for the linkie. Certainly always a great deal of help when people post comparisons like these, but I think for now I'll stay away from any semi slicks. I did go ahead and order the sportcontact 7. My buddy has them on his modified A4 and he keeps saying how good they are. For my intended purposes these will probably work real well. I'll report on them once I had the chance to try them out
    • Talk about noisy. Even when I still had the Tomei under the car I could distinctly hear the tires rolling. And I doubt I ever will need maximum grip like on a track. My GTR will maybe never even see the 600hp mark and I need to get used to the car quite a bit before challenging the limits of its handling. For the next winter storage I think I will get a set of these rubber drive-on thingies that have a tire shaped base. Those supposedly really help prevent flat spots.
    • Well our climate is definitely way less hot overall and the weather can be quite picky at times. I just know that during normal road use or even spirited drives there is no way I'd be able to consistently stay in the operating temperature, and constantly changing the tire pressure would also be a royal pain.
    • Input shaft bearing. They all do it. There is always rollover noise in Nissan boxes - particularly the big box. Don't worry about it unless it gets really growly.
    • For once a good news  It needed to be adjusted by that one nut and it is ok  At least something was easy But thank you very much for help. But a small issue is now(gearbox) that when the car is stationary you can hear "clinking" from gearbox so some of the bearing is 100% not that happy... It goes away once you push clutch so it is 100% gearbox. Just if you know...what that bearing could be? It sounding like "spun bearing" but it is louder.
