wait.... if i just admitted to being a hipster, that means i cant be a hipster... but by saying i'm not a hipster, that means according to the 1st rule of being a hipster, that I am in fact a hipster...

oh shiiiiiiii...

i know. i've been bitten, but fears are still vastly disproportionate to the actual risk itself.

Lol did not know. Will keep that it mind!

Yeah it's very rare to be bitten, but there are cases and I guess depends on each persons reaction to it also

also this...

hahaha

Torque blew out the bearing and it's more cost effective to replace the gearbox then replace the bearing, also chance gear may be bent slightly so cost would be even more. got a quote on 2nd hand box for $1500 new box is $6k well $5k with trade discount

It's a 06 model and has 140xxxk's on it, it's not exactly new and the extra torque doesn't help

lol typical Volkswagen and Euro brand for that matter. They don't usually carry spare parts in the country and default option from authorized dealer/repairer is a new gearbox. There used to be a guy over the western suburbs who repaired Volkswagen boxes, not sure if he's still around, but they are notoriously expensive and difficult to repair.

Good niche market if someone can work it...I see a lot of the DSG boxes shitting themselves in the near future too as Volkswagens/Audis become the new young people's car to modify.

yep .....

i read somewhere commodore is releasing a 10 speed gearbox...

wont be long before all the money is in gearbox rebuilding...bit crazy..even now you find a lot of old hi-end euros,. people paid quarter of a mil for worth nothing because nobody wants to spend 15k on a new gearbox... not only that you cant even tune most of them cause they have too much computer control over everything.. good marketing by the car makers i guess, because people are forced to just buy a new model instead of modifying old ones...

pretty stupid really unless you have money to burn you're better off with an old commodore...

Big reason I stayed away from DSG they are notorious for shitting themselves. It's more uncommon for a manual, but with my torque being heaps more than standard it could have been a factor

although the Darkside Developments car runs fine with 320bhp on normal box, so who knows what really caused it

lol 10 speed, don't see the point...might as well CVT.

The Euro car makers don't over engineer like the Japs, they prefer to focus on safety, trimmings and build quality...as long as the equipment holds up in standard form, all good / das auto.

It's the Japs that wanted to use the same gearbox with different engines and across a range of models hence over-engineered stuff. They also care more about long term reliability for reputation. Interesting, because cars are just as disposable in Japan as they are in Europe. But Toyota made the decision years ago to over engineer all their shit and it's paid off 15-20 years later...they have the best reputation for reliability in the world.

new ones are 10 speed? wtf yeah no point. Never going to deny that the Jap's over engineered things

But for what I use my car for golf is fine, and manual is stronger than the dsg especially when cars tuned

lol pwnt

haha in my situation that may be called for but how many f**ked dsgs I hear about mine is a minuscule case compared to them

    • This looks great! Awesome to have the 5 speed with an LSD in this. The Recaro's look like SR2's or SR3's. It's a shame they've been retrimmed as they would have looked sweet in their original colours. I think I'd want my agent to be a little more up front and informative too. I've never imported but I reckon it would make me a little nervous, so the more info the better.
    • Thanks for doing that Duncan! Makes you a good person in my books. We don't get kangaroos or wombats here. But we have bats and it's similar. AFAIK it's often the mums with a baby attached that get hit because they drop lower when starting from a tree. If you hit an animal, check on it. https://www.ifaw.org/au/resources/wildlife-rescue-app An app to get the closest wildlife rescue contact.
    • My dream is also to have a proper hoist, but I don't think it will ever happen. My quickjack is probably as close as I'll ever get, it really is very good though.
    • Yeah we keep on in the dailies, it is pretty poor how many animals get hit and the driver leaves without checking....have saved a couple of little ones over the years. Bit of a gruesome job though, pouches generally need to be cut open because they are so tight and often the joey doesn't realise mum is gone so they are still locked onto the teat. I checked the modules in front of the DS wheel where an oil cooler should go.... There is the radar unit - that can go for race use) One of the 2 HX water pumps, the silver cylinder. That needs to be kept but might be able to be relocated But the bad news, the big computer mounted vertically in front of the wheel (blocking any potential air exit) is the electric steering computer. That is required until/unless i do a hydraulic steering conversion, and in CAD based modern car design it is not like I can just pop a big unit like that somewhere else (plus the loom would be too short anywhere else too). So, the passenger side is OK to clear out (just use a smaller washer reservoir, potentially elsewhere), but the DS no beuno
    • Well, all the best with the new camry It was interesting to hear about the UK process, it is generally a lot more streamlined here with a shipping agent looking after all the import side (noting the exact final price can still be a surprise.....) and I've used a few different brokers on the japan (or US) side, and never had any trouble with any of them....luck of the draw I guess. You mentioned you didn't get the auction sheet (understandable since you bought it from a dealer, not auction), but I always try and get hold of that because they are pretty thorough. I've imported 2x R grade vehicles over the years and both were fine, repairs in Japan are pretty thorough compared to here in Oz.
