Hi all , I'm weighing up the E85 (Eflex anyway) on the existing RB25DET vs going the RB30 route in my R33 .

I've being reading through Guilt Toys E85 thread and he does make it sound reasonably easy . 740 Nizmos I'm running with a 33 GTR pump and the dryer is a GTRS . Intercooler is a GTt SMIC that needs upgrading but as always I don't want the constabulary breathing down my neck .

Have to run ATM but its obvious the jungle juice 25 is much easier and no doubt lots easier to fly under the EPA radar with .

I think Eflex is available at Heathcote and Tempe servos so not too far away

If minimising trouble with the cops is a priority (and it pretty much has to be for any car that isn't track only) then E-85 is a very very smart choice. You can probably even get away without upgrading the SMIC (to a certain extent) due to the cooling friendliness of the fuel.

E85 improves off boost torque significantaly i found with my car and the Engine just runs WAY nicer and is more powerful everywhere and sometimes you get nice surprises like this when you go to the bowser20120708_111850.jpg

Yep that was my thoughts and reversing it just means using 98 mapping . Thinking about it even changing to an ECU that can do flex fueling properly is cheaper/easier .

Can the Vipec or Link plug in do this or only V88s ?

I know the Link G4 plug can do it as I'm using that ECU on my own car. I would assume the Vipec could do it also!

That whole 'flex fuel' setup rocks.

Here's another option that I'm currently putting together..

I have an Adaptronic which is also flex fuel capable..But buying a sensor and all the extra tuning needed can get expensive and I can't yet afford..

I do however have a pulp and e85 tune already and an ecu that can run dual maps..so I will put a switch in dash that can just switch between the 2 maps..This will only change my fuel/ignition however and can't adjust the different boost pressure which is also controlled by the ecu..so I will set the pulp tune to gate pressure and let the ecu run boost on the e85 tune only..so when I switch to pulp map it will also switch the boost solenoid off..

Admittedly its not as ideal as a full flex setup but I think it's a good compromise that saves me carrying my laptop around and should be good enough to get me out trouble should I drive to an area that doesn't have e85 available.

Adaptronic (if you're willing to give it a go, I will be sometime this year) has provision for a e-flex setup. However it only runs 2x maps and interpolates between the maps based on ethanol level. Also has input for wideband and closed loop operation

Aussie built, and cheap as sht. Not to mention has built in launch control (not like I would use it on the street LOL). I've played around with it before, the GUI isn't as "sexy" per say but it does the job and simple enough to use.

Oh IMO, stick with the RB25, spend less cash load it up with e85 dial in the timing. Save money for other sht.

So if it interpollates as you say, does that mean I only really need the 2 maps and the ecu figures the rest out in between ?...if so maybe I should just get the sensor and wire my wideband in already, I got it mostly for a gauge for now

Haven't yet tried the launch or traction control..also has a boost by gear function I might have a play with to try prevent those 3rd gear tank slappers..

that is correct, it uses 2x maps and depending on the ethanol content it goes "hrrmmmm ignition & injection looks about right HERE.." Ideally there should be a table which allows ethanol percentage vs. ignition trim, but I do not believe there is last time I played with it.

Why haven't you wired in your O2 wideband? ZOMG... close loop for the win man, up that economy!

Haha, Just haven't got around to it..atm my track economy is almost as good as my road economy.

But thanks you have opened my eyes to the way my ecu works..its even easier than expected. Allthough this doesn't solve the problem of adjusting my boost either..which means the flex fuel option is only good for a set boost level or I can only turn the boost up when the sensor says e85.. :D

what is the actual cost of doing an rb30/25? without going into massive detail, just interested in the actual cost comparison for the future assuming you do most of the labour side yourself and get machine shops to do the other obvious parts..

Plenty of people run the stock RB30 bottom end to 7000rpm... I mean really your making the power like 1000rpm sooner so you end up still having a larger power spread, which is basically the whole point of doing rb30 lol

Anyway my vote is for both :) but if your sticking with the GTRS then its probably not worth the extra hassle for the 3L..

    • You'd want to cap off the re-entry back into the dump too. Just something flat that can be held on by the Vband.
