Glad to have met you on the SAU cruise mate. Good work on the updates, your car looked great and I'll make sure to bring mine next time round it has no issues.

RBN1 from bitter experience - drive it as much as you can.

took my dirty stinking datsun to Sandown (drive it about 4 times a year) and in the first session developed a misfire (coils/ ignitor).

thing is these things are simply getting old and maintenance starts to add up...

Shizen. When was this?

Speaking of these cars getting old. Found this last night.

Front right driveshaft. Oh well RPM did mention that they needed looking at last time it was in.

easy fix that brother. go down to your local Repco dealer and ask for an outer CV boot for an R32 Skyline (they will match it to a Toyota Part no.) - they cost $13 bucks (by two to make with worth your while) and comes will all the grease and clips (although I believe the clips don't actually fit so retain the orginal ones or just buy them new) and you should be all good to go.

I had to replace mine last month and thats what I did.

the man loves his genuine tho....

i found it easier to just replace driveshafts man. yea they are more expensive, but you know youve got brand new cvs etc on there.

plus they are much easier to swap than changing a boot.

replace drive-shafts ok................then add GTR tax and your really getting reamed.

the left outer boot is much easier than the right outer boot to undo as you only have six bolts to do undo and yank it out.

peace of le cake

Car is f**ked. I would just replace the entire car. Easier than doing anything on a GTR....... :whistling:

Considering the age of the car i would weigh up replacing the whole shaft. don't want to go back in 6 months.

edit: keep in mind i has no idea on how much that $$$$$

Although I understand what you are saying Anf.

If the drive shaft is in good condition there is no need to replace it. Just ensure it is promptly cleaned and lubed before whacking it back in (kinda like a dirty hooker really)

10 bucks says he swaps the whole shaft lol

its what? 300 bucks? all new, all genuine....

you know me fellas, im all about cheap and nasty. but OP is not.

LOL.

Spoke to RPM this morning about replacing it. It's due for a service anyway :)

I almost forgot to put up why I was under the car in the first place.

Decided to pop the side skirt off to see why one of them has popped out and get them both replaced with the genuine N1 3 Piece items i'd bought a while ago.

Ended up being a good news, bad news moment.

Good news was, no Rust under the skirts.

Bad news was:

IMG_2745_zps0e0ef1fa.jpg

Front left jacking point : No wonder the skirts popped out. The sills collapsed a fair bit from what looks like, careless jacking. Have straightened the seam however, will take it to a panel beater to get it pulled out after next service.

Top view. Skirt can't adhere to the body as the sills bent in, towards the car.

Pesky GTR's.

Hmm forgot I had even ordered these until it arrived this morning.

I think I have a problem. Note to self - no more late night scotchs and sitting in front of the computer.

Carbon fibre coated interior pieces.

Hey rbn1,

Would you mind looking at the part numbers on the front section of the 3 piece side skirts? The small sections that attach to the bottom of the front guards. I need to order some from nissan and haven't had much luck on Google.

Thanks mate and keep the updates coming!

    • So.....wire it up appropriately. You can't use the resister pack with those injectors anyway.
    • that’s the thing i’m on ID1050s and haltech not getting power due to the injector resistor
    • ahh okay cheers, i was thinking of just going for the m073, think m079 would be way too overkill considering they are same size.
    • My first car was a HG. I'm very familiar with them. A mild cam upgrade is a good idea. The 186 is a very flexible engine - meaning it has good torque from down low. You can give up a little torque down low for quite a lot more excitement in the mid range, and a bit more up top - but they are not exactly a rev monster. You need to upgrade valve springs at the minimum. For a bigger cam, you'd want to make sure it wasn't still running the original fibre cam gear. That would be unlikely, given that most of them shat themselves in the 70s and 80s, but still within the realms of possibility. Metal cam gear required. Carbies are a huge issue. The classic upgrade was always a Holley 350, which works, but is usually pretty bad for fuel consumption. The 186S had a 2 barrel Stromberg on it that was very similar to the one on the 253, and is a reasonable thing if you can find one, and find someone to help you get it set up (which is the same issue with setting up a 350 to work nice). The more classic upgrade was twin sidedraught CD type carbs, or triples of same, or triple Webers. The XU-1 triple Webers being the best example. You can still buy all this stuff new, I think, but it's a lot of coin to drop. And then the people able to set them up are getting fewer and further in between. There's still some, but it used to be everyone's** dad and uncle could do it. **Not everyone's! But a lot. All in all, I wouldn't get too carried away with the engine. Anything you do to it without a full rebuild for power and revs will only make it slightly faster. I am all in favour of a complete teardown rebuild, with nice rods and pistons, 10 or 10.5:1 compression, and a clean port job with at least a big enough cam to run 98 with that compression, if not bigger. And if I did that to a dirty old red motor, I'd want to inject it too, which I'd struggle to fight against the devil on my shoulder that would argue for ITBs and trumpets. But the bills would start to mount up, and it will still never make stupid power. OK, a few people still know how to build absolutely mental red motors, courtesy of the work that went into HQ racing and modern knowledge being applied. But even a 300HP red motor is no match for an RB20 with a TD06. So you have to decide what it's worth to you. I'd just put a set of 6>2>1 extractors, a 2.5" exhaust and an electronic ignition conversion/dizzy on it and just run the old girl like the fairly slow old girl that she really is.
