Yea definitely could have been worse, just a pain in the ass. The defect notice requires a full inspection/blueslip to be cleared though, so it depends how much of a c*nt the local guys want to be. I just went and saw one guy during my lunch break (everyone has been recommending him to me as being the more leanient of the local guys) and he said make the exhaust quieter, stock wheels, stock air box (I still have my stock one luckily, but thanks for the offer :D ), and raise the back of the car up a little bit and it should be ok. He didn't really look at the car though so I'm a little skeptical he will change his mind tomorrow which I was luckily able to book the car in to be checked on.

Well, yesterday I raised the car suspension and had it realigned. All was good in the world. Until I decided to test the newly acquired launch control with semi's on haha. Now I'm on the hunt for replacement driveshafts. Better now then at the supersprint or hill climbs I've entered next month lol.

Anyway, for your personal entertainments, here is a video of bangs and flames.

Well I managed to source some second hand drive shafts from a fellow SAU member nice and cheap, and then it turned out I had a friend who would be driving within about 5kms of where the guy lived, so he picked them up for me the following day, which meant I had my replacement driveshafts before the weekend.

The process of changing the driveshaft over was actually easier then I thought it would be. Just unbolt the upper arms from the hub and the 5 bolts on the diff end and with a bit of maneuvering I was able to slide it out.

After bolting everything back up it was time to have a couple of beers and open up the boot on the old shaft. Whilst removing the from the car, it felt pretty obvious that the CV was shattered.

I figure it can be repaired with a bit of superglue right?

Nice build mate. How much did the gear box shipping cost? I had a look at RHDJapan website and the box itself is around 1.6k aussie. Did they charge you much for shipping?

Cheers

Amir

Cheers.

At the time it cost me ~$1800 for the gearbox and ~$400 for shipping.

  • 1 month later...

So yesterday I entered myself into the supersprint at Mount Panorama held by the Bathurst Light Car Club, the first supersprint that had been ok'd by council in the last 3 years.

The day started out beautiful, but made a drastic change into a downpour of rain after only the first couple of runs which meant I really only got 1 sighting run and 1 "fast" lap of 52.47 seconds before the track was wet.

In the end they had to call the day short (still managed a few wet runs). Definitely something I'll be aiming to get to again to improve on times.

Vid of my last run in the wet, which as you can see was slippery as hell!!

EDIT: Second YouTube link not working so posting in next comment :)

    • It's funny, as Ive seen plenty of people use them in cheap builds on YT. And they actually go okay, even though a lot of other maxspeedingrods stuff is terrible. Those turbos seem reliable enough, the only part being, a good quality turbo that is "identical" to it, will out perform it day in and day out. In both a lower boost threshold, and the ability to flow more air at the same boost pressure. As a cheap cheap replacement, not a terrible choice. For cheap and shouldn't blow in a day, not terrible (like other eBay/Temu turbos) for low cost and still decent performance, that's where the question comes in to play from the results I've seen. I'd actually find it hilarious to buy one, and strap it to a paddock basher or some other cheap as POS originally NA car, and send it to the moon!
    • The maxpeedingrods turbo is cheap and bolts on to stock parts. I think you just need a bigger silicone coupler for the intake. Its a cheap china turbo, but it's been running on mine for almost 3 years at 16-19 psi.
    • What do they look like right after you've tried to start it with everything connected? Also post photos of what they actually look like.
    • Also wanted to say, my new spark plugs are blackened looks like it's very rich. I have splitfire coilpacks but stock coilpack loom and ignitor. I tried directly grounding the ignitor ground to body as well.
