Hey guys,

Got a r33 which I've stripped down n put some basic bolt on mods to, greddy copy plenum, garret 35r ext gate, running a nistune chipped ecu (rb20?) FMIC n all the rest of the usual goods to support injectors, pump n z32 afm ect.

Have started the engine (with rb25 ecu and stock fuel system to check it runs and for leaks ect before it goes on the dyno n costs me a shitload in leak repairs ect, all was fine) and now have installed the injectors, afm and pump to the motor, i would like to get a few people's thoughts on A FEW WORKSHOPS/TUNERS that tune nistune, thanks guys

Gav.

Id ditch the nistune for the 33 mate my car never ran quite perfect with it plus using the RB20 ecu stops you using VCT from memory which you will want if ya running a GT35. Mine was a Z32 ECU. Id recommend picking up a power fc on the cheap if you can. If you got a bit of coin to splash out get a link G4 my car ran awesome with the link. Tuner I would recommend is unigroup engineering at Girraween :)

Cheers guys,

Interesting, I'm pretty clueless in regards to the ecu Side of things so thought I'd come on here n ask,

Don't you lose VCT anyway once cams/vernier gears are installed tho?

(Which I had forgot to list, my f**k up lol) I've heard good reviews about yavuz at UNI group.

If I was to run a stock engine with the rb20 ecu how would one wire the switch?

Thanks

Should have kept the VCT...

Nistune is fine if if you want something a bit cheaper. But you have a to source an RB20 ECU and then put a Nistune board in it. Not hard. As you don't have VCT anymore you don't need a VCT switch or a Z32 ECU.

Power FC's are good for people who just want a tuneable ECU that is plug and play.

Link ECU = Stupidly awesome ECU with so many features (depending on which type you go with). But the cost tag is up there for a lot of people. They do plug and play models as well as a full wire in. Full wire in is always a better install as you get rid of the shitty 20 year old wiring loom.

I'm not from NSW, but JEM is quite good?

@ kitto

Yeah I got my hands on a old mates rb20 ecu with the board for next to nothing hey, I suppose if I had my time again is go a pfc or link, I might go see how it goes when I speak to the tuner n get there opinion also before I make the call hey, I appreciate the help guys, might find myself on here a bit more, lots of good info n good people on here..

The g4 is a sweet bit of kit tho, friends got one on his 32, goes like a rocket!

@ micko

As it's a toy not my daily + it's just a bit of fun I'd like to keep it lower the better but obviously you get what you pay for,

Not poncams, there kelford? If that's how u spell it..

Yep both intake n exhaust are vernier gears.

Fair call mate I understand :) oh yeah kelford cams. Another option is adaptronic ecu great value for money and an Aussie product I believe. Having a good ecu is the icing on the cake man just seems crazy as sounds like you've spent decent coin on the rest of your setup then not going for a decent computer :) sometimes not skimping out in the 1st place can be cheaper than doing it twice when ya car doesn't run how you'd expect after you outlay good dollars. I dont know what a nistune upgrade is worth these days but for a few hunge more up front the outcome will be much better.

Yeah it makes sense for sure, better have a good think about what to do, which ecu to go with, probs pop into one or two of the workshops n have a chat, see what the tuners seem to like working with n get a few tips n whatnot before crunch time on the rollers,

Can't wait to take it out for a spin tho, long time coming...

Toshi does good/cheap basic tunes. From my own experience I could've saved myself alot of time and money buy taking it to a workshop (JEM was who I eventually used). I don't want to delve into it too much but basically what Toshi told me was my issue (air leak/blocked IACV/02 Sensor/AFM) turned out to be the injector latency weren't set-up correctly. Cost me 2 retunes, and over $300 in diagnosing from Toshi himself. Rather dissappointed in my experience overall. Forked out another $1200 with JEM and have the figures to show. Smiles everytime I start her up now.

Just my 2c...

JEM, Unigroup, CRD, DVS JEZ.... Plenty of good tuners around!

Personally i use JEM but there are a LOT of good results and examples from the other guys floating around SAU :)

turned out to be the injector latency weren't set-up correctly....

But... This is the basic first step of tuning with larger injectors... Get the sucker idling and free revving nicely, then start driving, or am I missing something?

    • Hi, i’m making a rb25det coil loom for Vag short coil. Can anybody tell me which Ecu signal wire belong to coil number 1 and 2,3,4,5,6? The connecting switch in above pic is 8 wire i think white is for +12v and black for earth.

    • Its a 2002 vr-x four VQ25DET, silver. Coil overs, lowered, polished alloys and sport exhaust. Bit of a project, was sitting in a shed for a while but runs and drives great.
    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
