HI We are in the last stages of getting our R32 lemon on the road

After 18 months and 2 mechanics and almost 10 grand later !!

The mechanic is struggling to get it tuned

It has a bigger turbo and a standard ECU

is this the problem ?

do I need to get an upgraded ECU?

This car has almost sent me broke

but its so close now we cant give up

Any advice would be appreciated

Our daughter got majorly ripped off when she bought the car

and we thought we would buy it from her to get her out of trouble

Hi

It has stock injectors

And I dont know what turbo but its twice the size as a stock one

Its the one that came with it

The mechanic isnt trying to tune the ECU

sorry I ment just running smooth

It went better with a new fuel pump

but he said its not getting enough octane ?

Does that mean I need a new ECU

or upgrade?

What does a daughter board do ?

This is a second hand ECU I have for It

the Auto electrician said the old one was burnt out

Check out the link provided to you by Geoff. A Nistune chip inside your current ecu will make that ecu tunable. Or if you want to spend another $2K you can get a Link or Haltech or other aftermarket ecu but the Nistune will work fine for much less dollars. Once you have a tunable ecu you can stick it on a dyno and it will show if you need bigger injectors, afm and better boost control...but the tuner should be able to tune within the capabilities of what you have now.

And where do you live? Find some local RB enthusiasts to come and have a look at your car and make (hopefully) helpfull suggestions!

You have a decision to make.

Both involve going to a different workshop that know what they are doing..

1 Return car to stock and drive it.

2 Spend a fair bit more money on a tuneable ecu[nistune], fuel pump, potentially injectors afm and clutch etc then dyno tuning and have a quicker car. Maybe. Depending on what turbo that is it might be a pig.

Also your breather and pcv setup is totally wrong. Which will cause you issues. Who did that? If it was the mechanic walk away now.

Sunshine coast

He had it for 8 months

then gave up and sent it back

to our mechanic with an auto electrician he suggested to re wire the loom

Ill get some up to date photos on monday

maybe its different now ?

We are on the Sunny coast QLD

Going to stock is the most sensible, cheap and easiest option.

You already know the turbo is not stock.

Other non stock visible items are the turbo manifold (what the turbo bolts onto). The cheap ones tend to crack. They position the turbo very differently. This causes problems as you can't run the standard air box typically or the standard intake pipework. Cops will pick up on it quickly.

If you keep an eye on the forums, exhaust manifolds can be had for around 50.

The blue 90 degree bend and intercooler pipework also isn't standard. Not really a problem though depending on how good it is.

I took a video but its too big to go on and now she needs

more fuel so Ill do a shorter video of her running rough

What fuel should we be putting in 95 or 98 ?

I was mistaken when I said it had stock injectors

they are bigger too ! cant remember what size though

The BOV is blocked up

I was told it was ok to be blocked

just wont get the noise ?

Is that right or will it be causing other problems ?

Having the bov blocked is better than having it venting to atmosphere, but still not as good as having it plumbed back correctly. It can cause issues of running very rich when changing gears, and will actually be louder with it blocked (and make you sound like a wanker, trust me)

The bolt blocking the blue hose on the front of the engine is poor, you can get little caps to do it properly.

The breather system really needs to be sorted, but to do that properly means a new inlet pipe.

So its either keep the turbo on that manifold and get a new inlet made, and potentially have the manifold cracking, or get a stock manifold and pipework, fixing bov and breather and cracking manifold in one go.

You don't need to buy a clamp like what's on there, a normal hose clamp is perfectly fine.

Can you take a photo of the turbo from the back, and try to get a couple of the manifold.

And bigger injectors on a stock ecu is never going to work properly, unless you spend the money on a nistune.

    • Drain it. I got official Matic D but you can get whatever is listed as Matic D compatible.
    • Thanks guys,  Yeah I should at least have them dynoed, at least then I know what I've got as a starting point.  The springs on these are hard as rocks. I vaguely remember Russman saying he was going to sell the shocks to me with the rocks fitted, as he was keeping the softer springs for his new setup.  I didn't click at the time but of course that was to let me know the shock/spring wouldn't be matched.  I also remember pricing up new springs around 2014-15, but, house, money etc. it never happened. So that was another reason to have them rebuilt. I have rebuilt the forks on many motorcycles so I think I could handle the seals on these easily enough, but getting the valving right would be a rabbit hole I cbf exploring.  Duncan, interesting to hear RP was tuning these back then. I might give them a call.  In the mean time I have been busy fitting sway bars. The Whiteline rear sway bar I purchased 15 years ago finally got fitted, along with the Whiteline front bar that showed up last week. Just waiting on new links for the front sway bar to finish that off.  And my spare set of advan AVS VS5's should be back from the powder coaters in a Pearl White finish sometime this week, with a set of Hankook RS4's lined up for fitting.  And then I just have all the suspension bushes to do. A comprehensive kit is on the way... Lots to do before the Ararat hill climb. Cheers guys 🍻

I’m glad folks in the US have gotten past the FnF and are buying real cool cars like the 260RS I was with a bunch of mates in Portland about a year ago and spotted a green Stagea (just a regular 2.5T AWD) parked about 2 blocks away and they were like “a what?” So I made a bet with them for a round of beers and said “ok one of you run down there and tell me if the steering wheel is on the correct side” 5 mins later the American comes trudging back up the hill and goes “he’s right guys. Ok what beer do you want?”
