Hey everyone

I've noticed there isn't much into on fuel pumps etc when searching the forum so I thought I would add some of my own stuff.

So here is a bit of info that I can give. I am also after a few other opinions.

I'm a Nismo man, I have never had any issues with the Nismo 275lph pump that they make a drop in for most Skylines. Problem is, these don't have official E85 support.

I've been looking at these pumps:

1. Walbro 400lph E85 Pump (Apparently some issues with priming?)

2. Deatschworks 320LPH Version 2 E85 Pump

3. Bosch 044

4. Nismo 275lph Straight drop in

Okay... so there are other catches... like factory wiring. Does anyone have an idea on what sort of amperage the factory wiring can handle? I've been looking at flow charts and comparing amp draw with PSI etc.

Here are some flow charts.

The FLow charts are definitely interesting.

My intentions are:

Replace the factory fuel pump in my BNR34 with a decent pump that will do 400awkw, and from there, when its time to go for more power, I will add an aftermarket industries surge tank, and use the twin Holley Dominator 1400 pumps to feed my injectors. (ID 1300cc Stainless)

Currently installing 2 x HKS 2530s and supporting mods.

Your input would be appreciated.

I run twin Walbro 255's, less current draw than the e85 pump and more flow. Still I had to upgrade the tank lid for the extra current draw and flow requirements. I ran twin feed lines, one to each rail on the VQ.

For 400+kw intank, single pump, the e85 Walbro is probably your best option, but you may have to re-pin the plug at a minimum. I have had issues with the DW pumps on ethanol, and will never use one again.

Hey mate

Can you go into more detail about the issues you had with the DW pumps? Was it an isolated issue or common?

I had a couple fail on e85 builds, and the warranty process is farked. Now I just stick to e85 Walbro's as they are cheap ($185) and they work flawlessly. (Unless you try and run water through them :P)

The e85 Walbro uses turbine tech, not gear pump. They are silent.

I like that Radium review, Thanks Tim.

I can't see a Walbro 255 being noisier than a Bosch pump though, perhaps the 044's get noisier over time? It wouldn't help that most are externally mounted I guess.

The early E85 walbros had an issues if not submerged fully, the later not so much, I have the newer E85 walbro in my 34 as a lift pump and have run it way down past the pump hieght with no issues :)

What sort of issues do they have? I've got one mounted in the standard position in tank (r34 gtr). Should I be trying to mount it further down the mount like in a 34 gtt?

Do you have problems with fuel surge under 1/4 tank ?

If not you must have a " newer " one, if so you will need to lower it or swap it out

Personally, I wouldn't waste my time with a walbro externally. There are better options.

Aftermarket industries makes beautiful surge tanks, and they also sell the Holley Dominator 1400 and 1800 external billet pumps.

Worth every cent.

Okay, assuming I don't want to make 1000hp and have a mild setup and already have a surge tank and am just looking for an external pump. What else is out there besides Bosch (have had great experiences with Walbro so would like to stick with them of possible)

    • A few small updates since the previous post and lessons. I decided to do a little interior light upgrade on the 110. I quite like the iilumo items, even if they're a bit of a premium over other brands. You'll also note the Stedi Fogs, that will go into the S15 fog lights as I needed to match the bulbs since I got the new ones earlier. I hope they fit as the body is quite a bit longer than your normal bulb.  Annoyingly, I managed to trip the fuse, which normally wouldn't be an issue until I located the fuse. I can't say I've ever come across this. I had lucked out that someone nearby had a spare, but oddly enough Toyota dealerships seem to keep this in stock. I ordered some to keep in my stash and as luck would have it, someone else nearby tripped the same fuse so I passed on the favour.  I also did a little service on the 110 ahead of some additional work coming up. It's been annoying that Goleby's stopped carrying this particular HKS filter for the 110, so now I need to keep them on order from Japan. I also took the opportunity to install a bash plate and number plate riser. The plate riser is such a cheap but nice fix to help really tidy up the car. I'm tempted to now also replace my headlights, on this car. Both items were from Project Aero.    I also needed to replace the rear tyres on the 110, and after trying to get it aligned learnt that I need to replace some bushes in the front end, so that's next.  Closing out this update with a nicer picture as always!
    • Yeah mate, never miss it.
    • Any going to watch World Time Attack at SMSP this year?
    • Appreciate the correction on the "ground", that will make a huge difference to looking at this. That makes complete sense about AF70/AF71 which is what I had come down to being the issue, one of these. I'll have another look in the ignition wiring when I get a chance next week. I'll also make up a jumper wire for running that AF73 test.  ECU is fine, relay itself is fine, pump harness is fine and the pump itself is fine. I am going to upgrade the Walbro 255 anyway with a DW300 I have since I need to replace the fuel sender and I'm going to upgrade the FPR with my chasebays kit ready for new plenum/injectors/dbw, but I'll get this working first. That's why this is so frustrating.
