So as I'm doing a bunch of work on the car, I thought I'd make sure it was e85 ready if I want to go that way in the future.

I currently have a teeny low pressure/high flow pump in the standard holder in the tank (nice and low) and a good old bosch 044 under a surge tank that sits under the rear sear outside the car. It's a great setup but AFAIK neither pump will survive if I run e85 through it.

What are people using for e85 safe lift pumps, and are there any external pumps similar in size to an 044 (so I don't have to stuff around with the setup too much)? I bought the big e85 walbro but it doesn't suit external use and is crazy big to use as the lift pump (who wants to warm and circulate that much fuel.....

Car only makes 310kw at high boost on e85 so it doesn't need 400kw+ pumps.

A walbro 460 will fit with another Nissan cradle intank. (I have one in the 33, not sure what/if there is a difference in the 32 with the different fuel tank setup).

Have a look at the Holley dominator 1800 for an external.

A bit more work, it will work and is quiet.

Talk to Unigroup about the specific cradle to use

According to NZEFI the Walbro in your tank (GSS341 and GSS342) is ethanol compatible ( I have run E10 though mine with no ill effects)

Check with Scotty - he will know and also has pumps at a good price.

My 255 twins are still going strong 6 years on in the Stagea, I guess I have proven they are long term safe. :P

I am using a peirberg in tank lift pump (part number 721.088.62) direct fit into cradle, e85/methanol safe, into a surge and a 044.

044 will be fine with e85.

Flow rating of peirberg? (I know I'm lazy [emoji14])

200 LPH at free flow, 130 @ 3.5 psi. About half what a single 044 does at full noise - mine will be 280 lph @ 65-70 psi.

The 32 is different to the 33-34 setup, but that is the system I will be using once I purchase the 1800 dominator pump to replace my loud az fark Weldon pump, as I already have a Walbro 460 intank as a lift pump, was looking at Fuelab but have heard a few horror stories about them lately

Duncan, given it is the engine that primarily heats the fuel having a high flow intank lift pump circulating cool tank fuel through the surge tank can't be a bad thing, if the intank out flows the main pump then the engine return line can be plumbed back to the main tank so the surge tank is always full of the coolest fuel possible

Hi, I have a nismo internal pump and a Bosch 044 external pump from a surge tank. I installed it after having fuel surge issues and it fixed them. I run e85 and am concerned about the longevity of the Bosch 044 pump.

I was wondering if it was possible to use the walbro e85 intank pump as an external pump as a replacement for the Bosch 044?

I run the exact same setup on e85 in my track car for past 5 years and both pumps the nismo and 044 are still alive and have never had a issue with them yet.

    • They are under bucket shims. Tomei provides a test shim kit and then any measurement of shim required. 
    • I always wondered how you were supposed to buy a set of 24 buckets and somehow magically have every single one of them yield exactly the desired clearance. I would have thought you'd need to assemble a cam with either 12 "sample" or "example" buckets of known top thickness (or a single such sample/example 12 times over!!) measure clearances at every valve, and then do the usual math to work out what the actual "shimness" of each bucket needed to be, before buying the required buckets to make up he thicknesses that you didn't have on hand.

Question for anyone that has done the conversion. I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  I don't know where I got this idea, as so far I see no mention of this in any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must be missing something? 
    • I couldn't agree more. I should have started from the get-go with a NEO or solid bucket conversion. I started looking into converting over to solid lifters yesterday.
