Hi all, I am looking for some recommendations for a good oil cooler kit for an R34 GTT with RB25DET Neo.

Probably something similar to the Trust/Greddy kit shown here: http://er34.blogspot.com.au/2007/03/trustgreddy-oil-cooler-kit-installed.html

Here's what I think I need:

  • Full kit with a decent size core
  • Good quality lines and fittings (JIC or similar)
  • With thermostat as the car is both street and track
  • Sandwich plate with spots for oil temp and pressure sensor too
  • Prefer oil filter in original location if possible
  • Prefer not having to bleed cooler separately when changing oil

I was originally thinking of maybe reusing my Davies Craig 678 trans cooler (it's a big 4WD unit) as an oil cooler now that the auto box is gone, however I'm not sure about the clamped fittings...?

I have also been looking into this and want to retain the original filter position. Greddy thermostatic non relocation sandwich plates with sensor bungs are available for 190 + post through garage 7. I was thinking of sourcing a half decent core and mounting it, making some dummy hoses with old garden hose and then get a hydraulics place to make up proper hose and fittings in the correct size. My 2 cents. I'm sure others will chime in with their setups.

I've run a justjap kit for years. No doubt a $1000 kit might perform better, but for $350 the justjap kit works well.

If you do get the justjap kit, Teflon tape all the fittings.

With the relocator does it still take standard oil filter?

Also I wonder how one might hook up the Defi sensors into that setup?

Oh ok cheers, so a sandwich plate, would need lines still.

I've already got a billet sandwich plate for sensors but I don't think I can reuse that for the oil cooler, will check.

Also a bit hesitant with the trans cooler as oil pressure can be up to 6bar or something, so really don't want a fitting to let go as it'll probably kill the engine...

You could probably use the billet sandwich plate if you wanted, but then you would also need an external thermostat, which would then also require more lines and fittings.

The sensor holes in the sandwich plate may not be big enough though??

EDIT: come to think of it, the flow direction may not be right?? i'm thinking it would bypass the filter and/or result in a continuous loop from the filter to the cooler and nothing else??

Not the cheapest and shipping from the US. But comes with adapter fittings for whatever connections you want to run.

If you want to save some money (and maybe even time), make up your own lines and fittings. Free speedflow catalog comes with instructions, all you need is an angle grinder, some spanners and a vice, really.

Speedflow is well worth the extra price compared to something like aeroflow.

If you're fitting a sandwich plate + cooler, might as well relocate the oil filter. Not sure what access is like with the RB, but makes life easier changing filters and mounting sensors.

I mounted my sandwhich plate directly over the factory oil warmer/ cooler, filter basically stays in the same spot, just sits out a couple inches more which is no hassle.

Mounted the cooler where yours is. grabbed some old shitty hose and bent them into the path i wanted just for a mock up. the ordered the fittings and hose etc


Mount your cooler and sandwhich plate first, then its all striaght foward from there.

I ended up buying a kit today. Vulture Motorsport eBay spec kit with relocator but no thermostat. Very similar to just jap kit. On clearance at the moment for 204 for 15 row or 194 for 10 row. I went with 15. Quality looks reasonable. I'll throw it on as is and if oil temps are too low for normal driving I'll try covering the cooler or just get the greddy tstat. Hopefully will fit it soon. I'll keep you posted.

I did my manual conversion hunting bits all over the shop, bit of a pain, so a complete kit would be preferred :)

I'll have a proper look around and see what I can find, will post back.

Been looking at options for my R32 GT-R. A lot of people seem to go for the HKS kit but that hasn't been mentioned so far in this discussion. Is that due to the application or the cost or both?

Ok so I ended up buying a Driftworks oil cooler kit off another SAU member, it turned up for sale just at the right time:

  • Mocal 19 Row Oil Cooler
  • Mocal 92 Degree Thermostatic Sandwich plate
  • Braided oil cooler hoses
  • Thermostatic Sandwich Plate Fittings

The only downside is that the sandwich plate doesn't have spots for the sensors, so the plan is to run this over my existing sandwich plate.

Hopefully there's enough clearance as the Mocal core is a lot thicker:

  • Davies Craig 678 core: 281 x 213 x 20 mm
  • Mocal core: 330 x 147 x 51 mm

Cheers mate. I'm pretty sure it'll fit, there's quite a bit of space behind the current trans cooler, will need some custom brackets though. I'll post up some pics when it's done.

Ok this might be a silly question but which way around should the hoses go?

I.e. when the sandwich plate is mounted on the right hand side of the engine and the connections are facing the front of the car, should the top one run to the top of cooler core?

There's mixed information out there on whether the oil should flow top-to-bottom or bottom-to-top in the core. One argument for the former is easier flow with gravity, and for the latter avoiding air bubbles from forming at the top of the core. I think this diagram is from the Trust/Greddy kit:

This is the way I'm planning on hooking it up, flow from bottom to top.

Ok I just got the car back last night, the workship did a neat job with the sandwich plate and hoses.

It looks like I have an issue though, I just did a long drive on the freeway and can't get the oil temp up, it's sitting between 55 and 60. Water is sitting at 80.

I can think of a couple of causes:

1. Maybe the thermo pellet in the sandwich plate is not working and the cooler circuit is stuck open? Trying the core by hand it's hot but not unbearable.

2. I previously had the temp sensor in a separate sandwich plate with oil flowing through it. For this install they removed the factory pressure sensor and teed off that point - is it possible that the temp reading is inaccurate when it's measured at a 'dead end'?

Any ideas welcome, thanks guys!

Also driving a couple of k's from cold start you can feel the oil cooler feed hose getting warm whilst return stays cool. Does this mean the thermostat is not working?

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA

There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way.
