Anyone Used T&R Coilovers?

Hey bros and broettes.

Has anyone used T&R coilovers before? Seem to be a local distributor re-branding another imported coilover but I'm unsure? They seem reasonably priced at $1200 delivered.

If anyone has used them or has any feedback please do drop here, cheers.

I've never heard of them so can't say if good or bad but for the price, they're not too much cheaper than an entry level MCA blue,  a few hundred bucks. I'd rather get those, as its a recognised company who definitely knows what they're doing when it comes to suspension. A lot of high end cars run mca, their own car (s13 silvia) is last years time attack winner. As they say, the proof is in the pudding. Im pretty sure the dose man can hook you up with pricing too. Also worth remembering the phrase, poor man pays twice.

Oh mate, if my entire build thread is anything to go by, I've learnt this lesson haha. I was questioning whether to even start this thread, but given I can't see anything but positive reviews even after speaking to an owner of these coils on Facebook, I had to ask :9_innocent:

Just trying to keep you on the right track, lol. They may be ok but do you really want to be a guinea pig. Interested to see if anyone has used these or if they've just hit the market. My advice for MCA still stands.

I think the complete lack of any technical detail would be a give away. 30 way damper adjustment doesn't mean much and in that price bracket there's loads of options that are known quantities. As above, call Josh at MCA they have the runs on the board from all types of motorsport, have been in business for years and provide great customer service. When you flog them out after 5 years I'm sure MCA will rebuild them, old mate from Facepalm will just sell you another set.

If budget is a criterion, I suggest BC BR coil overs. if you can stretch the budget a little MCA X-R would be perfect for road/track use

Thanks for the feedback guys.

Don't get me wrong, this isn't like a preferred route or anything, and I had all intention of avoiding if I didn't receive anything positive here.

Seems like MCA Blue's would be the way to go for a relatively budget option. I've looked into them and they seem to be the goods.

Aren't they ghecko coils re branded?

Remember, most of those companies will refund money when you post positive reviews on websites, I delete quite a few off SAU alone...

 

You really need to talk to people who have bought brand new of each brand to get an accurate review. A few years of use will also sway a review.

If money permits and you're planning to track I would skip the MCA Blue and jump straight into the X range.

Problem with the blue range is that Josh and the team refuse to run stiffer springs on then due to the damper limitations so if you intend to track you'll end up with a suspension setup that is way too soft and pitch, roll all over the place. 

FWIW I am running 10/7 kg springs in my R33 shit box and that to me on Wakefield is boarder line too soft. Yes some will say correct it with anti-roll bars to stop the roll etc. But what you end up with is a car that's extremely snappy as there is lack of lean and naturally the inner turning wheel will try and move the same way the outer wheel is.

Street car = MCA Blue
Track work = what Dosé said

My direct experience: a mate got Blues for his Evo8. I think he's running 10kg front springs (might be 8kg), can't remember the rear rate. Amazingly compliant on shitty roads (running 40 series RS3 tyres). That's when I knew MCA would be my go-to when I have enough cash.

I reckon I'll track it 4-5 times a year tops. With that in mind would Blues do or should I ensure I go straight to the X range?

It's my daily, and I travel along Parramatta Rd regularly, so although I want performance I do need a middle ground. Blues sounds good?

Possibly best to call MCA direct and ask the question directly and see what they say.

That's odd, they actually recommend that I go with 14kg front and 8kg rear for my application with the blues.

I've also had them in my car for a year and love them, the car handles like it's on rails and the grip is awesome. I also have Cusco camber arms and hardrace everywhere else which probably also helps.

Regardless, my experience with MCA has been great even when I had a slight issue with them and had to send them back (I had the first batch of blues for R33s) they were very responsive and helpful.

Likewise haha, the boxes mine came in were a Frankenstein of random boxes. when I got my blues, I was asked what I was going to do with the car and they recommended spring rates based off what I was using it for.

 

They actually recommend 14kg up front and 8kg at the back. I thought it would be slightly too hard, so I decided on 12kg up front and 7kg at the back.

 

After many spirited driving sessions I regretted not going the 14kg and 8kg so I bought the set they recommended for extra ($100 per pair). Loving them since, bit stiff for the road but perfect for the track and mountains.

 

Edit:- I wish I wasn't broke at the time and went for the reds also, given how good the blues are for the price I could only imagine how good the reds are...

    • From there, it is really just test and assemble. Plug the adapter cables from the unit into the back of the screen, then the other side to the car harness. Don't forget all the other plugs too! Run the cables behind the unit and screw it back into place (4 screws) and you should now have 3 cables to run from the top screen to the android unit. I ran them along the DS of the other AV units in the gap between their backets and the console, and used some corrugated tubing on the sharp edges of the bracket so the wires were safe. Plug the centre console and lower screen in temporarily and turn the car to ACC, the AV should fire up as normal. Hold the back button for 3 sec and Android should appear on the top screen. You need to set the input to Aux for audio (more on that later). I put the unit under the AC duct in the centre console, with the wifi antenna on top of the AC duct near the shifter, the bluetooth antenna on the AC duct under the centre console The GPS unit on top of the DS to AC duct; they all seem to work OK there are are out of the way. Neat cable routing is a pain. For the drive recorder I mounted it near the rear view mirror and run the cable in the headlining, across the a pillar and then down the inside of the a pillar seal to the DS lower dash. From there it goes across and to one USB input for the unit. The second USB input is attached to the ECUtec OBD dongle and the 3rd goes to the USB bulkhead connected I added in the centre console. This is how the centre console looks "tidied" up Note I didn't install the provided speaker, didn't use the 2.5mm IPod in line or the piggyback loom for the Ipod or change any DIP switches; they seem to only be required if you need to use the Ipod input rather than the AUX input. That's it, install done, I'll follow up with a separate post on how the unit works, but in summary it retains all factory functions and inputs (so I still use my phone to the car for calls), reverse still works like factory etc.
    • Place the new daughterboard in the case and mount it using the 3 small black rivets provided, and reconnect the 3 factory ribbon cables to the new board Then, use the 3 piggyback cables from the daughterboard into the factory board on top (there are stand offs in the case to keep them apart. and remember to reconnect the antenna and rear cover fan wires. 1 screw to hold the motherboard in place. Before closing the case, make a hole in the sticker covering a hole in the case and run the cable for the android unit into the plug there. The video forgot this step, so did I, so will you probably. Then redo the 4 screws on back, 2 each top and bottom, 3 each side and put the 2 brackets back on.....all ready to go and not that tricky really.      
    • Onto the android unit. You need to remove the top screen because there is a daughterboard to put inside the case. Each side vent pops out from clips; start at the bottom and carefully remove upwards (use a trim remover tool to avoid breaking anything). Then the lower screen and controls come out, 4 screws, a couple of clips (including 3 flimsy ones at the top) and 3 plugs on the rear. Then the upper screen, 4 screws and a bunch of plugs and she is out. From there, remove the mounting brackets (2 screws each), 4 screws on the rear, 2 screws top and bottom and 3 screws holding in the small plates on each side. When you remove the back cover (tight fit), watch out for the power cable for the fan, I removed it so I could put the back aside. The mainboard is held in by 1 screw in the middle, 1 aerial at the top and 3 ribbon cables. If you've ever done any laptop stuff the ribbon cables are OK to work with, just pop up the retainer and they slide out. If you are not familiar just grab a 12 year old from an iphone factory, they will know how it works The case should now look like this:
    • Switching the console was tricky. First there were 6 screws to remove, and also the little adapter loom and its screws had to come out. Also don't forget to remove the 2 screws holding the central locking receiver. Then there are 4 clips on either side....these were very tight in this case and needed careful persuading with a long flat screw driver....some force required but not enough to break them...this was probably the fiddliest part of the whole job. In my case I needed both the wiring loom and the central locking receiver module to swap across to the new one. That was it for the console, so "assembly is the reverse of disassembly"
