SANDOWN Driver Practice Day - The Aftermath

Recommended Posts

Let me be the first to say, the day Rocked!! I had a great time... got heaps of track time and saw some awesome cars on the track :P

There was everything from a twin turbo 350Z, and worked STi WRX, to an old Volvo with a 5.7lt LS1 V8! lol. Cheers to everyone who came down and all the people I met. Snowman was doing the rounds helping out with some good tips on the track. Overall I had a great time, considering the tyres I was running :)

It was good to see some of the SAU boys making an appearance. Thanks to Shivram for the video footage! I'm Looking forward to seeing the big boys come out for the Maserati Club sprint next weekend!

:D

Yeah, I had some fun too!!! At first I was scared the engine or turbo not gonna hold up for the whole day, but it goes through.... And I'm happy I did my sus upgraded to full whiteline kit early last year, car felt good on the track :-)

On my way home till I parked in my driveway, my brake pedal feels spongier than before, I drove home gently... wonder what it was...? Or it's just my feeling. But I'd definitely considering slotted rotors and perhaps tryout different pads too.

welp an interesting day.

i am red as a tomato at the moment. someone should have reminded me to wear sunscreen.

i have now been humbled by my car. come to the conclusion that running up the straight is damn boring, and taking corners is so damn hard =)

was a little disappointed that i didnt hit the limiter, but didnt have the (2) balls to push it all the way. my tyres are looking a little worse for wear.

anyway, time to call it a night, has been a long day, and im sure i have learnt some things about my car and its (my) limits.

Ok - well done to all that attended the day. Really good stuff. Was super impressed to even see a couple of guys in 100% stock skylines - including a stock auto skyline. I think everyone got a lot out of the day and a better appreciation for the limmitations on their cars and their own driving and how much both can be improved.

But I also have to say that by the end of the day everyone was driving a lot better than at the start - and thats what these days are for. Again well done.

heartbrkr - I have to say that the auto had me slightly stumped. It might be good in traffic but I dont think its benifical on the track. LOL. Either that or you need someone a lot better at instructing than me to give you some advise! LOL.

GTTR34 - I would say that in all my short "passenger" sessions you improved the most between the first lap I was in the car and the last.

rs73 - you are the ripple strip king. If there was a competition for the person that drove over the most ripple strips you would have won by miles. LOL

kingkw13 - kev your car is awesome. The power delivery and the balance of that car is first rate. By the end of the day you seemed to be flying.

Nick and Mark - good to see a GTR out there - and one spinning infront of us. haha.

Big thanks to Tom G for letting me take his car for a spin at the end of the day. Hope your heart beat has returned to normal. Was good to see what a stock R32 GTS-T was like to drive around there as opposed to a slightly worked GTR.

Again great day - great turn out of supprot from the non participating SAU guys too. Thanks must go to Greg (blind elk), Kayrn and the rest of the NDSOC crew for a terriffic event. Everyone got a lot of laps in to the point where I think by the end of the day everyone had had enough. This is held every year and I hope next year we'll see some more guys out there giving it a shot.

:D

Who's R34 (GTT ??) spun on the last corner and ended up facing the wrong way at pit entry ?? It was late in the day.

I came around that corner to be 'confronted' by that car....I think we had a good look at each other, LOL (nothing dangerous, but an interesting situation).

Thanks Andrew - what can I say, I learn very quickly... it's all about precision, all I needed was a few simple pointers and the rest just came naturally.

SteveL - the R34 that spun on the last corner was Adzmax. The damage wasn't all that bad from what I could see.. could have been much worse. Hopefully Adam will be back on the road again soon.

PS. pic links now fixed.

Ahhh sorry...didn't realise there was damage, hope it works out OK and not too expensive :).

Your the guy with the errant oil cooler hoses :) - I was one of the guys that scrutineered your car :wavey:

If your head gets any bigger my monitor will explode :)

Was a good day, i will post up pics at another time.

a tt 3.5L 6 only made 270 rwkw?

thats a bit diasapointing.....

Well speaking with Dave (the owner), this was his first track day - It actually made 300rwkw on only 7psi with stock internals, but APS detuned the power before he took it on the track... I'd be cautious too, especially taking a $90k car on the track for the first time!

Hey guys,

I had a great day and would recommend this event to anyone who hasn't been on the track before or to anyone who just want to learn the sandown layout. Thanks to all the guys for there advice and help on the day and to NDSOC for holding a excellent event.

A big thanks to Snowman for his help and for showing me how I should be driving. I just wish I'd got Snowman to drive my car at the start of the day instead of the end, I learnt so much about what i was doing wrong in those few laps with an experience driver behind the wheel, but didn't get a chance to go out and have another try.

Has anyone got more pics?

    • I've heard the Tomei USA head gaskets are decent if you want to o-ring the heads but otherwise not recommended.
    • The 296mm rotors are the R33 turbo brakes. The 310mm rotors are the R34 turbo brakes. The calipers are nearly the same, but not. They're the same caliper but the R34 caliper has longer legs so that it sits out far enough to go over the rotor. The pads are the same for both. When you say, "I bough tsome EBC"....did you just mean pads? Or rotors? 310mm rotors fit under 17" wheels. There may be some wheels without enough clearance though. I can't fit my fingers between the barrel of my wheel and the "corners" of my R34 calipers, but there is plenty of room behind the spokes. This is on Enkei RPF1. You can fit 324mm rotors inside a 17" wheel, but I'd be willing to bet that it would be close to impossible with the Nissan/Sumitomo caliper (using an adapter, of course), because the Sumitomo caliper is fatter than the Brembo caliper that is supposed to go on the 324mm rotors.
    • Hi. Can someone tell me what brakes(and mainly WHERE) can i buy brakes on R34 GTT? I bought some EBC which SHOULD go on my car(i have GT but it has GTT brakes) but it does not fit, Brakes are "too" small(296mm) Are 310mm be good or? I have 17 inch wheel so no "big boys" but for me driving i just need one that fits and i can get here in EU/Czech.
    • Since winter isn't that harsh anymore in Poland, i will definetely drive it 365 days a year 😉. But if the snow hits i will try it for sure and let U know. Only swap i am planning to do is of course R34 GTR front 😍.
    • Hey. Very valuable information about pitwork, I will pay attention when buying any consumable parts 🙏 As for the carpets - I got a handful of information from nengun, from which it appears that indeed the carpets for the driver's side are OEM. They are not able to show me any pictures due to the long chain of different sales entities but after I place the order, as soon as the goods arrive at the nengun warehouse from which they will send the shipment to me they can send me photos and if my purchase differs from OEM I can immediately return it / cancel the purchase. I think I will give it a try 😉. Of course i'll let you know what's what as soon as i get them P.s. I know the topic is not relevant to the thread, but both nengun and amayama have these SICK 😍 trunk room lamps available. Do you know anyone who ordered them? I need to have one in my car
