eXc
I back it out of garage, lock garage, then driveaway. So it idles for 1-2mins, then my road is a dirt road, so i sit in 2nd at 2000 up it (2-3 mins) then I take it easy until I reach the nearest town (5 mins) then after that I drive it however I want. NZM.031
my car sits in the shed all week, so i warm it up fully before i drive it, ill start it after getting dressed, then ill come back in, brush my teeth and do whatever, good 5-10min idling in shed, then backing out of the shed, i have to get out and close the door, then i have to get out and open and close the front gate, then my driveway is about 400m of dirt, so its usually idling all the way down there, dont go over 10kms, so theres a good 5 min, then its another 700m to the end of the laneway, i drive down there in 2nd gear bout 2000rpm. then its straight onto an 80km p/hr main road. so i cruise along there for 2km....by that stage, its fully warmed up. the work truck.....pfft....i barely let the glow plugs heat up before i start it and drive off....good thing the lines not a daily driver. cheers Linton Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/78450-do-you-warm-your-car-up/#findComment-1432105 Share on other sites
Zahos
why do people spend so much time letting it idle? Just let it run for 30 secs so the oil pump gets the oil circulating, then take it easy for a while..... Letting it idle for 10 mins does more harm than good. 1 Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/78450-do-you-warm-your-car-up/#findComment-1432614 Share on other sites
geordie
GTR - let it sit and warm up for 3mins or so......then take it pretty moderate till the temp gets up a bit GTS - My N/A run about, turn it on and full trottle ahead Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/78450-do-you-warm-your-car-up/#findComment-1432703 Share on other sites
someonestolecc
I let the car get the oil temp up and water temp close to up to operating temp. Why does idling it does more harm than good? myR32
The longer it takes for the car to warm up, the more damage is occuring internaly. Your better off just driving it sensibly, the car warms up faster and your not wasting your time watching a gauge slowly creeping up to normal operating temp Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/78450-do-you-warm-your-car-up/#findComment-1432948 Share on other sites
lwells
I sometimes let it warm up: depends how long its been sitting and how much of a hurry I am in. If its dead cold (the car) it usually is a pig to drive for the first few minutes anyway (weeee... cold start mode), so it barely gets over 2,500RPM until water and oil temps are up. LW. 7yphon
I dont think anybody Warms there car by letting it sit there for 10mins My GTST is a daily driver into perth and weekends (Love it too much) I have Expencive oil (Motorbike to be exact) good $80 a bottle I start it up wait about 10secs then start to back it out. When im driving to work I dont go over 3,000 most changes are around the 2,000 or 2,500 but when she warms I have fun Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/78450-do-you-warm-your-car-up/#findComment-1433584 Share on other sites
Zahos
I let the car get the oil temp up and water temp close to up to operating temp. Why does idling it does more harm than good? B/C on idle, the mixtures are rich and are washing the oil off your cylinder chambers, causing more engine wear. 7yphon has the right idea, that is the best way to prolong engine life. I usually wait until the oil pressure goes up before driving, so it is after 10 seconds or so. Just drive off, and take it easy. You gearbox and diff need to circulate oil too you know Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/78450-do-you-warm-your-car-up/#findComment-1433848 Share on other sites
oscar32
Mine is turning into a weekender.. I live too close to work now! Of a weekend Id start mine, drive it out of the garage, close the garage door, check the mail, get back in a drive off most times. I spose its about 30 secs all up. As everyone had said I nurse it around for the first 10 kms or so, then into it.
