Well I often see many people in threads asking how much a GTR costs to run, or even how much more a GTR costs to run over a typical GTS-t so after recently purchasing my first R32 GTR (came from an R33 GTS-t) I thought it would be a good idea to list my own costs (right from the beginning) involved in owning such a car for future reference. Feel free to list expenses for your own GTR for comparison.

Car details:

1994 R32 GTR

74,000km

23yo, Sydney

Mildly modified, 330awkw (bolt-ons, no engine work except cams)

Annual Costs:

- Rego = $230

- Insurance = $2,480

- Greenslip = $565

- Pinkslip = $30

= $3,305/yr

Maintenance:

01/2006 - Wheel alignment + Balance = $95

01/2006 - Engine Oil = $55

01/2006 - Gearbox Oil = $100

01/2006 - Bendix front brake pads = $105

01/2006 - Brake fluid flush and bleed = $123

02/2006 - Gearstick Bush = $11

02/2006 - Clutch fluid bleed = $60

03/2006 - Engine Oil = $70

03/2006 - Oil Filter = $11

03/2006 - Fuel Filter = $35

03/2006 - Battery = $105

Modifications

165,000km

lite modified, 251rwkws

(Note: Does not include purchase price, Rego, Greenslip, Insurance, Fuel costs, defects or speeding fines haha)

Maintenance:

03/05 - Wheel alignment + Balance = $95

03/05 - Engine Oil = $55

03/05 - Gearbox Oil = $100

03/05 - Front Brake Pad change = $150

= $400

Repairs:

Engine rebuild = $12000 (spun bearing well km say it needed a rebuild anyway)

Also need to repair/replace rear rack end ?

and the last 3 oil changes were part of the rebuild

Modifications

08/05 - Power fc = $960

08/05 -Tune fc = $500

= $1460

Total = $13860 (~$302/wk)

Take out the engine and its not to bad mine gets about 350-400kms on day to day driving and almost got 500kms on highway driving.

Purchase price: $25,500

Insurance: 3,000/yr

Transfer fee and Stamp Duty: $800ish

CTP insurance: $566

Rego: $250? (havent paid yet)

=$4,050

Maintenance:

- Basic service, fluid change etc $250

- tyre valve x1 and alignment $100

= $350

Repairs:

- New brake pads and rotors all 4 corners and new clutch $3,000ish (dont remember exactly)

- new coilover suspension $2500

=$5,500

Modifications

umm... NO MONEY LEFT! lol

Total = $9,900

WOW ^^^^ that sux,

and it was all needed within the first week of ownership

thats what happens when you buy a car from certain 'highly awarded' sydney dealerships

Hey this is a really good idea for a thread as I've often wondered what sort of costs I would be looking at if I upgraded my GTST to a GTR. I've seen that most people here (so far) spend about $400 on maintenance, would this be say the average cost of a service or was this the fee just to get the car 'up to scratch' after the purchase. Sorry but I don't know much about GTR servicing yet, only that they have to be serviced a lot more regularly than GTST's.

Just the initial oil changes (engine, gearbox, diff, brakes) when purchasing a car. The GTR and GTS-t would be identical except that the GTR has 2 diffs where as the GTS-t only has 1, and also has the attessa fluid.

I can't really see the GTR being serviced more than the GTS-t, new engine oil + filter every 5000km (same as the GTS-t), brake fluid will be the same, gearbox oil the same, diff will be a little more regular however even that would only be once a year like a GTS-t. The brake pads will probably be a tiny bit more often due to the extra weight (~150kg).

I guess over time as I (or we) update the info we'll see what happens...

i havn't got 2 years worth of costs details to put here but in those 2 years i got:

*New wheels + Tyres - $3,500

(needed tyres - wheels for the sake of it)

*New clutch - $1,300 (ish)

(Basic style - little better than standard)

*Servicing - approx. $300 every 3 months

*Coil packs - $600

(never got to use)

*Repairs after attempted theift - $400

Bought Sept 2003 for $33K

72,000km

Basically stock except for 3.5inch cat back exhaust and aftermarket front pipes and twin plate clutch

2003

- just servicing which is roughly $200-300 every 3 months

2004

- new bushes and rear cradles fitted - $900

- new hiflow cat - $380

- Boost controller - $400

2005

- 550cc injectors (also cleaned) - $600

- apexi power FC - $1000

- 80mm AFM's (RB20DET) - $240

- apexi super suction pod filter kit - $620

- replace damaged TPS, neutral switch and fuel pressure regulator and fit and tune all the above parts - $1400

2006

- new tyres $1400

- AVC-R - $500 (still to be fitted)

- New clutch to be fitted soon - $1200

All up it comes to about $8500 over two and half years or there abouts and haven't even touched the turbos or suspension yet and these are only mild modifications.

I bought my 32 GTR is early 2003, and just sold it last week actually.

1994 32 GTR with 49000km's.

Now got about 110000km's.

MODS

HKS GTSS turbo kit $3800

Thats only just scratching the surface.... Haven't included tuning, painting, rego, insurance of $3800 when I got the car as a 21yr old. There's a lot more especially on maintenance. I did keep 99% of the receipts but the new owner has all of these.

When i had the new turbo's put on the total cost was $3000 as the engine came out and a heap of other parts were replaced ie belts, engine mounts, TOMEI gaskets, rear main oil seals etc etc etc..

My only regret of owning and doing all this to my old car is that I should of payed it off rather than doing all these mods just yet...anyways :(

So lets stick to RUNNING costs and not mods. The 2 are miles apart.

eg my last service, oil $50, filter $20 but will last 4 oil changes, labour nothing.

WTF, the same as my 2 GTS25t's and V8 Soarer.

Tyres are due soon, $140 each with 90% rubber for Dunlop 9000SP 275 35 18 from Europe, so $20 more each than the GTS25t track car.

Fuel is costing about $20 a week more but hell, I'm enjoying it right now :( and driving off to a few dive sites.

Black '90 32 GTR 120kms (109 when purchased) Paid $22 500 including use of hoist and tools whenever I want. Car has HKS turbos, MINES ROM, exhaust, cams, HKS oil cooler etc. approx 250ATWKW

-All fluids changed when I got it, - both diffs, gearbox, transfer case, engine oil (genuine Nissan oil & filter costs me $38) coolant, brake fluid and spark plugs. All up about $300 and my precious time

-HKS copy downpipe to replace the stock one. Pretty weird having split dumps off the HKS huffers & 3.5" catback, but leave the standard downpipe and cat.....$300 for the pipe.

-Top control arms. Found 2 aftermarket ones at Option 1 Garage with ball bearings instead of bushes $100 for both

-Full comprehensive covering both of us (my Fiancee is under 25) $1250 per year

-$70-$80 to fill gets 400-500km depending on city/open road and heavy foot/light foot

Thats about it. The enjoyment we get from this car well justifies the $$ spent. Being able to perform all the work on it myself saves alot also.

I think the big thing to remember with GTRs is that actual general running costs are not that much more. I just found that if anything did go wrong or any modifications cost ALOT more as GTRs are that much harder to work on, labour costs go through the roof compared with GTSTs or more of your own time is spent doing these things.

Three little examples I had with my GTR:-

1) blew a turbo exhaust gasket. Removing those turbos cost alot of time just to replace the cheap gaskets, may aswell replace turbs or at least change the dump pipes while going to all that effort. . . . . .

2) Air leak developed on the rear throttle body, again massive labour time to remove the plenum just to replace some cheap gaskets. . . . . .

3) Modified the sump with the TRUST sump extension and baffles to help avoid those nasty oil surge stories we here about when enjoying the GTR at the track, engine out job. . . . . mega hours. . . . .

Whereas on my GTST had a cracked exhaust manifold and some broke studs, a few hours job done. . . .

The sump on the GTST had a nasty dent, again, sump replacement, a few hours and its done. . . .

That for me is the difference between the costs of owning the 2. And for me, since I like doing the track days often the GTR became a little too much in the running and maintenance costs so hence to return to the GTST.

Mine did this, then it broke a LOT more stuff associated with the CV.

Advice from my wallet : Get it fixed before anything else breaks. And try not to floor it when hard cornering.

    • For these last 7 years of ownership, I've always had to use a small scissor jack under one of the front tow hooks to raise the front just enough so my low-profile jack fits under to reach my subframe jack point. I'm beginning to get annoyed of always having to do this. Are there any lower low-profile jacks that fit under the gtr lip on a dropped car?
    • Seat of the pants assessment of the new intake: The car is way less "doughy" when hitting the loud pedal, especially off idle when stopped or in traffic, I did use a cheapo lazer thermal thingo to measure the temp around where the pod filter got its air, it was between 55 - 60°C, in saying this the car was shut off and not moving, so the OEM intake pipe was not supplying any fresh air to where the pod was when the car was at least moving A weird bonus was induction noise on the throttle in the cabin increased a bit,  I was worried that I was actually going to lose some of that induction noise I love so much, outside though, when I got the daughter to do a WOT drive by pass for me, the induction noise has increased alot when on the throttle, not quite ITB doort, but well up there I'm extremely happy with the results and have been exploring the country roads in the region  As for house mods: 1.New front fence is up and is awesome, it really upgraded how the joint looks from the street, and the added security is nice 2. Electricians have replace some interior lights, and with more lighting in the garage, a few new motion detecting lights out the front above the garage, front room, and at the front door, which I have already found heaps helpful coming and going, also now has fancy pants CCTV all round the house The only hold point for power though is the solar and batteries due to supply issues, although this will happen over the next few weeks 3. I have done a heap of landscaping out the front and I'm almost ready to do a new small retaining wall with some nice blocks to replace the brick and cemented in rocks around the raised garden beds cemented in river stone "was the fashion at the time" the house was built. I currently have a pallet of retaining wall blocks and 2 bulka bags of 20mm blue metal to replace the wood chip that is in the raised garden beds around the house 4. I now have 3 big raised garden beds for out the back to grow some vegetables, about 70cm high, 200cm long and 100cm wide 5. My 2 compost bins are already pretty full with brown, green and kitchen waste from the landscaping I'vedone so far, but they will probably take a few months to break down, so anything else that gets chopped, trimmed, and kitchen waste will just start filling the base of the raised garden beds to about 30cm before I start throwing 40cm of good compost, and stuff, for the vegetables to grow in, I'll need a few ton of compost and soil, but the local supplier can sent me bulka bags of the stuff Basically the logs, wood chips and a few strategically placed rocks for drainage, will give the beds some good organic materials down low to break down over time, and they will hold moisture during the warmer months to save the water in my big arse water tank if we don't get alot of rain So, all in all, the car and house mods are going well, and I'm really enjoying being retired, I sleep in too 0700 and slowly plod around inside until I feel like actually doing anything, and only work in the yard for as long as want, which has actually been alot over the last few weeks,  although when you look at it, it seems that not a huge amount of work has been done,  until I look at the before I started the work pics Happy days and good times indeed 
    • hahaha yeah. Plan is to get side skirts and probably just rear pods. But going to do them one-by-one. I've got a set that I really like from RHDJapen, but that one isn't shipped to AU. So need to find someone who can get it for me
    • Here's an idea, answer the questions I asked you as they are trying to work out WHY the LSD will be binding up in a straight line.
