Hmmmmmm i think your all missing the point here. There is no car anywhere ever under the $1500 mark better than a MK1 VW golf. No seriously, i had one with 320,000k's on original engine, i slammed and crunched the gears on it, had it red lining 10+ times a day and took it 4wding heaps (Awesome entry and exit angles, they're fwd, but it doesn't matter, you just need speed and can make it up anything)

the 1.6 litre has 75hp (!!!) or the 1.8 has 110hp, (mine had a sunroof to) and most weigh from 750-800 kilo's. You can take them anywhere and there fun to corner in. Not to mention very reliable and easy to work on (even i could)

had a quick look for the VW on all the car sites, could not find any around...

both cars that i had my eye on were sold yester...

Thinking i might go to the car auctions in bris, see how we go, this is damn proving harder than i thought!

I'd go for the charade, I owned one for about a year before I sold it and bought a daihatsu applause. The applause is good for carting tyres n stuff, but damn I miss my charade.

35litres would get me 500+KM every time, and that wasn't granny driving either.

My sister also has a charade, she's owned it for about 5 years. All it needs is an occasional oil change and your set.

BTW, both cars I talked about were the 1.3litre EFI models, if you don't mind the lack of power the 1litre carby versions are even more fuel efficient.

If you dont mind the sedan model, check this one Has power windows, aircon and power steering. :)

asking for trouble.

if you are going to buy a shitter get one as simple and vanilla as possible so there is less to go wrong.

another vote for the KE series carolla. really light, RWD cheap to run and easy to fix.

there was one drifting at the last practice day and he was having as much fun as the skyline owners in a $500 car.

Ford Laser... cant remember the model number

88-90 models.

Shouldnt cost more than $1500-$2000 and more wont breakdown.

I had one for a while, so have a number of people i know. Great cars that just dont seem to break

1.6lt 5sp man appluase

cant rem weather it was 3 or 4k, but since the misses was ain a "pile up" in it and we straighted it out, its been payed out like 4k back and stil rns and is rgstered. was settled out of court if your wondering how that worked out as the cuase of the smash was uninsured.

in 4 an a bit years besides direct accident repairs only had to replace 2 bearings, 2 cv joints + boots, accident repairs cost us stuff all, a few second hand pannels, a radiator + munts and a boot lid (stock spoiler came with it *choice*) and a case of piss to a mate to cut the back quater out an replace with another second hander is all ship shape.

she still goes as hard as when we got it, all 1.6lt dohc goodness.

definately stick to a small 4 cyl. You dont want to be paying anymore in rego than you have to aswell as fuel savings.

im looking at getting something around the 2k mark. a 89-90 model Laser or corolla is what im looking at... even a charade or starlet??

try and get something with a/c too!

    • It was a great, but typical track day, and some VB was ingested at the night time debrief 🤪
    • And so, to round this out, I couldn't be happier to confirm @MBS206 has decided to buy the car. He drove down from sunny QLD with a trailer last week and it is off to its new home today. I'll let Matt confirm on next steps but I understand broadly that the plan is to leave it pretty much as is, and just get some quality wheel time with a nicely balanced car that is pretty much track ready. There are a few a jobs still to be done first but nothing too major and I think its a very smart buy Dinner last night at the Paragon with a round of VBs (mostly) for Neil
    • Well, 50 pages and the end of a chapter for this car. We took it out for a shakedown at Wakie yesterday, and everything went well. There were a couple of niggles: - Oil cooler fitting leak - tightened, cleaned, stopped leaking - Radiator cap overflow fitting was leaking....Mark called it, the overflow fitting was threaded in and not tight....tightened, tested and held pressure - Small oil leak at the rear of the block, probably the turbo oil feed - too hot to get at it comfortably but probably just needs to be nipped up - leak at the driver's side rear brake line where it meets the hardline. Fitting wasn't loose, so Matt backed it off and back on, no further leaks - there's also a leak somewhere on the top of the fuel tank, maybe that cross over fuel line - that was has been left to fix when its on a hoist Otherwise than those niggles the car went great, turned great and stopped great so it was a very successful day out. I'm always really nervous when a car first hits the track after a long break, especially with a brand new engine as well but it was great. VID-20251011-WA0007.mp4  Big thanks to @The Bogan who dropped by and helped out, @MBS206 and my nephew Lachlan the apprentice.  Neil's wife Mel also surprised the hell out of all of us by dropping by; she's up in Tamworth these days but was travelling to Melbourne so had plausible deniability for turning up at the garage, it was great to see her but also obviously a bit sad all round.
    • Skyline R33 Series 2 sedan tail lights in excellent condition. These are becoming harder to find, especially in this state.    BOTH SETS ARE IN FANTASTIC CONDITION (REFER TO PHOTOS)    ✅ No broken covers or cracks ✅ Lenses are in flawless condition ✅ All rear mounting lugs intact ✅ Comes complete as pictured ✅ Perfect for restoration, replacement, or upgrade   These lights are ready to go, no surprises just quality OEM parts.   These are definitely one of the better sets we have seen in a while. With minimal wear and tear they will come as you see. Bear in mind they are not brand new they are almost 30 years old now. • Unsolicited advice? Keep the engine as close to stock as you can. Nothing wrong with adding some boost and making a little more power, but given where you are, you really don't want to try to make it into a monster. I can't imagine the roads are up to it, and the lack of locla support when it grenades will be a ball ache. FWIW, If there is a dyno around that you can access, then brand new injectors are a good idea, which will lead you to (at least) putting a Nistune in it, which will allow you to put an R35 AFM on it, all of which will make it possible to make it much much nicer to drive and live with.
