I have just read through the whole thread and just wanted to show my appreciation for sharing your photos with us all.

Much appreciated as i know just how much time it does take to upload!

I also love nothing more than seeing threads like this & being motivated by them.

Again much thanks  a Japan trip is coming sooner and sooner for me.

hey BB, i was over there at the same time you were. the photos really brought back great memories. im so glad you posted pics of both the nismo festival and revspeed time attack. the photos i took were pretty poor! do you by chance have any pics of the auto gallery yokohama white 32 gtr? that was an awesome car too! Can you tell me a little more about the rb26 engine you got built in japan? They charge like a wounded bull dont they? what did you have done?

Hey Richard ,

After sitting here from 4am to now (5.45am) , your pictures have convinced me i have to travel to japan , even if i dont get to drive a car while im there !

just seeing the photos of normal life and streets etc have sealed the deal for me !

question , if i were to go to say top seceret with intentions of buying some parts , if i rang them up and said "hey im from australia, ive come over to purchase parts for my car, can i set up a time to come by" would that suffice?

as there are a few garages i would love to go and purchase parts from first hand .

once again thank you for the pictures , its made me feel somewhat happier about my japanese baby ( my r33 ) that is covered in dust in my driveway :P

cheers mate

keep living the dream :)

if you can when in japan have someone (hotel concierge maybe) call top secret for you and explain that you are a foreigner but are interested in buying some parts, not just a tourist. they will happily sell you anything they have in stock anyway if you go there. but ordering stuff may be harder. shibuki-san (store manager) speaks a tiny bit of english and seems to improve a little every year, but it's pretty basic and he seems to speak less to people he doesn't know (shy I guess).

anyway, as always I'd suggest the best idea is try and learn some japanese before you go. even a little. it will all help.

and still more pics to come, but i've been away the last few weeks and as always more pics than I have the time to sort through  soon. :D

when i have a sec i'll look for pics of any of the AGY cars. they are a great tuning shop. one of my favs too.

the engine for my car I had built in japan was:

R34 RB26 N1 Nur crate motor

pulled apart at prime garage and blue printed etc

full prime garage head porting (inlet, exhaust etc, the full deal)

squish zones removed on one side

new valve seats cut (3 angle)

tomei 1.2mm metal head gasket

cooling passage and oil returns opened up

oil feed restrictor added

trust sump extension and baffle added with trust extended pick-up

tomei 260/9.15mm lift cams in and ex

tomei cam gears

nismo timing belt

mines cam cover baffles fitted

that's all I can think of off the top of my head! it was not cheap, but not too bad either. I've had stuff done there before and have a good relationship there so they definitely charge fairly. and back then the aud was buying 104 yen which helped.

After reading your friendly and helpful advice on my one and only post, i noticed the link in your signature and got hooked from there, just finished reading through. Such an epic journey! I intend on going there soon myself...I wonder if the AU$ will go back up..? And what ever happened to that Christmas batch that was promised lol?

Edited by Jez13

:P all I can say is i'm a slack bastard! I ended up moving apartments and taking a little holiday which meant no net time at all. but I'll get back to them. promise :)

as for the AUD no one can predict what will happen. it certainly would seem to be undervalued but we will always get beat up in tough times as our markets are not good value. we are quite safe and were a good proposition with interest rates at near 10% but with rates now way down we are not good value. plus in tough times investors bring their money home or stick it in safe places, and debt in japan is very safe so their dollar gets artificially propped up. that is just one aspect of it though, there are so many factors influencing comparative exchange rates. plus being a small market also means we get heavily affected by movements that would hardly make a ripple in other markets.

^^^ when chatting with David Kosh at length at a luncheon last year, he predicted a fall in the A$ (before it happened).

In his opinion (which is not the be-all and end-all, but lets face it he has been around the traps for a very long time) , at parity we become dangerously in danger of the whole world not wanting to buy resources/grain/exports from us, and that the long therm goal of the RBA and the general money men in Aus, is for A$1=US$0.75.

He said that it will climb above this for relatively short periods, then drop below it for relatively short periods, but at the end of the day the average will be around US$0.75. So there you go.

Hey Richard, great write up and photos. I actually went to Japan last October with the family and after reading this had to have a Mos burger (not at Shinjuku tho) while there just to say I've tasted one. I loved Japan and the people, my son is going back on exchange later this year, I may have to go again after the memories came flooding back. Thanks for inspiring me and others to go.

Tim

good stuff Tim! I should make a list of the top 10 or 20 must do experiences in japan. and I'm glad you sampled the MOS burger "japanese fine burger". They are good.

Japan is a great place to visit and certainly unique.

The old world Geisha district in Kyoto was fantastic as was Himeji castle, what a view from the top (not made for over 6 foot Aussies though, so mind your head!) I will have to go to Hiroshima next time as well, worth a look or not? what about the West coast of Japan, you don't hear much about it.

I haven't spent much time in hiroshima, but if you go there okonomiyaki town is worth a visit for sure. it's a multi-story building just packed with small restaurants selling okonomiyaki and super cold beer. :P also, if you go to hiroshima, miyajima is just a train and ferry ride away. about 40min on the train from memory and the ferry is like 5-10min. miyajima is definitely worth seeing.

I haven't really done anything west much so I can't give any real advice, but I can't really think of anywhere i've gone in japan that i've been disappointed, so I say go for it.

    • Welcome to SAU, what are you looking at buying?
    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
    • The video for the servicing and fuel filter change can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uLJ65pmQt44 One of the main jobs I wanted to do before the car officially went on the road, was to remove the awful looking blue silicone hoses. There's nothing wrong with having coloured silicone hoses, but I realise as I'm getting older I prefer monotone engine bays with a splash of colour on the engine cover(s). I cover this in a lot more detail in the Youtube video, so unfortunately there's limited photos of the process. The intercooler, upper radiator, boost vacuum and upper breather hoses were all changed to black silicone with mikalor clamps. The only blue left is a blanking cap at the back of the inlet manifold and the GReddy pulleys (which will be replaced for stock when the cambelt gets replaced) While the intercooler pipes were off I gave them a quick clean/polish too A before photo I do have a replacement air filter on its way. Fuse box covers were painted blue, they're now satin black Another job on the list while the bumper was off, is to add some mesh https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737966256_99b28bfa30_c.jpg[/img] I was hoping to use some thin wire to secure it, but it seems I've misplaced it and the wire I had was too thick to twist easily. I ended up using cable ties for the time being https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737131882_c2b7989dcc_c.jpg[/img] Was pleasant to see this https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54737131627_8b2aab13b3_c.jpg[/img] The last thing to do was to fix the front grill and re-mesh that to match but I ran out of time The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R4FsF6tgizE&t=23s
