Since the hi-jacking of my N1 block thread (dont get me wrong - if N1 oil pumps are a hot topic, then I am glag I could initiate some dialog..)

I thought I would try a different tact for my next topic...

if one was building a RB26 for response - what woild you do... feel free to explore (but not limit youself to) Turbos, Compression ratio, Cams and Cam Timing. I would like to keep this topic about RB26 if possible - 2.8 etc have there obvious benifits... but lets just say we want to stick with 2.6 for now...

Want to make as much power / torque down low as possible.

So building a good responsive RB26 for a mostley street car...you would.......

(your opinion goes here)

Looking forward to the banter again. Love this forum :)

im running n1 turbos and they are extremely responsive for the street, i couldnt believe how progressive the power delivery is......they dont seem to run out of puff as well, and will hold boost nicely all the way to 7000rpm:)

I notice your other thread made mention of 400rwkw?

If going for response, it's the GT-SS/ -7's as a the combo of choice. But you wont see anything like 400rwkw. 320rwkw is about it.

The hold till 8000rpm when setup correctly.

With injectors, AFM/PFC & nice rebuild and a tidy up of the head and so on… its basically like having the RB26 with factory turbos, but it'll make you the extra 60-80rwkw with 20+ psi making it feel very meaty. Provided your tuner knows how to play with cam gears and so on.

Just whatever dumps and you could increase the comp slightly being fuel in todays world is a bit better here in AUS compared to 10-15years ago.

Hey Ash

I did mention 400kw.... and I would love this + response, but I also understand that without going to 2.8 or 3.0 It is going to be a compromise. Just curious to see peoples experience with response and there own setups....

I have seen some really good compromises with Apexi (AX Series) Turbos seeing around the 370kw mark - however these are sadly discontinued.

on the other hand... how responsive can -5's be "made to be" with the right cam timing and compression?

Steve

Rb26 eh?

Response only, no power goal.

Rip off the turbos, increase the compression ratio to 10.8:1 with some RB25DE pistons, lighten the flywheel, fit the 4.35 diffs out of an R32 GTS4 and fit some tube extractors.

Throttle response with the six throttle body induction should be pretty instantaneous.

Well you did ask...........

I spose I did :D

Now can I have that and 350kw?

-5's aren't too bad.

Snowmans car is one of the signature cars for it, its sooo much nicer than it was a few years ago and thats just R&D really (Racepace)

And considering your Melb - its probably the place i'd be going to bounce some ideas around and go for a buzz in a few of the Vic guys cars with the -7 and -5 and see for yourself which set-up suits best.

Having owned GTR's that are stock (211rwkw), mild ( 280rwkw), pretty fast (370rwkw) and the best (460rwkw), I dont think I would ever opt for anything other than 460rwkw again. I am currently driving a GTR with 225rwkw and hating it, its for sale.

Again, this is just an opinion, and all of those cars were 100% street driven, everyday, never been on a track with a GTR. In my opinion, the difference between lag and response is gear selection.

For the sake of your thread, the 370rwkw was an HKS 2530 set up.

Have heared 2530's and -5's are pretty similar.... or is that GT-RS and -5's?

Been told that -5's are in pretty short supply at the moment too....

I guess the turbos will be the big factor - but if I were building an engine.. "slightly" higher comp.... clean up the ports... and I am on the right track?

I understand a good tune (both ECU and cam timing) goes a long way :w00t:

For me i would..

Head:

Port and polish

260' Cams with good lift

Adjustable cam gears (and dialled in properly)

Bottom End:

9.0:1 Compression Forged Pistons

Forged Rods

Treated crank

Turbos:

HKS 2530 or Garret 2860 -5's

With 1.6-1.9 Bar boost I would expect 400kw atw easily. Im running 2530's with Tomei 260s making 360kw atw on 1.3bar, stock bottom end and no head work. I get full boost around 3,800rpm.

:)

contrary to popular belief, a single can give you the results you're looking for.

Maybe

Fact of the matter is the thread starter is in Vic. Big singles are a no-no down here these days

Low mounts all the way due to the EPA/Police etc

SAU Vics catchcry:

"go see Ben"

(and fair enough too)

:P

... that is a very sexy graph, whats it like to drive?

Here's my latest dyno graph. Racepace -5's set-up.

If this is what you want then go see Ben. If you want / expect even better results on an RB26 then good luck with that.

    • Had a go at the stuck crush tube this afternoon. Tried things like grips and a chain wrench first but wouldn't just twist straight off. So got to work with a drill. Started small and kept a depth stop on to make sure I didn't drill into the bolt. Made a line of drill holes all the way up and enlarged them. Then a combination of chisel and Dremel to split it all the way up. Levered the split to get oil in there and eventually it gave a bit while levering. Worked it back and forth with loads more oil till it was spinning freely, then with grips I could work it downwards and off. And no significant damage to the bolt (not by me anyway - just the 27 years of rust)
    • Well, I'm tired. I'm tired because about 4PM yesterday, before today's appointment someone immediately bought my bumper. They couldn't get it any other day as they're on the way back to NSW. So I had to do that big GTR conversion I had been planning. Unfortunately, the information on SAU about what you need and how this is done is incomplete. So what should be a simple bolt on affair, yeah, it's not. Did you know if you use all GTR items the bonnet won't close? This little manuever sent me into about 1am the night before trying to dodge a way to get it closed. I will have to revisit this in the next few days  - or maybe not, I may let a body shop figure it out. It all needs to come up and my motivation to pull the bumper off is low. It also seems to hit things in the bay where the GTT bonnet didn't. Yes I used 100% new OEM GTR items. Today, I had the joy of driving to the dyno looking like this: Given I had roughed in the fuel and given sensible but pretty conservative timing, I didn't really bet on having the car drive out any real difference than when it drove in. Sadly due to a miscommunication and laptop fun and games (and almost bricking the dongle, prayers and firmware updates indeed), I ended up using HP Tuner credits to licence the car that was already licenced. So in the end my laptop was used. It turns out my butt dyno is still well calibrated after all this time. The 325kw was on 74% Ethanol, the 313kw line was on 98. The other line is the 'before' line which was 281kw. While the numbers are pretty low, they're pretty in line with what you'd expect. Even if US dynos bump the whole result up about 50KW, gaining 10-15% is similar gains.  The curve of the cam is pretty much spot on with what was discussed as well. All this said, it still feels bad to not see the number you secretly want to see. Even if the car drove great beforehand, and I knew pretty confidently the car would drive out much the same way it drove in due to the nature of a wellish dialled in LS1 not gaining much if anything at all from being tuned from where it was. As expected, the car isn't particularly sensitive to running it at anywhere between 12.0 and 13.0 - And the initial timing at 20deg and 12.0 made 308KW. So 3 degrees of timing, and leaning it out to 12.7 for 5kw, anything above stopped giving any benefit until E85 (which has an additional 2 deg as before). Car itself behaved entirely fine. I found out that 100C = 1.15V! IAT at about 7pm was 19C. I might mess with the bonnet mounting.. but given the REO NEEDS TO BE CHOPPED TO FIT A GTR BAR this is possibly something I may leave gathering (more) dust until it returns to paint jail.
    • It sounds farrrrrrr too cold at your place Duncan... Here I was thinking our 10 degrees overnight is getting cold...
    • oh yeah, reminded this morning....bin lids frozen shut too
    • In my case not, because of total reno. But yeah.
