Further to the comment about gulf 1 being a track oil. Can I ask why you say that? I'm not saying thats not correct but I want to know why you say it as the rep suggested I use gulf 1 now that sougi 6000 is gone.

Suigi S6000 is 10w40.

Gulf 1 is 10w60.

10w60 is great.... for tired engines with poor tolerances and/or serious blowby problems. Not something you would want to put in a RB which has 7.5w30 specified by factory (10w40 taking into fact our warmer climate).

The 60 rating is nice and thick for track duty, though if the engine isn't built for it (ie. no sump mods or extensions, head restrictorss), the thickness of the oil will have trouble draining back to the sump and the engine will end up with oil starvation.

  • 2 weeks later...

I just did an oil change after running Penrite Everyday full-synt 10W-40 for the last 2,500kms. Car had 102,500kms when I put that oil in, and now I just gave it some Motul 8100 x-cess 5W-40.

To be honest, I thought Penrite did a good job, but decided to try something different. Penrite oil was completely black after 2500 kms, so now I'll check if Motul looks the same after similar number of kms. Car did not use any oil during this period which is a good start. I'll also check for this really heavy burnt smell I had with Penrite from the start, it just smelled like it was burning, but some people on this forum said that this smell and blackness of oil is normal - lets wait and see how Motul goes.

quick question if i replace the pistons ,rings and bearings in the motor and valve springs etc what oil should i use after run in the reason i ask is i notice that people talk about older rb's etc with bigger tolerences and things and use a different type of oil eg. 5-60 grade i was planning on using a 10-40 Ur help would be appreciated

^ I'd rather my oil have all the black crap than the contacting surfaces inside my motor. What oil did you use before your change?

I'm about to start my maintenance regime on my newly acquired, fairly stock 34Gt-t. Kicking off with it's 100k service. I'm thinking of using Royal Purple 10w40 for my first stint, after a flush with a cheapy. But I have also been considering Motul 4100. Decisions decisions!

My mate ran RP in his 34 and had nothing but good things to say, plus you read the odd thing here and there. Not too many negative things are said about RP, if at all. But if anyone wants to suggest to me otherwise, go ahead!

yeah I agree with the royal purple going black really fast (though it is purple to start with...). I've mainly run it in my RX7 as that's what was reccomended but I didn't rate it that high.

much prefer the motul chrono 300v 10W40 for all my road going nissans (currently 2 GTRs and my silvia).

It's probably been asked and answered already but reading through all 108 pages is crazy! Anyway, I was just wondering what the best oil for an N/A R34 25GT (with the NEO RB25DE engine) is? A lot of people have recommended different oils and I'm just not sure which one to go for.

Thanks a lot.

Different additives are used to achieve the 10w40, other than that they're probably both quite similar, aimed at similar markets.

Were they going to scrap the 8100 xcess? I thought the xmax was released as just another product, not a replacement.

5w40 is thinner when cold than 10w40

also 5w40 has more additives than other motul oils and in the 300v format is the only viscosity that is not able to be mixed and matched

tuned the car on castrol edge 10w60 the other day...

so far the car idles perfectly, warm's up and runs perfectly at operating temp, and has no signs of negatives with the 60 weight or robbing of any power

car made 290rwkw on 20 psi (old motor made just over 280 on turbolight 10w40)

That's very interesting, how does the tune depend on the oil? Like what are the changes in tune for different oils?

Also what did you mean by the 300v mixing, as in it can't be mixed with other oils? Or other 300v's?

Black oil is what you should be dropping and shows that it it cleaning carbon from the engine.

Burning smell is NOT normal and is a sign of an oil that is not up to the task for your engine.

    • I wasn’t able to replicate the sound anymore. It was a one time sound so maybe it was just coincidence but it was like small pebbles being dropped in a coke can.   should I try cleaning the MAF? It could be it’s functioning but dirty? I don’t know.
    • Update 4: Hi all. The car drives again! Haven't driven for long, only to store it in the garage again, but the test drive was successful. The coolant and oil leaks seem to be fixed for now. Temps on the engine were also very good, while moving I never even saw 80C water during the approx. 30 minute drive. Ate up all the coolant in the reservoir though so will have to fill that even more when I go to the car next time. One thing that pisses me off is that the RPM gauge is still f**ked, I even resoldered the board twice and used copper paste on the silly screws that are used as connections. Next time I take it out I'll take apart the board and fit new components, I'll see if I can get a replacement IC for it.  I have an appointment set for 22nd of September for the engine tune to 370hp. Alignment also still needs to be done. My hope is that I can get all the legal stuff over with by the end of this season. Anyone of you have advice regarding intercoolers? Currently there is an APEXI core fitted, one of those weird hybrid ones, 600x270x76. I don't think it's bad but it's not new and now I still have the chance to change it now to legally include it in the paperwork. Only issue is that the only options that would arrive in time are a HKS Type R intercooler or generic Ebay spec intercoolers comparable to a JustJap one. Ideally I'd order a Plazmaman but it takes over a month to receive which would mean making the car legal has to wait until next season. Would love to hear some input on this. Same story for my injectors, the previous owner was a nunce and put ID 1050x on the engine. They work but are obviously not ideal at "normal" power levels. But I don't see a reason to change them unless the tuner says it's necessary. I read online before buying a different exhaust that the top secret style rear diffusers won't fit due to the size of the rear resonators. My buddy and I made it work by slightly "adjusting the shape" of the mounting bracket and making some spacers out of 3d print for the mounting bolts. Fits like a charm. Just putting this here in case someone has this problem. Even the hefty HKS Silent Hi Power rear can fits without hitting anything.
    • Well they got my money but they are not getting my gearbox !
    • It's needed for rolling idle up, and I think it is a decider on VCT also.
    • I mean, not really. Link ECU's can absolutely still have errors from the ECU thinking it's getting a sensor it's not expecting. I would imagine the speed at the ECU level in Nistune does absolutely nothing anyway? I assume the ECU does not do any fancy TC stuff with regards to front+rear wheel speed or anything of that like anyway. Someone who uses Nistune may be more fluent in it.
