Hi Charlie. 10 was with Trust 6 speed but in 4th. Everyone seems to have pretty low trap speeds at ASID. Seems about 130 mph (my fastest trap speed) is it for 4th anyway and my r32 doesn't have the power low enough in the curve to pull 5th properly at the strip. I'll post up my dyno sheet on my drag racing thread. The OS Giken clutch also is feeling/sounding a bit wierd that's why I'm getting yours. $2700 to rebuild an R3C - that's a friggin joke !

Yep, smashed 3rd in a series 3 box with OS Triple plate. Replaced it with an OS 5 speed box and billet centre plate i bought from Charlie(NXTIME) and loved it though sold not long after. I was making around 370kw atw and was spinning hard long into 2nd on the road no dramas.

  • 2 months later...

Running a os gikken twin plate sprung center clutch. Nicer on the gear box compared to the triple I had..

Got a second hand gearbox rebuilt last year with new bearings and synchros, put that in and it worked well (350RWKW).

But now something has flogged out in it the other night. It seems like it's some type of thrust bearing or washer maybe that has flogged out.

Makes a light dull grinding/ little tap noise.

It only makes noise when:

In neutral,

In any gear, even reverse on light throttle to full acceleration.

No noise when:

Decelerating,

Push the clutch pedal in to dis engage the input shaft.

Pissed me off that it cost me $1975 to get rebuilt, but it is handling double factory output though.

I think I'll go a brand new box and service it more often...

The last posts were back in April "09" are there new boxes available now.

Have a standard R34GTR box and I will have around or over the 400awkw after a 3.2 stroker build and have an OS Giken Quad Clutch, if 2 and 3 plates are tough on boxes how will a quad go

Smash it to bits. The clutch you have isn't sprung centre and well and truly overkill for what you want. Pete, I'd suggest to change that bad boy and give the box a fighting chance if living.

Thanks , I think,haha

Go to the Nismo twin coppermix?

What would you suggest?

If you can't get your username right, how do you expect to learn all there is to know about 1000hp GTR's in a few weeks?

It's so damn confusing. Which one is your real username Pete?

Hi Scotty

I have explained this a few times but here we go again , anything for you Scotty  .I have even asked the SAU site for an answer to the problem, but I think it has to do with my security on the laptop and I cannot get it to work. I could not sign in on my laptop under TT350GT so I had to register as "The Real nismo1" and with a different email address , so when I am not able to access my PC I could still log in , read and participate in the Forum , SORRY

Why don't you use your wealth of knowledge for good instead of evil and answer some questions instead of being Mr Picky :action-smiley-069: maybe there should be an R in there somewhere :whistling:

As someone considering going GTR this thread concerns me. 380/450kw on e85 is a lot more common and smahed gearboxes appear to be a very constant issue.

Is it as bad as this thread suggests? With so many failures over so much time, has anyone 'fixed' this pre-emptively?

^^ I have been spooked by the posts and other stories online but there seems to be a common problem, big motors, tough clutches and hard changes but it is hard not to get into the next gear ASAP and easy enough to stuff the shift, even for a lot of you blokes that have been doing it for yonks!

I have put my build on hold until I sort out my clutch/box situation. I have to make up my mind before I have the motor out and going to or past 400awkw with a heap of torque. If I am going to spend a shat load on the build I should get this box/clutch thing sorted as best I can and fixed with the build.

So I will keep my mind open and listen to you blokes.

From what I have read and been told, there are no absolutes with high KWs and how long a particular part will hold up under the stresses these powerful motors and drivers put them under but it seems you can make changes that will help and save $s down the track :)

I think the other answer is, with these high performance cars, shat is going to happen sooner or later, so save some money to fix the next problem or sell it while it is still going OK :(

You push high power, you will be constantly finding the limits of parts, driver sympathy plays a major role in saving boxes.

Be gentle and it may last to some degree, be a brute, expect to be changing boxes often.

We bought a newly refurbished Trust/quaife 6 speed dog box, does not guarantee anything, all it takes is a hard lauch on sticky rubber and it could break a input shaft in a blink of an eye.

If you want something as good as it gets try a PPG gear set or part with the cash and go Hollinger.

Yeh, a bit of TLC must help but hard to do all the time, might have a look into PPG as I think the Hollinger is about $20k

Sometime crap happens when you are not even trying, a bit of gravel spin and then bite hard can = $$s

I'm running 450kw at wheels on e85 through a stock box, previously at 410kw went to the drags, no issues

Another drag night coming up on the 16th July

Should hold up, box doesn't crunch or anything might just be lucky

I think I should just get the main work done drive the car the best I can and if/when it goes pop fix it instead of worrying about , when and if :)

    • sold listed as a Tomei LSD 1.5 Way For 1998+ Nissan Skyline ER34 25GT RB25DE w/Open R200 https://www.ebay.com/itm/174006114594?campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=&mkrid=711-53200-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms=&campid=5338967980&mkevt=1&mkcid=1&toolid=10050&customid=71883f2ccc571356e0a757bc7adfdde2&mkrid=710-53481-19255-0&loc_physical_ms=108689&loc_interest_ms= it went in like butter all gears, alignment, back lash etc, rotation and clearances correct, and if rolling all rotates smooth and free when coasting down road , clutch in or out over 10 mph smooth... its the binding, clunking and jerking from a stop that is most concerning, also seems like its going to tear the tires off in 10 miles of normal road driving.
    • What 1.5 way? There's no such thing really as a 1.5 way, just different ways of explaining 2 ways with different ramp rates. HOWEVER. In any driving in a straight line your 1.5 or 2 or 1.7 way should have no clunking at all. With the clutch fully depressed the diff should be silent (unless it's welded but I'm assuming it's not). Something aint right here.
    • Clutch is a spec brand, new clutch system,( PP, flywheel, friction disc, etc. pull type) installed 100 miles ago, with no problems.
    • looking for some help and maybe some insight on others experience with a new LSD. R34 GT ran and drove beautifully, but always alot of grip loss due to the open R200 rear end, so I just installed a new 1.5 LSD way into the stock open R200 for a ER34. Simple. Everything seemed right. I test drove for the first time this weekend. as I started to back out the garage the first time slowly with tires straight it sounded and felt like I had a loose or half disconnected drive shaft...that was clucking around loose and shaking entire vehicle, and making it feel like the trans clutch was spontaneously slipping then grabbing very roughly while just letting out pedal slowly. I backed it out went to pull forward with the same noise, shake and slip grab feeling with hesitation, I turned the tires to back out more and then pulled ahead some same thing but worst because of added wheel resistance (which that I expected) puzzled … pulling it back in checking everything over and finding nothing wrong, I tried it the next day. same thing, couldn’t believe how it shook everything again making a terrible noise and making it feel like the trans clutch was slipping and grabbing, but I got it out of garage into the driveway, got it straight, drove forward and then reveres a few times in a straight line everything shaking , causing what felt like clutch slip and grab every time, sounded like right behind front driver tire and I could feel it in the floor board with my feet,... worst right when beginning to let clutch pedal out to engage slightly, shuttering and sounding terrible along the way…I managed to slowly get down the road, babying it the whole way, once I was rolling (out of 1st) seemed to be better and between shifts, then clutch felt closer to normal…not slip/ grab etc., but back down to any stop, straight road or turning, same thing. Made no difference if all tires were straight or if I was turning. All other gauge read out correct. with in 2 miles as planned I reached the empty parking lot and performed the break in procedure that came with lsd, essentially to drive in a figure 8 a bunch.  Did this, binding chattering, and shaking the car the whole way. I drove it back home seemed somewhat normal once I was in straight line and past 10 mph or so, and I know it will “bind” on corners and cause some tires squeal when turning especially from a stop, but when I begin to move it still causes what feels like the trans clutch to slip and jerk badly as well as shaking the entire car, and sounds terrible, that I didn’t expect. I used the fluid they supplied with LSD kit and did the breaking, planning to change fluid as they suggest after breaking, but wondering will it get smoother or less aggressive with use? maybe a 1.5 is just too aggressive for normal road driving?   I have a LSD that I put in my 71 cuda when I restored it, with amazing smooth , quite yet effective results. Different style LSD but that ones a joy to drive. maybe expecting too much from this R200?
