yeah I the remote DVRs with HDD will definitely fare better as you are much more flexible with mounting. but the HDD handycams i've used and seen used didn't fare so well. but that was a few years ago now when they first hit the scene. we tried some and friends of mine tried them with not much joy and then gave up and went to solid state or back to DV tape. things may have improved a lot since then. so don't all rush out and chuck your HDD handy cams in the bin on my say so!

I've decided I'm going with the Sandisk V-mate set up

V-mate - now $69 (plus delivery) on Ebay

Sony 480line CCD Camera $130

The rest will be bits and pieces needed from Jaycar, who now also make an external mic for CCD Camera's.

I was worried about not being able to view what was just recorded but have a portable DVD player which plus into cig lighter socket. The V-mate can plug straight in through RCA's. I'll also use this to set it all up as the camera will also use RCA's

My next track day is 13th May so want to have it all done by then.

Wish me luck!

Ben,

These suction mounts seem pretty good. Looks to be exactly like the one i had on teh GoPro and never had a prob with. Only these are designed to hold a bullet cam instead.

I've seen people velcro them to teh roll cage, but prefer the suction mount

Yeah Bobby thats the exact mount I am using for the bullet camera. seems pretty strong and flexable for placement.

For anyone who wants to run a DV cam setup, I have a good quality sony bullet cam + 5m AV cable for sale $150.

I'm getting my POV.1.5 Moto System from here http://www.advdesigns.net/index.html and although I haven't seen the full exchange/conversion rate at this time, it looks like I'm saving a couple of hundred dollars. I'll let you know for sure when I receive the converted statement on my credit card.

I phoned RaceRecall every day for three days and each time was told she would get Mark to call me back. I never heard from them. On the other hand, Chad from Adventure Designs was extremely helpful and super responsive and offered express shipping (5 days).

I'm also getting the lens shield and right angle hook & loop mount. Power to battery comes with the Moto System and a 4gb card.

I'll let you all know how it all goes. Hopefully my car will sound more like my car with this camera.

I just bought myself a POV1 from the 'states as well. Demo model, and it only ended up costing me $710AUD delivered express.

Can't wait to try it out!

Now to sell my camera... :O

I ordered mine on Friday from the USA and it arrived this morning

I received (price in USD)

POV1.5 Moto kit (kit includes power to car battery worth $69.95) $649.95

VIO POV Mount Kit $69.95

Lens Shield (open wheeler) $12.95

Right angle hook & loop mount $7.95

Shipping $45

They gave me two 4GB cards and quite a few large decals and its worth mentioning the service was excellent.

Without all the extra's, they have the camera kit with free 4gb card for $599.95 USD at the moment.

I'll post up some footage as soon as I can.

Yep, definately some good deals out of the US for them right now. Mine should be here Friday, and as with your experience the service I've had has been fantastic.

I'm glad it's arriving so quicly too as I really want to film the first start up of my car

Okay, converted price of above, including all the extras + freebies + freight came to AUD $1178.45 which isn't too bad compared to the local prices advertised and considering how many extras I received in the kit etc.

  • 1 month later...

I just got a Panasonic DMC-LT1 which is a 12mp waterproof/rugged still camera which takes 720P video as well..

Pretty damn impressed with the video quality of it too..Will be using it for my car vids from now on.

I am uploading some sample vids to Youtube HD at the moment, will post some links when done..

Not bad for about $550 ..suited me well.

    • Hello Liam - HA - somewhere in flies - possibly I have an update, but I have been so busy, projects have taken a back seat to getting business back on track.  I will let you know the outcome, but I think I am going to go for the 8HP,  CHEERS.  ELVIS
    • Thanks Joshuaho96, yes - as someone else also suggested, the 8HP seems the 'smart choice' - HA - and ZERO to do with cost, but I am sure 8 speeds will be better than 6 speeds - HA - maybe.  I will purchase a new 8HP,  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Nobody said anything about getting a "...cheap Falcon box..."- it was JUST a question about a specific transmission.  And YOU may have a problem with not enough $ - HA - I do NOT - so please keep your comments like you are some financial guru to yourself.  BUT - much appreciated re the cost of a new 8HP and I twill probably be the way I go.  Thanks.  ELVIS.
    • Most people I know in the BMW world are swapping 6HPs for 8HPs. The 6HP has a big issue with one of the clutch drum bushings wearing out shockingly early which leads to them going into limp mode going into 5th/6th gear as the oil pressure loss from the worn bushing causes clutch slip. Even with the adaptations in shifting the TCU can't bump line pressure enough to keep the clutches from slipping and burning. I've personally looked at a 335d with 6HP28 with one owner and ~90k miles on it and the transmission adaptations were way out of spec and even though it nominally drove ok I'm confident it would have needed a full rebuild sooner than later. Other than that they're fine, but the 8HP doesn't really have weird issues like this to my knowledge and they're in everything these days so pulling them out of crashed cars isn't too hard.
    • There is an ABS pump and a few solenoids. You could trigger the front/rear solenoids with a pressure bleeder attached with a Consult 2.
