Hey guys,

As previously being a 33 gtst owner, I was hoping you's will help me out deciding on a new car.

When I had the 33 I loved it, the feeling of when boost came on was awsome but when i got the vxss I loved the instant down low power and the comfort of it! It was great! But im not sure what I should get I would love to get a 34 gtr but dont have enough coin was thinkin towards the 33 GT-R, Evo 5/6 or vy/vz clubsport. Half the reason I would like to stay with a skyline is because of this forum it's great heaps helpful whenever I had a prblem with the 33 chances are it would be common enough to be on here, when I had the vx I was a member on ls1 which wasnt as good, not alot of info well anyways iv'e got about 30 to spend.

Would be great if you's could help me out cheers

clubby will be nice and comfy, and have a bit of poke, however will be the heaviest on fuel when driven hard. if something breaks parts are easy to get.

33gtr has it all. plenty of go, reasonably comfy (not as comfy as the clubby though). only downside is that if something breaks it costs a lot to fix.

evo, go well, nice and nimble. i'm not a fan of the earlier ones though.

I think if you take comfort in to consideration, it will be hard to go past the HSV in any comparison. just got so much leg room, head room and so much space to do any thing :angry:

Definitely not the EVO as it has Zero comfort..... Love the TME 6.5 :(

when it come to R33, get S3 R33 GTR as it's lot better looking than then normal R33 R. but there getting old and not the cheapest car to maintain as a daily.

my pick Get V35 Manual, you get comfort, Luxury, real world Pace and a very nicely balance Car (It does feel slower than my old S2 R33 GTST, however). i got mine with full leather for around 26K. just my 2c suggestion

I've made this decision in the past and owned all (in effect) except the Evo.

I had an 02 Monaro since 11,000kms on it. Made 250rwkW, had brakes/suspension/wheels/tyres/engine modifications. Essentially the same as the Clubsport regardless of minor differences and body shape and specification. Build quality (plastics and parts like seatbelts etc) is low and I found it frustrating. Driving position, seats, steering not involving. It has a great engine, sounds good and goes well, even handles well for its size. But they are heavy on fuel. But very reliable. I got over it pretty quickly, the quality is lower and they not in the same league as Japanese cars.

GTR. I've had two. Great cars, if they do need maintenance given what they are and their age, it can be costly - but not expensive. I would never class GTRs as particularly expensive this day and age. They are extremely reliable and quite practical (4 seats, reasonable size and a boot). Not too bad on fuel either. Can be made into a daily driven rocket with few modifications. The Clubsport can be the same, but will never be as fast as a GTR on the street, they are simply too heavy and limited by traction (I have mates with 500rwhp versions - up to sane speeds a stock GTR was faster).

Evo. I nearly bought one. Practical, reliable, fast. They are not made as powerful as either of the above as easily. But they are a great bit of kit. With a Evo 6 you will notice that they are somewhat 'tinny' given what they are based on. Quite a raw driving experience however.

I drive a GTR every day now and love it. I wouldn't consider an Australian built car for a regular driver again (we have plenty of muscle cars in the family and I have old yank stuff still), but I would consider an Evo. It does everything I need it to and then some. Reliable as all shit, despite being tuned for 1.45 bar. :) However I accept there is a risk on the seemingly original 150,000km engine and abuse it at all (it may have been built in Japan when mods were done).

I have an R34 GT-R and a Tommi Makinen. The Evo is a rough and raw car to drive on the street. The plastics are super cheap and crap, the turning circle is like a whale, suspension is rough as guts. But it's a car for the purist. It's relatively light and nimble, the power is quite astounding for a 100% stock car, Recaros are awesome, brakes are superb. You can really push it into a corner and would obviously understeer, but can get out quite easily. Put some simple mods on and it's a real weapon for such a small car.

A GT-R is similar to an Evo, but with attributes that clearly differentiate from the Mitsu. The interior build is not perfect but hell of a lot better than an Evo. The car is heavier, but in a good way that it feels much more solid and stable at high speeds. Brembos are ok but can do with better pads and fluid. The Atessa works and works wonderfully well. Steering is nice and crisp and precise. Point it and it will go there, much like the Evo really. The sweetest apsect of a GT-R is the RB26. Such a phenomenal motor and responds well to simple mods, but whack a set of 2530s or equivalent on and you have a magical formula. Easily punching out 330+ kw at all fours with the right mods and still retaining stock bottom end, a GT-R is truely incredible to drive. Add a set of 4.11 or 4.5 final drives and it's like you've added another 50kw to the car.

And a GT-R turns heads on the road, while an Evo barely raises an eyebrow. When people look at the Evo, they think it's a riced up boy racer.

My money is on the 33R, unsure how much you would be able to spend on mods after purchasing though.

A more fun and effective option - Either R33 25t or R34 GTT - And spend around 5k on the engine and suspension. Its guaranteed to get you smiling everytime.

The reason why i say that is because a few of my mates with stock R33 gtrs kinda get bored with all the traction. They ALL said that they had more fun and response in the 25t's they owned previously.

However, if you decide to mod the R, funds permitting, thats just going to be another can of whoop-ass story!

Clubby/HSV - Very nice, however you are bound to get bored VERY quickly. Maybe its their linear power curve. The sound of an angry Ls2 at full swing is sweet!

Evo - theyre not so bad, however theyre in a different league. Theres just something about them that i dont like. However though, you will get MORE respect when youre driving a Skyline imho

Buy a Supra. Seriously.

Not as practical, but still quite a comfortable car and can easily make ridiculous amounts of power.

Also, Evo 7s are within your price range, and they have a much better interior, and modern look than their predecessors.

Ok so i'll give you's the rundown,

which ever car it will be will only be sitting in the garage all week till the weekend but only on a sunnyday, It will need to be a great cruising car you can just get in and cruise, very comfortable, will occasionaly be used for highway trips (perfect for clubsport), It will maybe go to a few track events even just once a year, has to be fun to drive, awsome sounding and have lots of poke. how bout evo's much power compared to a 33 GT-R?

Agreed ^^^on comfort - but there is one exception....................

And then you were talking about Track?

When you check over "mxfly"'s post above very carefully, you'll notice that the EVO is ideal for the track..............

... but it's not as comfortable.

Blend of Comfort & Track?

Can't go past the R33 GT-R and keep some of your budget money on deck for the appropriate power upgrades.

Ideal Targa car.

Whenever I am driving the Evo, I am thinking about the GTR.

Only on the rare occasion my GTR is broken beyond all jimmy rigging, I am having trouble finding parts, I need to go to the tip, or pick up a free fusball table, am I thinking about a VY/VZ with a towball and a trailer.

This topic - perfect example why this is one of the best forums around. I simply cannot believe that nobody is talking shyte about the HSV or the Mitsu, just all nice and useful advice, great job guys/gals.

Personally, haven't ever driven the HSV so I cannot comment, but with an Evo - they are just cheap, this cheapness takes away from the driving expereince, experience that is dynamically unreal. I'd go the R33 GTR if I were you.

If I ever bought another import to play with, for straight-out "balls & all" all round performance, it would have to be the EVO. TME 6.5, no question. Ride comfort would not really enter into the equation. :happy:

I currently drive a R33 GT-R Series 3.. best car i've owned, It's reliable, very quick, always turns heads cos it looks crazy on the street. Comfort wasn't an issue until the coilovers (but that was my choice) etc went in but the seats are great, good driving position.

I purchased a late model XR-8 after owning 2x r33 gts-t's, TT Supra & a SR20 180sx and i regretted it. The comfort factor was great and the low end torque but it gets so boring, so fast..

If you do buy one, make sure you have the money to maintain one... it's no clubsport...

it looks like the 33 might be for me but how about the 32? is the 32 any good compared to the 33 in power, handling, comfort etc the only thing I dont like about the 32 is the back dated styling compared to the 33 as it's newer.

    • Next on the to-do list was an oil and filter change. Nothing exciting to add here except the oil filter is in a really stupid place (facing the engine mount/subframe/steering rack). GReddy do a relocation kit which puts it towards the gearbox, I would have preferred towards the front but there's obviously a lot more stuff there. Something I'll have to look at for the next service perhaps. First time using Valvoline oil, although I can't see it being any different to most other brands Nice... The oil filter location... At least the subframe wont rust any time soon I picked up a genuine fuel filter, this is part of the fuel pump assembly inside the fuel tank. Access can be found underneath the rear seat, you'll see this triangular cover Remove the 3x plastic 10mm nuts and lift the cover up, pushing the rubber grommet through The yellow fuel line clips push out in opposite directions, remove these completely. The two moulded fuel lines can now pull upwards to disconnect, along with the wire electrical plug. There's 8x 8mm bolts that secure the black retaining ring. The fuel pump assembly is now ready to lift out. Be mindful of the fuel hose on the side, the hose clamp on mine was catching the hose preventing it from lifting up The fuel pump/filter has an upper and lower section held on by 4 pressure clips. These did take a little bit of force, it sounded like the plastic tabs were going to break but they didn't (don't worry!) The lower section helps mount the fuel pump, there's a circular rubber gasket/grommet/seal thing on the bottom where the sock is. Undo the hose clip on the short fuel hose on the side to disconnect it from the 3 way distribution pipe to be able to lift the upper half away. Don't forget to unplug the fuel pump too! There's a few rubber O rings that will need transferring to the new filter housing, I show these in the video at the bottom of this write up. Reassembly is the reverse Here's a photo of the new filter installed, you'll be able to see where the tabs are more clearing against the yellow OEM plastic Once the assembly is re-installed, I turned the engine over a few times to help build up fuel pressure. I did panic when the car stopped turning over but I could hear the fuel pump making a noise. It eventually started and has been fine since.     • It was picked up on the MOT/Inspection that the offside front wheel bearing had excessive play along with the ball joint. It made sense to do both sides so I sourced a pair of spare IS200 hubs to do the swap. Unfortunately I don't have any photos of the strip down but here's a quick run down. On the back of the hub is a large circular dust cover, using a flat head screw driver and a mallet I prised it off. Underneath will reveal a 32mm hub nut (impact gun recommended). With the hub nut removed the ABS ring can be removed (I ended up using a magnetic pick up tool to help). Next up is to remove the stub axle, this was a little trickier due to limited tools. I tried a 3 leg puller but the gap between the hub and stub axle wasn't enough for the legs to get in and under. Next option was a lump hammer and someone pulling the stub axle at the same time. After a few heavy hits it released. The lower bearing race had seized itself onto the stub axle, which was fine because I was replacing them anyway. With the upper bearing race removed and the grease cleaned off they looked like this The left one looked pristine inside but gave us the most trouble. The right one had some surface rust but came apart in a single hit, figure that out?! I got a local garage to press the new wheel bearings in, reassemble was the opposite and didn't take long at all. Removing the hub itself was simple. Starting with removing the brake caliper, 2x 14mm bolts for the caliper slider and 2x 19mm? for the carrier > hub bolts. I used a cable tie to secure the caliper to the upper arm so it was out of the way, there's a 10mm bolt securing the ABS sensor on. With the brake disc removed from the hub next are the three castle nuts for the upper and lower ball joints and track rod end. Two of these had their own R clip and one split pin. A few hits with the hammer and they're released (I left the castle nuts on by a couple of turns), the track rod ends gave me the most grief and I may have nipped the boots (oops). Fitting is the reversal and is very quick and easy to do. The lower ball joints are held onto the hub by 2x 17mm bolts. The castle nut did increase in socket size to 22mm from memory (this may vary from supplier) The two front tyres weren't in great condition, so I had those replaced with some budget tyres for the time being. I'll be replacing the wheels and tyres in the future, this was to get me on the road without the worry of the police hassling me.
