Yep my car is taking priority for once!

Once its going again, which should be in a couple of weeks, we can start sizing the wheels for the sil80, buy some, and start on body work.

Also at some point we need to pull the motor out and fix all the oil leaks too...and fit the new turbo.

Looking at the pics, im guessing you have a tdo5hr(r means reverse rotation) , with a tdo5h exhaust housing which is why its spinning backward, it may still be a good turbo.

yep you are right but still makes is a useless turbo for us unfortunately. We might still be able to sell it off seperately.

WOW!! Update!!

We spent the weekend fixing the oil leaks like we said we were going to. What a job!!

We ripped the engine out friday night and removed the upper and lower sump, and the front timing cover.

Cleaned all the old sealant off and washed the surfaces up.

Re-sealed everything and whacked it all back together.

Saturday we also ditched the backwards-spinning turbo and fitted our new one! Its a KINUGAWA TD06SL2-20G! Nice external gate 3" vband rear which suited us perfectly.

We sourced a Turbosmart 38mm gate as well and that went on too, after realising the manifold flange for it wasnt flat we had to machine that flat too.

Dropped the motor back in and I made a new DUMB pipe to suit the new turbz. Love using vbands theyre so much easy to work with.

Today got it running again and ran some cooling system cleaner through everything as we found alot of gunk in the cooling system when we removed the engine.

We also got FLUTTERZ!!!..bro.

Next is wheel sizing and some body work.

This weekend we are going to paint all the jambs, inside the doors and hatch and the rocker cover, and paint the roof, mirrors and bonnet vent black.

Cant wait to get this thing done!

There will be another update to follow soon!

  • 2 weeks later...

So we have another update! Lots happening! Lots of pics!

Last weekend we got alot of painting done! Jambs, insides of doors and hatch, roof, mirrors are all done.

We set up a temporary paint booth in my garage to minimise overspray going on everything in the garage..

We started off with all the orange to be painted on the car:

Then we moved onto painting the doors, hatch and petrol cap inside.

Then on Sunday we continued on to the roof. He had to do a few little repairs and primer before it was ready to paint. We also had to prime the rocker cover because it was a bit too ratty to paint.

We also cut the bonnet vent out (thanks Paul for the freebie!) and prepped it for black paint too.

The roof turned out really well! Very shiny! Were very happy with it. It has alot of dust and crap in it but as long as its shiny thats what matters. The finish is really good. Not bad for first timers!!

Doors back on and rubbers and other stuff back in

We got alot done and really happy with the results. Getting closer now!

More bodywork coming up soon.

Who are these mugs?

Man that seems sooo long ago now! Can't believe this build has been going for over 3 years now haha.

Body work is coming along nicely. Hopefully the whole back of the car will be orange by the time the weekend is over. Prep work sucks... but it's good to see the progress.

    • Hi everyone, I've been wrestling with this for a while now and have been trying to find out the cause. For context, the turbos used are Garrett 2860 -5s, the BOV is a BNR32 HKS SSQV IV kit, the car is currently tuned to ~470 whp on 17.5 psi. The car drives normally, pulls well when it doesn't happen, and I can replicate it fairly easily. It does not sound like turbo shuffle or flutter. The engine has only a thousand or so miles and has had this behavior since it was completed. After my engine was built for my R32 GTR, I noticed that the car now sometimes makes an air discharge sound on what appears to be positive boost pressure that sounds really similar to a BOV. I had thought that it was a BOV issue but even when replacing it with a brand new unit, the sound persisted. It seems like it's coming from the passenger side but I may be mistaken. The closest scenario I could find was this post here https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/https://www.gtr.co.uk/threads/maybe-a-boost-leak-opinions.147955/ started by @yakshii and it sounds very similar. As in, at partial throttle once I reach positive boost I begin to hear the same psh psh psh psh psh sound like air is leaking somewhere when I keep the throttle in the same position. It most commonly happens in 4th gear at around 3-3.5k RPM and 5th gear around 2.5-3k RPM, which seems to coincide with normal positive boost thresholds. It might be similar to what @Austrian GTR mentioned about his own HKS SSQV. Notable difference would be that when he applies more throttle when it happens, it stops. In my scenario if I apply more throttle during this repeated psh psh psh sound, the cadence of the sound gets faster and louder rather than stopping. If I lift off slightly and apply throttle again, it will normally stop and pull without issue. I've checked all rubber couplers to ensure that they are tight, but have not gotten the opportunity to properly do a pressurized boost leak test. If anyone has had similar experiences or thoughts on what might be the cause, I'd be very keen to hear them. I also have a video of it happening from inside the cabin, if that would make it easier to understand: https://youtu.be/2zqZXcx8jbA
    • I'd want at least $40K for mine, but thats easy to say cos I'm not selling anyway.
    • That's incorrect. We have 4 seasons, consisting of pre winter, winter, post winter and a small glimpse of hope!
