D2 Coilover Vs Tein Superstreet Vs Cusco?

Hi guys, wondering if you guys could help me decide or give some heads up before i make my decision

Need to buy a new set of coilovers,

thinking of getting a second hand set since i am not that loaded

after some window shopping and quite a bit amount of browsing, my choices are narrowed down to

brand new d2 coilover which is around $1000

Cusco - not sure which series around $600

and tein superstreet $850

condition wise, tein > cusco

well my question is that is it really worth it to get a secondhand tein say instead of new set of d2 coilover?

i dont usually go to a track, hence daily street use, lowered height is what i after the most..

and anyone whats to sell their coilovers? could swap with a stock R34 gtt suspension

also for the compatibility can we fit R33 GTR/GTT coilovers to R34 GTT?

Tein superstreet will have a sensible spring rate at least. They others may not, and if they dont they'll be horrible regardless of condition. Make sure you find out what the rate is before you buy.

there's a saying, "the poor man pays twice". Its probably relevant to buying secondhand coilovers. But I don't think I'd buy the new D2 coilovers either. If you must get used shocks, then get the ones with the best local rebuilding support - Teins. If you can, save another month and buy new Tein SS.

For the people bagging out D2 coilovers have you used them before? I have a set of new D2's in my S13. They are perfectly fine. My brother had tein super streets in his Toyota Soarer, they were good also but from memory he paid $1800 and comparing them to the D2's there was no difference. If you are not taking your car to the track then you may want to look at Bilstein shocks and suitable springs to lower your car. In my opinion that would be a better street setup opposed to coil over suspension as they really are suited more so for the track. Alternatively if you are set on buying coil overs and want some piece of mind I suppose in terms of purchasing quality parts then HSD coilovers are known to be very good. Personally I wouldn't buy second hand unless you knew how old they were and how many k's they have travelled as there are so many buggered second hand coil overs in most imports. I suppose the same argument goes with people bagging out KKR turbos saying they are cheap chinese rubbish....yet the majority of people saying negative things have never used these parts.

yeah KKR are cheap chinese dog shit, I have one, f**king biggest POS, comparable with ebay shit.

this has been discussed before at length about the elcheapo 'coilover' manufacturers making rock hard spring rates and the same valving throughout their entire range = shitty on shitty bumpy uneven australian roads. It's no coincidence that it's always Silvia owners trying to say that they are anything but rubbish.

Bilsteins with circlip height adjustment and some decent springs go for about the same price new as the cheap shit coilovers. I know which way I'd be going.

I hate people who are tightarses when it comes to modding their imports, why not stick to a falcodore if you don't wanna pay for decent stuff.

dude. save your money a little longer, and buy some quality gear.

you can get brand new jic flt-fas coilovers through jis in adelaide for $1500.

dont bother with d2/isc/g4 or any of that shit. absolute garbage. rock hard spring rates, super soft damper rates. youll hate yourself for buying them.

stick with japanese quality. cusco/jic/silk road/tein. hell, id even go parts shop max. you can get those for usd$1000 + shipping.

Of all the brands you have listed you have stated the best shock is for street only....

WRT the D2/G4 stuff, on a shock dyno the performance is poor and the dampening adjuster does almost nothing, unless they have improved them over the last two years. These days most places offer them with spring rate of your choice, so that problem has gone away.

Fitted a set of D2 coilovers to a R32 GTST once, even on their softest setting they were horribly hard.

My tein coilovers have been nothing but solid for three + years, my car(s) handles like a dream and I even went to the trouble of taking them from one car to another when I bought another 32 GTR. I would recommend them for street and occasional track use. They have reasonable ride quality and good handling.

Remember, harder suspension != better handling. I learnt that lesson by proxy when my mate with super hard coilovers went over the side as a result.

ive been running a set of d2 on my 34 for just over a year now and i have been very happy, i got mine new on trademe for 600 NZD

i dont do any track work but i have driven them pretty aggressively thru twisty mountain roads and havent been left wishing i had spent more, although i have never used more epensive or higher quality shock to compare to....

im pretty sure my spring rates are 4 and 6 kg

sometimes if you hit a harsh bump at pace that you werent expecting they can be a bit clunky in the front, but on my set up im sure the noise is a result of the shock topping out

I love my oz spec Tein SS. Save up for a little longer and get yourself some, well worth it, also they are ADR approved (so no defect) and parts rebuild etc can be sourced/done locally a little easier than the other jap stuff. Oh and good luck getting your ebay edition coilovers rebuilt.

Don't skimp on the stuff holding your car body to the road, suspension, brakes, tyres. These are the most important things on a car IMO because IF one fails, you could well be in a lot of trouble (read hello tree/armco/cliff face) at least if your engine or tranny goes you can still steer and brake yourself out of trouble.

hmmm D2's are garbage, ive even got a set here from an evo that broke the camber plates after 3 weeks....

    • 350-400kw will not keep that basically stock motor basically stock very long, especially for track only use. It will decide to need a rebuild pretty quickly. I'd go smaller, and not cheap out with a Pulsar item based on older tech. Get a G25 550/660. Just better in every way. Don't think about changing a turbo until AFTER you change your injectors (S15 injectors x6? What CC are those?) and coils/fuel pump. They won't keep up with any aftermarket turbo.
    • Hey everyone,   Probably been covered 100 times but i couldn't see anything when searching  Time has come to replace / upgrade my turbo, dont have any crazy plans for the build maybe 350 - 400kw in the future  Engine is a basically stock R33 RB25DET apart from Apexi power FC, S15 injectors, Boost controller, Z32 AFM, Cold air intake, free flow exhaust  have been looking at the Pulsar GTX3076R 0.82 will this be a good option? wont be upgrading the injectors and coils till next year then pushing for 300kw so dont want anything to laggy in the mean time, car is track only not street   TIA 
    • A group of friends hired the local drag strip off season, cold weather and no prep means it was super slippery but still allowed for a fun day of 1/8th mile (no ambo meant we couldn't do side by side 1/4) roll racing and Dragy runs.   The wee BMW didn't embarrass itself at all considering the 2WD group I was competing in had a couple of supercharged V8s (an LSA and a blown LS2), a 600kw M135i, a 500kw R32 GTS-t and some other spicy things - I actually ended up beating the blown LS2 & 600kw M135i heads up in roll races and faced the GTS-t in the final, losing by just over a carlength which is far more than I was counting on with a very mildly tinkered with M135i.   For transparency sake this was EVERYTHING to do with being a fairly short distance on a shit track and having something without any lag and a brilliant gearbox, on a prepped track or a full 1/4 I'd have been destroyed. I did do a single sneaky full (well actually turns out I hit the brakes 10 or so metres early) 1/4 mile Dragy run and hit 12.88 @ 109mph on the brakes which is precariously close to my PB in my old GT30R GTS25t that ran 12.6 @ 111mph on Hoosiers  Pretty damn stoked with that considering I had a single attempt, and despite seeming well suited to the conditions vs the higher power cars and the time slip not looking THAT bad I still was having to work hard to not just do a rolling burnout <100kph and doesn't really show it's best at all.  I am pretty sure it would happily match the old R33 with a full run on a better surface
    • Thanks! Shame you got rid of yours. Guys are getting insane power out of them with the newer turbos these days instead of the venerable K04. Just jumped on Carsales and realised that my old Flog is considered low mileage due to it being parked up for close to a decade.
    • I love this. I still have a special place in my heart for Mk4's.
