Hey guys,

I was watching a video on youtube recently about learning how to drift, control your car, etc. The guy appeared to be on an air strip or something. Basically he had a huge flat surface with nothing to hit and no one one around. I don't think it was a skid pan.

My question is, is there a place we can go and hire (I don't mind paying a bit) for a couple of hours where we'd have free time to do whatever we wanted? DECA days and that are awesome fun, but it'd be great to have the skidpan to yourself for a couple of hours just so you could practice power sliding in a large circle, figure 8's, etc. Where did you guys learn to drive like you do?

Cheers.

What about open areas where you don't have to pay and are not in risk of hitting anyone?

There are no such free area's.

Think about it - it's illegal in terms of traffic so anyone offering 'area' must be insured / charge accordingly.

Winton is indeed another, but OP didn't sound as if that was what he was after but ye, that is option #3 and really that's about it.

Fk all in Vic for that kinda thing

You get about 15mins of run time per hour, it runs for 4 hours or so? So you got about 1 hours worth of spinning around in circles.

You are on the pan by yourself to do what you wish.

The less people attending the event, the more time you get but the same amount of costs need to be made up. So you'll all have to pay more in the split.

i thought the street in front of my house was the place to be, especially after some light rain..Every second commodore with P plates goes down it sideways...until the next speed hump, then the stop and start all over again

I've done this before, it's good but very small. I was hoping there'd be a much bigger place somewhere that we could get some speed on.

Other than Deca there isnt much else out there.

You could try other motorkhana events by other car clubs. Some provide free time at the end where you can go mental until you overheat but it wont be a couple of hours haha

How much does Deca cost to hire out? $6000? Get 6 people to chip in $1k each and share 8 hours of driving haha

kieren unfortunetly there arn't abandoned airports like on topgear, or unsused factories/stock yards, but yeh driver training days sounds like the go, then hit winton and maybe once again calder.

murcot's do a advanced driver training program at sandown, it's about $600 but at the end of it, you should know your car better, and depending on your insurance, getter better rates.

iv'e often thought about buying acres, but i work my arse off as a mechanic.

oh and can i have a gripe about learning how to react with your car ??? ive done 3 deca's and spent about 10 mins on the road in my car. im still getting use to it

With the current laws, the passion you have for driving will not be supported.

we own 83 out out way....... group buy on pavement?

well concrete would be cheaper, and more slipery, but no doubt there will be locals or adjoining adjistment properties which will complain. i wonder how many cubic meters we need for a figure 8, or would a medium sized oval be better for practice

p.s. can i be your new best friend ?

And what are you boys gonna do about legal liability / insurance?

Reminds me of that South Park where Cartman buys his own theme park so he doesn't have to wait in queue for rides, then let's in one or two people to pay the maintenance guy to fix rides, and more people in after that to pay for other expenses...then bit by bit it becomes a not so private theme park :D

Truth is alot of people learn how to drive their cars on the street...because there's nowhere in close proximity or with subsidised cost to support this kind of thing, when there should be. Safe injecting rooms for hoons so to speak...but the government would rather help addicts kill themselves than give people with a healthy and tax benefiting passion a place to have fun

    • Sorry to hear your HFM BM57 was faulty,  did you contact HFM I would hope they would be at least grateful for the information if there was some sort of manufacturing fault, you would hope they would be sympathetic even if your item was 2 years old if it had never been fitted. May I ask where it leaked from ?
    • Cats are called Bella, and Donna...  Like that poisonous plant And I remember your 2 monsters, I remember making a little bit of wee when you let them out... LOL I have already installed cat doors into the laundry where their kitty litter is, and the sun room, apart from the cat doors there's not going to be any permanent mounted stuff on the interior walls (interior doors are cheap and easy to replace) I will get a outdoor cat cage thingie once I finish the landscaping out back... https://catnip.com.au/ The only off limit areas are the main bedroom and the gym room....but, currently the cats are curled up in bed, in the main bedroom with the Mrs.....LOL, the off limits for the kittens to the main bedroom lasted about 5 minutes with Jackie I currently only have 1 free standing huge cat tree multiple level scratching post thingie in the lounge room, but, I will be getting another one soon now that I'm happy with the furniture layout in the back room and have a perfect spot for it
    • All of this is making it seem clear that running the Coppermix twin was definitely the way to go, especially in hindsight with how insane tariffs have gotten and the strength of the USD vs yen at the time.
    • That sounds like no chance of even importing one for road registering then Now I see why Duncan wants to check LHD rules for Targa...   I wonder how "bolt in" the AWD would be if you got one imported from the US and swapped it to an AUD one
    • Not to mention they drive like a bucket of bolts! yuck!
