Hi all

Starting a good old build thread to help keep track of the things I will be doing. Kind of like a car diary turned.gif

So Before the GTR I had a MkV Golf GTI. Great little thing. But being fwd was not for me. I was making a respectable 160 fwkw. That car gave a lot of others a run for their money smile.gif.

She had some good stance tongue.gif

So after growing weary of loosing traction for all of first and some of second. I decided to go shopping for a different car. I looked at R32's, for the life of me I could not find one in my price range that didnt look neglected. So then I was all over carsales trying to find out what my next car would be. What I wanted was to get out of the Euro scene. GTi's were/are everywhere. I did not like that at all. I couldnt find any other car that I wanted to be in and I wanted a GTR. Then I decided to start looking at R33's. Just for the record I looked at all of the ones that were in my price range in. They looked so sad. Rusty, dinged up, holes in the dash, high km's which translates to even higher km's by judging the interior.

I remember looking at a series 3 GTR that had the worst Idle, and rust starting around the doors and in the engine bay. A supposed 60xxx km on the clock, dash was in a horrible state, and the seats were torn. Luckily I became a memeber on here prior to entering the market. It became clear that, that car definately was wound back.

So after searching and searching I found a freshly imported '95 GTR, near stock, original paint job, no rust, no dents, imaculate interior, straight as an arrow. The guy who imported it was a stand alone importer, no workshop nothing.

So I gave him a ring, he gave me his address. Off I went to go look at this car. Too many times have I gone to look at a car and be severely dissapointed. Seeing as this was the only one I havent scoped out I was crossing my fingers and hoping for the best.

As I rock up, I see a BNR34 x2, Mazerati, and a car under a carcover. I was drooling or the r34 white with black wheels. Looked hawt.

Then shook hands with the seller and he uncovered the car for me. I had a detailed walk around it. Could not flaw it, except someone being very careless with a buffer. But that was nothing I couldnt tackle. The car looked amazing. At the time it had 85xxx km on the clock with full service history. I was so happy.

He fired it up, and she started without a hiccup. I jump in he goes for a little bit of a warm up drive and asks me if I would like a spin. It caught me off guard, every other dealer or seller either wanted a deposit to show that I would buy the car, or receive some of my persuasion techniques. smile.gif

But not this guy. We hit it off very well.

I drove through a nice windy area. It drove true, it ran smooth, sounded great, idled on the dot. I knew this was the car for me.

So after 2 weeks I met him at the local VIC roads and we made the payment and got the new plates for my new pride and joy.

I was so nervous driving it home. It's the biggest car Ive ever owned. And very well can be the most powerful. biggrin.gif.

With some fresh oil and a quick wash, this was her a few months back.

This is what she looked like when I got her. I knew she needed some love. And I was willing to give it to her.

So after taking a crash course in GTR's from this forum. I started scoping things out. Checked my exhaust = MINES. Checked my ECU = MINES. Read up on the MINES ecu found out it is not really for us Ausies. So I got myself a BNR32 ecu and gave toshi a ring. Got him to give me a nice "safe" tune on 13 PSI.

The result?

Note it did hit 250 on one run. But I was happy. Toshi said the car must be in good condition because of how easy it was to set up the AFR's. Made me even more happy.
With the stock gauge being as gay as aids, I got a defi imitation, shadow boost gauge. So happy. And the car is on 13 psi everytime. i love electronic gauges smile.gif.

Then I started takeling the other things that were annoying me. The facia had scratches. That rubber coating stuff wasnt made for durability was it? haha.

So firstly I painted it black, then I CF wrapped it. I also did my valley cover a nice red.

Then just on the weekend I finally tackled the paint properly. Clay bar and premium wax.

Could not have been happier with how the paint job came out.

Dont worry I didnt use the brush at the local car wash. Bucket and wool wash mit smile.gif.

Whats next?
Get rid of the rear wiper. Its so ugly! haha
Find out what turbo's I have. Seeing as Im hitting full boost at 4k, I dont think I have the stockies bolted on. Car is going in for a good service next weekend. Cant wait to find out what tubbies are pushing her. Fingers crossed for n1's. Yes I will be putting the boost up haha.

Getting new wheels. Enkei RPF1's 18x9.5 +15. Dose that spec sound good?

The overall idea of the car is, get some nice power out of her and enjoy for a while until I saved up the money to get a engine rebuild and then I know Ill be power hungry and we shall see what I would like to do. With my current image in mind, I would the GTR to be a majority street car with the occasional track day here and there. Not chasing power figures just want the car to drive the way I want it to.

Will need to get all supporting mods before I take the power up too far. Stock clutch no good for launches haha. Dont know if I want a twin plate. Seeing as Ill be extracting more power out of her Im not left with many options. But I dont like the fact that a twin plate will wear away quite quickly in stop start traffic. Any recommendations?

Thanks guys. And Ill make sure to keep updating. Also sorry if its too long winded.

Cheers

Damn, it's one nice GTR you have there... I want that front bar.

As for twin plate clutches, grab Nismo Coppermix twin - great streetable clutch and it can take punishment without any issues.

The pictures of GTI, were they taken at Doncaster or Southland shopping centre by any chance (posts look familiar but can't remember which)?

Wheels, grab 18x10.5 +15 or 12 and drop it reasonably and it'll sit flush (as I've said in other thread).

Thanks Grant

I think youll have to pry my front bar off my dead hands haha.

Nismo coppermix ey. Might have to do some research on that.

As for the wheels. I got some 18x10.5 +15's. And the reasonable drop will come, some day when I recoup my money haha.

The GTI made it really unenjoyable sometimes. So I think Ive learned my lesson with low cars haha.

Hahah, nah that was taken in NSW.

I have a little update as well.

Got the car serviced today. Went to Proworks in Matraville. I was very impressed, he definately had a lot of knowledge and a wicked 180sx :).

Car is running smoothly. Got commented on how good of a condition the car was in. Im so glad my patience paid off.

Report I got:

Alls well :D. And they are the stock turbo's :(. Damn. Now I need to get some -7's. Haha.

Also I had a 2nd hand front pipe that I wanted fitted. But no, I need a high flow cat because it wont bolt to the stocky.

Extra things that are added to my list as of today:

High flow fuel pump. Walbro or Bosch?

High flow cat that will mate up to the front pipe.

I also need 265/35/18 tyres for my new wheels. Anyone have a set of 4 they want to get rid of/ know of a place that offer some good tyres at a good price? Hit me up. No shitty nexens thanks.

Yes indeed 9.5's will look a little "weak" on the R33 shape atleast.

I went from that size to 10.5 and it made a huge difference in the appearance and over toughness of the car I reckon. Looking good so far

Thanks for the kind words guys. Trying my best to keep her clean.

Got word that my wheels mite be here by tomorrow :D. Cars already booked in at taleb Tyres :).

Will have pics as soon as installed. I know im going to hate the wheel gap haha. Damn I need coilovers.

  • 3 months later...

So Ive been a bit tardy and havent done much.

A month or so ago the car popped a intercooler hose :(. That made me one sad panda haha. 2 days later and new clamps and spark plugs the car was back in action. Running beautifully actually.

Prior to this I invested in a RO from carcareproducts. Damn Im so glad I did that. The car has just become so goddamn shiny.

Now seeing as I am fairly happy with the cosmetics of it I have moved on to performance. The list of to do's are:

3.5" front pipe with 100 cell high flow cat, incorporated with current MInes 3.5" cat back (tomorrow)

(2nd of March by unigroup)

Powerfc

1000cc ID's

Fuel pump

-9's with 1 bar actuators

Goal? lets see what number the engine likes. aiming for 300 odd kw

I also need some coilovers stat. The 4x4 is getting to me now. But I fear that will be a few months away.

And pictures of what she looks like.

Got my front pipe installed today, along with a high flow cat.

God damn, this is much better than that stupid stock front pipe. Shouldve been my first mod. Spools good, sounds better higher up, no more high way drone. Cant wait for the turbos now. :P

There was a evo as well get straight pipes fitted. Old mate said hes on 295kw on e85. oooo, lol. He was a gimp. Too much money, no sense I reckon.

Oh well, took some photos, sorry but nothing special to see under the car. But I will add that the exhaust shop I went to, sure knows how to weld.

So more to come.

Bought myself a greddy profec b spec 2 express from japan to replace my HKS evc 3.

All thats left to get is a gasket kit for the turbos. Leaning towards a genuine nissan kit from kudosmotorsport. Any suggestions for a gasket kit?

And thats about it. Now I just need to get the car in and get this ball rolling. Damn 2 weeks left to wait :S

    • Some of the filler.   Also if I look under the top flap of metal it starts looking good quite close to the edge. I get the feeling it doesn't go much further.
    • So, I finally started digging at the bit of my roof that was cracking and bulging a bit. Well, it was just thick filler that was covering some pretty bad rust. I didn't find the edges, I was too bummed to keep going.  There are a few holes as you can see. There was just so much filler but looks like no attempt under the filler to prime or use rust converter, just slapped filler on exposed rust.  Anyway, I'm going to take the windshield out and find the edges. I'd love to fix this myself as I'm pretty sure it'll be expensive to get done properly. I was thinking I could just get a cut piece from another E39 and just weld it in place as it would be the right size and shape.  Thoughts?
    • This is the territory of the "Stage 1/2/3 Golf GTI/R" or otherwise off the shelf tune with (relative to before) minor mods. It's easier now. Downpipe and Tune and boom, big increases. Stage 1 OEM+ is where it's at. This is where the niche evolved into and it's really easy to see why. It's rare to even NEED to consider changing turbos or going to aftermarket ECU's or building bottom ends for more power. Stage 1-2-3 will get you a LONG WAY. Civic Type R turbo GR Yaris/Corolla Anything with B58 (MKV Supra/x40i) Anything BMW in General Anything Audi in General Any turbo AMG RenaultSport Turbo offerings Korean Elantra N/I30N Ecoboost Mustangs Focus RS? List goes on. I would argue in the future it won't even need to go on... M3P is pretty rapid out of the box...
    • There is a way, but it's not with the same cars. You need to find the same vintage of car, that we had. Realistically, that was an affordable car with aftermarket parts around. So what people need to find is a car that had a decent base in its day, and can be modified. They're looking for a car year make of 2010 to 2015 really... Aus could have done it if Holden didn't fold as V8 commodores were cheap, and if Ford didn't get expensive thanks to COVID, then you could cheaply play with FG Barras. Realistically, those are just a bit heavier, four door skylines. I'm sure the US and UK have similar cars they could find.
    • Haha I do that.. thats when it chirps..The bit point for me is almost non-existent. Otherwise I stall it. But yes, in terms of performance, the clutch is solid af.
