Yet another great SAU-NSW tech night - massive thanks to Terry for doing most of the organising, and to Todd, Adam and the crew @ JLM for hosting it, feeding us, and answering a bunch of questions (and servicing mine and Terry's cars, and doing a quick check-over on Luke's).

'twas the first time I have seen a car serviced with "flair"! Some of Mtzus little touches made me smile.

Was good getting a better idea of the interactive parties involved in the importing process, and some of the more commonly made mistakes.

Was a good night, glad to finally put some faces to names. All top blokes.

Thanks to all for organising. Todd touched on all the important "issues" most of us face with our cars and gave clear advice and solutions.

In saying that he was very open about the fact that the rules are not in our favour and explained that it is down to the individual on how much risk they want to take driving their defect magnets :P

Clinton and I had a great night and the guys from JLM should be commended for putting on such a good evening and providing very good information.

I will have to call in and see them and pick up some of their Tyre Placards as we run 18 x 9's on all of our cars and it would just make it that much easier if you are pulled over as it is then something obvious that you cannot get defected for.

My only problem for the night was loosing a set of reading glasses which probably dropped out of my coat onto the floor somewhere.

a very broad range of topics touched upon, which was very nice to see.

think if we ever do this again, ill organise a pizza or 2 for todd and I ;)

one last thing, I really appreciated todd letting me put my car on the hoist to check out the gearbox leak.

turned out to be the breather.

and if you read this todd, the centre bearing is done, gearbox mount replaced, a little more spacing added to gbox cross member and centre bearing, and the vibration is almost completely gone.

Please - do tell! :)

PS How's your busted knee Mat?

Just tiny things like the way he removed the sump plug. Something I as a home mechanic wouldn't have though of, like drawing the plug away really quickly as to not get covered in oil. Seeing him give it a little tap once he had re tensioned it after draining. Like a mental check.

Again, the way he bled the brakes specifying hard or soft stokes.

I like the fact you used Nissan filters. :)

    • They are under bucket shims. Tomei provides a test shim kit and then any measurement of shim required. 
    • I always wondered how you were supposed to buy a set of 24 buckets and somehow magically have every single one of them yield exactly the desired clearance. I would have thought you'd need to assemble a cam with either 12 "sample" or "example" buckets of known top thickness (or a single such sample/example 12 times over!!) measure clearances at every valve, and then do the usual math to work out what the actual "shimness" of each bucket needed to be, before buying the required buckets to make up he thicknesses that you didn't have on hand.
    • I now seem to be limited in power due to my rev limit/hydraulic lifters in my built RB25. I'm looking into converting over to Tomei solid lifters. Question for anyone that has done the conversion. I was always under the impression that when using the Tomei solid lifter conversion, you would also require new valves (Longer or shorter stems, I can't remember which).  I don't know where I got this idea, as so far I see no mention of this in any of the Tomei documentation. It just states I need the Tomei solid buckets, solid lifter cams and upgraded springs. As my head is already built, all I would need is another set of 1000$ Kelford cams, 500$ buckets and about 4H hours of my time installing and I'm off to the races!?!? There's no way it's that simple, I must be missing something? 
    • I couldn't agree more. I should have started from the get-go with a NEO or solid bucket conversion. I started looking into converting over to solid lifters yesterday.
