Hi Guys,

Just wanted to check with you guys - do any of your Rb26 suffer a lot of blowby? When on idle and when u rev - do you get a black soot coming out of the exhaust? And when on boost lots of black smoke? Like it is extremely rich?

What is the average oil consumption on the RB26?

Im on Magnatec now - drove for 2 weeks - and i checked 2 days ago it was about half from the F line. Had to top up.

Just want to see if any of you guys experience this - and if any of you know if it is a problem... If it is a problem what is the solution?

This is my first RB26 so im learning as i go along.

Car is running fine - boosts fine as well witha slight misfire at 5500rpm to 6000rpm - should be the coils, will be changing them at the end of the month - just these 2 issues - no leaks other than return hose from the turbines has a slight leak.

Thanks for the help in advance.

Cheers!

What oil weight do you run? I wouldn't risk my RB26 with Magnatec; I use Penrite SIN/Racing/Premium oils.

Search for the AFM solder fix (in DIY section I think). New coilpacks helps, make sure you chuck new spark plugs in as well (BCPR6ES-11, since you have new coils, no need to use 0.8mm gapped plugs). Fix all intake leaks.

My car doesn't use any oil, running off the actuators (~12psi) with standard turbos/ECU/injetors. 5L goes in, 10,000km later 5L comes out.

Odo shows 161k km but who knows how old the engine/car really is.

Are you confusing the car running rich (black smoke) with blow by?

And magnatec?

When on boost it gets a lot of black smoke - but only on boost - looks like running rich..

the blow by is when its on idle - the walls behind the exhaust will have soot on it...

Magnatec yea - i jsut got the car - did a service on it with Castrol magnatec and probably do another service in about 2k km time - so thats a 3000km change... trying to flush as much out as possible..

Noted on the oil - time to do a change soon then... weight is 10-40

What is the common ones you guys run?

Not running AFM - currently on Haltech Platinum Pro - yup looking at new coil packs and plugs end month... Thanks for the tips on the plugs - what brand do you guys usually run on plugs?

Engine is supposedly forged :-

CP Pistons

Eagle Rods

Tomei 270 cams

Springs/Retainers

N1 turbos with HKS actuators

Haltech

Rebuilt done probably about 35000 km ago - estimated... previous owner doesn't know as well..

Other than the oil and blowby - she seems to run very smooth and no glitches other than the misfire..

Oh and im also boosting less than 1 bar - average at 0.8 bar... don't boost it much to be honest...

And that's using way too much oil.

Start planning a rebuild

You reckon... hmmm... donest sound too promising

Any comments on LiquiMoly for the RB...

Edited by deongster

Yeah,you aren't describing blowby.

sounds like moisture in exhaust coming out when you start it up in the morning .

Please explain further.

Hmmmm sorry guys - my apologies - ok when i first start the car in the morning or after driving to work about 30km away - if i were to reverse park the car with exhaust facing the wall - and i rev - there will be a lot of soot on the wall - looks wet and bit oily - my mistake for calling it blow by, blowby is when its from the breathers right? .. Sorry for the confusion...

Any comments on LiquiMoly for the RB as well as what Viscosity you guys use?

The reason for this post is to see if there is a problem and solutions for the problem... thanks for the responses guys

Welcome to the world of high maintenance car ownership!

Plugs are NGK as above. Gap them down to 0.8mm regardless of whether or not you have replaced the coils.

I use Motul products myself although I see LiquiMoly is the No1 seller in Germany!. Just make sure you use a quality synthetic oil.

It shouldn't be using a lot of oil. If it doesn't come right get a compression test and/or a leak down test.

If it continues to pour out black sooty smoke get it put on a dyno (there are good tuners in Sydney) for a tune/diagnostic.

Sounds 'tune' related with regards to carbon soot on idle. But almost all cars run richer on startup to help get up to temp.

What fuel consumption do you get ?

What's you coolant like? clear or murky? Any milky residue under oil cap?

You would be seeing grey/blue smoke from exhaust if rings etc were worn, not black.

Consumption maybe about 400km per tank - crazy - on on Ron98 for now.

Coolant was brownish and a bit milky when bought - like it has never been changed before - doesnt look like it has a gasket issue no oil on top etc - i flushed it down and replaced the whole coolant with new coolant - temperature has ALWAYS been good...

No smoke when idle or driving - only when i boot it and boost comes in at higher rpm - there is always a cloud of black smoke...

Try a thicker oil. When I was using 5-40 I was losing a lot. Changed to 15-50 Nulon at the recommendation of the engine builder and doesn't use any now.

Will try a thicker one after this - and id probably give LiquiMoly a try - it was very good for me in my previous cars in Malaysia - will see how it goes...

hahah thanks mate - high maintenance - i think this one is pretty ok hahah i used to have an Alfa Romeo 155 V6, 155 V6 Turbo, 156 Twin Spark and a 168 3.0 V6 in Malaysia!!! LOL THAT WAS high!!

Noted on the plugs - they are NGK at the moment - dont know the Gap though... but it does use a lot of oil in my opinion - ill try and use a thicker Viscosity and see how it goes..

Try a 15W-50 oil as mentioned and BCPR6ES spark plugs (already gapped to 0.8mm so you don't have to gap them).

400km per "tank", I'll assume 60L and non-highway driving, sounds about right for a modified turbo car. Re-tune might give you better mileage, but those cams won't.

Thanks for the tip!! Yup im definitely going to try the oil and plugs and the new coil packs...

Phew - thanks for the sounds about right part!! hahaha as long as it sounds about right, im ok with it...

First RB - learning curve, always a learning curve =)

You need to find where the oil is getting out. If its being burnt you should see white/blue smoke out the exhaust. Have you looked for leaks? Using a thick oil is a bandaid (but it is cheap).

That is the thing - i don't see any leaks on the block or even head - only on the Turbine oil return hose there is a seep and the front right axle there is a slight leak - other than that - it looks dry - No drips on my tarp i put on the floor in the garage even after leaving the car for a few days...

So i actually don't know where the oil is going too - other than through the exhaust and out... hence the post to see if any one experience the same before...

    • The car/ECU will have all the sensor that it needs and expect to have. I think i do not have to explain to you how the Link is way better specialy if you have swapped engine   I just do not want to deal with any "problems" cuz i have only Nistune which i learned is not that great and in my case cant even deal with that speed problem (Link can) And of course it will be way more easier to tune and diagnose and safe. And for the ECU/speed problem...i dont know.
    • Per Mark Roberts of Sonictune: Mark Robert Author At this time, no. No ETA either 2016-17 models. You will be able to purchase and install a 2018.5+ TCU though   TCU purchasing and pricing info! As we near the release of TCU tuning, I am going to answer some questions I get asked often.   What do I need for TCU tuning? At this time, you will need a 2018.5+ TCU to be able to tune. If you have a 2016-to early 2018, you will need to replace your TCU with the newer version. One good way to know if your TCU is good is if you have auto upshift in manual mode in 1st gear around 6500 rpms. If your manual 1st gear goes to 7k rpm and will hit the rev limiter unless you shift, you have the older TCU.   Why do I need to buy another ecu license/phone flash if I already have it on my ECU tune? The TCU is its own computer module. It is completely separate from the ECU. Because of this, you will be required to purchase a TCU license and, if your tuner has it, the phone flash license required to tune it via phone/bluetooth.   Do I need TCU tuning? TCU tuning is NOT required. However, the faster your setup, the more it will assist in track and dragy time consistency.   If I’m ECU tuned by (tuner A) can I get my TCU tuned by (Tuner ? Yes, since it’s a different module and a completely separate flash, you can have two different tuners. However, it is highly recommend that you have both tuned by the same tuner. For me, my TCU tuning will directly complement my ECU tuning style and features and running my ECU and another TCU or vice versa MIGHT cause some issues. At this time and for the foreseeable future, I will only be tuning my current ECU tuned customers TCUs.     I have a SYVECS AWD controller. Do I still need it? Yes! The AWD controllers main job is to control your AWD system. However, with TCU tuning, you will no longer need the auto-shift function as that will be done through the TCU. The AWD controller will still be very beneficial for racers looking to maximize traction on the launch.     Shift schedule changes: holding gears longer at lower pedal input as well as max shift rpm changes. Please note, the new ECU race rom coming out will address 90% of the shitty drivability issues these cars have through custom maps from myself and Racebox—as well as others I am sure.   Increase shift speeds: as seen in the videos I’ve been posting, the TCU shifts much faster once tuned.   Increased shift pressures: as also seen in the videos, much firmer full throttle shifts.

    • The fancy pants red shock tower brace is finally incoming from MX5 Mania, getting it shipped from 'Merica has been a long and problematic process, and GWR, the 'Merican supplier will not ship directly to consumers outside of the US, Mania basically had to order a heap of them, the colour choice was silver, or red, and we all know anything red adds 5 killerwasps of dynotorques..... Whilst it does fit over a 2.5, and I've seen a few photos and videos of it being installed and fitting, google also says it might get real close to the FAB9 intake front runner, people in the US says it does fit with the FAB9 intake, except for one person who said it slightly touched.......so there is that.....LOL..... As it seems that I am the first in AU to have this combination of parts there's no local knowledge about fitment, so I'm just a willing guinea pig in this endeavour, I'll cross my fingers and toes and hope for the best In other news, I ordered stuff from China  on the same day I ordered the 23° silicone bend from Victoria, the stuff from China arrived a day ago, the 23° silicone bend is still travelling around Australia thanks to Australia Post, and "may" be here next week
    • Very good news...I contacted Racebox about it last night. My car is a 2016 so remains to be seen if it is compatible, requires a TCU swap, or is impossible.
