R34 Vs R35 - Not School Holidays Yet, This Is Not What You Think.

Recommended Posts

Tbh really you're paying for function or form.

The R35 is better in every way. It is.

Value for money speaking, the R34 is really quite a joke when seen through non-nostalgic eyes, there's absolutely no way they should ever be considered close in price to a R35. The R33 GTR is priced appropriately. The R35 GTR is priced "appropriately".

People paying 70+ for a R34 GTR need their head checked, no matter how clean it is. It has at that point left the realm of logical thought and no amount of logical discussion will sway such a person, because logic is no longer applying ;)

Would you pay 70k+ for the cleanest R33 GTR? It's almost what you're doing. 40k premium for a facelift? The R35 is a facelift with a lot of extras over the 34.

You said it's mainly for the street. One of them (not the 34) is going to be noticeably better for the street.

All of the objective reasons in the world are pointing directly in the 35's favour.

Hah, harsh, but I see the point you're making. The value of a car is what the market will tolerate, and at present it is tolerating those prices.

What's your personal experience with each?

The best comparison I've read was in MOTOR Dan.

May 2008. All GTRs are compared and critiqued. This was a main feature.

Greg, you're entitled to your own opinion but many will differ. Anomalies have occurred over the ages. I mean, why would a XY Phase III be worth so much when it was whopped by an XU-1? I could have picked up a Bathurst winner in a XJS with 38,000 Km until my Mum's friend a widow, realised how little it would pull in dollar terms.

Auction prices in Japan serve to dictate BNR34 values here depending on what model. We here in Oz simply reflect that. Maybe Nissan should bring out an N1 R35 -with no leather, no air, no radio/speakers etc?

Don't get me wrong, I understand as good as anyone how subjective value is still value.

And cars beyond your basic corolla are really all subjective value. Noone 'needs' a high performance anything.

What do you get for a R34 over a R33, really. A bodykit? How much time do you spend looking at that bodykit when you're driving the car around? What's the ratio looking at it vs utilizing it as a vehicle?

Personally I have no subjective view of either. But if you could give me one or the other, as an objective choice, for what you have specified you want the car for, it's kind of a no brainer man. The cars really shouldn't be similar prices, and most of the time they aren't.

A nice clean (actually clean) R34 GTR for 45K vs a brand new R35 for 180K there's obviously a different scenario. But if they're both similar price, then, well. Objectively there's no decision to make.

Subjectively, it's all on you, man. You probably won't be upset with either, which is a good thing!

I get what you're saying.

A few of your comments start me on a different tangent too, in terms of R34 values.

Yes the VS2 is closish to the 35 dollar wise, but I could always just buy a nice VS1 for less and then the gap is much bigger. But the black interior and carbon bonnet are so sexy and buying a late model non vspec to get the black interior means having to buy the front and rear aero.

I realise the 34 is mechanically not hugely different to the 33. Looks and interior are very different though.

I was also tossing up between an R34 and an R35.

The R34 really has a front end look that will always be admired.

At the end of the day I went with the R35.

tempted to say drive both and go with your head not heart..

I love the 35 but.....

the idea of a 34 with the price difference between the 2 spent on it ( cosmetics and mechanically) just stirs my loins

Funny, because my heart says R34, it's my head that says consider the 35 because of how much better it is.

Initially though, I'd be comparing higher priced VS2s, but after reconsidering that a nicely modded VS1 could be a winner as well, the price gap widens a fair bit.

I will drive both when the time comes though and I expect prices to have moved around a bit too with the upcoming R36 (which just makes me think VW).

Not sure what most peoples budgets are but even the 09 gtr is still going for high 90's where as the R34gtr is around the mid 40's depending on specs.

I have seen some r34s around the 70's which someone covered before as being a joke. Mods dont add resale value like extensions on a house so why people insist on trying to add 20-30K to the price tag is beyond me but hey if they can find someone to buy it for that price then power to them. It would appear that if you want a r34 then the best bet is to import one.

Ill try and test drive a 35 first but I cant afford $100,000 plus for the new and improved version.

I really like the feedback on this topic as I was curious as to how people view both the 34 and the new gtr.

Its all personal prefernace, me perosnally. The shape of the R34 i cant stand. Some R32's done the way i like look good.

But the R33 for me is hands down the best, id put $150k into a R33 GTR long before i bought a R35

Speed/power is not an issue really, put enough $$ into either one and it will be a very quick car

I don't understand how this is even a question?

10 years made a massive difference in car manufacturing.

And quite a few dollars in purchase, service, repair and modification costs.

Plus nostalgia in the sense that, for me, the R34 was 'the' car. It was attainable, but it was special.

The same reason guys are still rebuilding SLR5000s

So after having a conversation with my mechanic about the R34 vs R35 subject i was told the R35's have transmission problems and to fix it properly is to do a clutch pack and some transmission solenoids or something along those lines aswell as be prepared to spend 20k to fix it.

^^ Nope. Still a problem. They haven't changed much.

My gripe is why do you have launch control on a warranted car and then say launch control is 'for race use only'.

I've heard of warranties being voided because of excessive use of launch control. Why even have it then?

Nissan then exploits the crazy fast 0-100 time with launch control as their point of difference.

Ghaaay.

Not a cheap issue to avoid either is it? A few K for solenoids, clips, and new fluid etc?

LC is not a big deal to me as I have too much mechanical sympathy for that, I get what you're saying though, why have it if you can't use it.

That said, my view on performance cars has always been pay to play, in that a car might be capable of a particular feat, but that doesn't mean you can do it all day every day and not expect the car to put up with it.

    • So, I started this repair and got as far as "fixing" the holes with some fibreglass. God all those years working on boats came back quickly. I decided I'd reach out to some rust guys just to see what they would say about it. I came across a guy about 40 mins away and went to see him. He said the windscreen needs to come out, that there might be some more bits around the windscreen and he'd quote them at the time. But his quote was $300 to remove and replace windscreen and $3k for the damage he can see. He said he could respray the roof for $1200 and the bonnet for another $800 (somebody has previously rattle canned it, its horrendous). This is $5300 + any small additional bits. It's a lot, I get that and the name of one of my fave youtube channels 'Not Economically Viable' comes to mind.  I'm not being financially rational, but I've taken him up on the quote. He's opening a new shop in November with more room, so we're waiting for that. I'll leave the currently missing headliner out until then. I'm looking forward to it being fixed and having the paint looking nice again (lots of clear coat issues on the roof too). / flame suit on.
    • Oh and some up-and-comings; New rear drivers wheel bearing. I'll do that this weekend while the diff is out. The car is already up and the d/c axles and missing exhaust will help with space. This is the last bearing for me to do and I've been dragging my feet on it. I also have some new EBC blue stuff pads for the car and some new brake fluid. I haven't ever flushed the fluid in this car and looking forward to it. I have 600 degree fluid to put in. Not exactly "race fluid" but better than the typical stuff I have been using.
    • A proper clutch/plate type mechanical diff with quite a lot of pre-load and high locking % is better for drifting. Much more consistent in its behaviour. A helical can be annoyingly vague and inconsistent in how it responds under the sorts of abuse found in drifting.
    • Some updates here. I pulled the entire interior out, minus some trim to respray the seats with Colourlock dye. It turned out really nice though I accidentally let the dog in the car after and she scratched up the front seat.  This is what it looked like before, the colour was just washing out everywhere but thankfully the leather was in good nic. Then after the respray   And after the bloody dog jumped in The headliner is out waiting to be retrimmed, but it will stay out now until Nov - see why below. I replaced the stereo/headunit with a period-styled Android headunit. I have no after pics, but I'll get some. This is because of the missing pixels. I tried to fix this twice with replacement ribbon cables but couldn't. Also the bluetooth interface I'd bought for this was crap. Then there's the rusty roof. Pics and info in this other thread. I have decided to get this repaired professionally, but I'll update that thread. This is why the headliner will stay out for now. I'll be getting the roof and bonnet resprayed at the same time the rust is fixed. I also had an interesting issue with my drivers door lock.  For a small period I was having issues getting any 12v power to the car - I mean *any*. It would have no dash lights, nothing. It happened while I was at the shops and I couldn't get in the car. So, we had 2 problems. The most pressing here is that I was locked out. I have only a single physical key hole on the car, the drivers door and no amount of turning would unlock the car. Surely it doesn't need power for this? The second issue is why am I losing all power periodically, The battery isn't dead, its almost like the battery isn't even there. Two issues that were surprisingly easy to fix. You fellow BMW over-engineering lovers will appreciate this. The lock in the door has 5 states; mechanical lock, electric lock, neutral, electric unlock, mechanical unlock achieved at -90 degrees, -45 degrees, 0 degrees, 45 degrees and 90 degrees. Although, the unlock is towards the front of the car, so opposite for LHD countries. Sticking the key in and turning 45 left or right is what is used 99% of the time. It activates the central locking etc. 90 degrees is for dead battery access and, obvs, only un/locks the one door. But because the mechanical lock is never used and is 27 years old, it seizes up. I was totally unable to turn the key far enough to get to the mechanical unlock (At the time of locking myself out, I didn't even know this was a thing). I eventually did it with some vicegrips and teflon spray.  I made a quick vid for other E39 peeps.   The battery issue is totally new to me also - It wasn't making sufficient contact between the post and the terminal. The terminal was bolted on tight, but the car wouldn't have power. After checking the battery with my multimeter I accidentally contacted the terminal and the battery post and the car got power. The battery was only a few years old and in good condition. I cleaned the post and the terminal with a wire brush, bolted it back on tight and never had the issue again. I'm still surprised that despite having solid contact it didn't work. Also, the car was getting Warragamba sized pools of water in the back when it rained. My initial concern was another rust problem. But when I went out on Weds while it was raining and while I had no headliner in I could see a steady stream of water coming through the roof mounted aerial. As this aerial is for the (now removed) car phone I pulled it out and whacked a blanking grommet in the hole. It seems fine now. I'm thinking I might get the hole permanently filled when the rust is fixed. Moving forward and things in progress; The tailgate needs some attention. I have taken all the trim off to clean it all and address some small rust spots. I have partially done all of this but I'll finish it up hopefully this weekend. As all the trim are now entirely devoid of trim clips I have bought a heap of strong velcro and I'm hoping it does a good enough job as any of this trim in good condition is super expensive and usually in Europe as we dont have many of the wagons here. Suspension and brakes!!! This is exciting. In the front; New control arms New sway bar links New lower Eibach springs (the only modification I'm planning on this car) M Sport shocks (these came with the car and will replace the longer shocks in the car) New top mounts Used 540i calipers (stock brakes suck!) New 540i disks and pads (22x296 mm for 528 and 30x334 mm for 540i) New front wheel bearings (thank all that is holy for bolt on bearings!) Annnnd in the back; New control arms New sway bar links Adjustable air suspension arms (fool the car into what the current height is so the self levelling suspension can match the new front ride height) New ball joints I'll also be doing a brake fluid flush while I'm in there. I'm planning on switching the car over to the 16's that came with it so I can clean up and respray the M Sport 17's. They've lost a lot of colour over the years and have some gutter rash. None of this will start until the E90 is back.
    • You mean you will regret it for drifting duties? I don't quite follow.
