Hi,

It sounds like one of my HKS GT-SS turbos is failing ( getting the low siren noise when accelerating ). They would not have many K's on them and was considering just buying a single replacement turbo . They don't appear to make GT-SS turbos themselves anymore so I would have to get the Garrett GT2859R's. I don't really want to upgrade turbos at this stage as I'd be up for another $2500 for a tune alone.

A single turbo is $1400 vs a new kit at about $2,500 for the Garrett GT2859R kit.

What do you guys think? I think it would be best just to replace the single with a GT2859R.

Was in the same circumstance last year.  I decided to remove ($750), refurbish ($1500) and refit ($750) my twins.  To build a single set up (turbo, manifold, wastegate, fabricated IC piping, dump-pipe, exhaust, tune) you'd be lucky to have change from $15,000.  There are obvious benefits, but it is an exercise on the wallet.

If you are looking to stay with your current set-up, rebuild the turbos rather than simply replace them with a second hand kit, this is a much surer way to ensure they won't fail again.  Used turbos hate coming off a car and sitting on a shelf, no matter the mileage.

Where did you get the turbos rebuilt?

FOr a cheaper option, I was looking at just replacing a single turbo from my HKS GT-SS set with the equivalent Garrett - GT2859R. I can get a GT2859R from GCG for $1400 new ( https://gcg.com.au/petrol-performance/performance-4/turbochargers-garrett-t-gt-series/garrett-gt2859r-turbocharger-aka-gtr-9-s-detail ) and use my HKS actuator. That would be keeping the other turbo (provided it is in good condition). So hopefully saving on some labour as well by just replacing the damaged turbo.
Do you think I should just replace both - it would be $2500 for a new 2xGt2859r kit? I could go second hand to probably save a little.

Replacing 1 faulty turbo and replacing it with another 'similar' turbo would cause headaches down the track.

1. GT-SS and 2859-9s are slightly different in spec and will blow differently.

2. You leave yourself open with the other GT-SS being prone to failure, thus setting you up for another remove and replace bill which is the costly part of a low-mount twin configuration

3. for the price of 1 new, you could refurbish both GT-SS', which i still think is the most reliable and cost effective option.  While you're replacing you could opt to replace the water & oil lines with a supertec braided kit over the hardlines which are prone to threading upon removal - https://www.facebook.com/supertecracing/posts/1753715698048181

Yeah 10k later lol

 

Or 3k or less to keep current setup. GTRs are suppose to have twins @Dose Pipe Sutututu thats what makes it a real gtr?

I can get this braided oil & water kit for $143.10 here would that be equivalent to the supertec braided kit?

I was looking at just buying another set of turbos Here . Rebuilding was going to cost only a little less.

I should also buy the turbo gasket kit too here .

Anything else to add to the shopping list?

I wouldnt buy a cheap hose kit. After going single turbo i probably spent closer 1k for braided hoses and fittings by the time it was all said and done.

Your gasket kit comes with new copper washers so as long as the stock lines are good id reuse those.

Would also get a new exhaust gasket (block to manifolds).

This is a great time to do dump pipes if you havent already. Hpi/tomei seem to be the go. Aparently split dumps are the devil lol.

I think you'll find that GTSS and 2859Rs have cartridges with the same part number so the compressors should be the same . Turbine is just a cropped NS111 .

Some time back Garrett wouldn't sell the cartridge on its own . If your sick turbo has a good compressor and housing you should be able to get it rebuilt . From memory Garrett did a turbo called GT2854R which uses the same turbine as the GTSS/GT2859R . Someone who can get that cartridge should be able to use your compressor and housing on that to create the same thing - provided you comp and housing are good .

    • Then, shorten them by 1cm, drop the car back down and have a visual look (or even better, use a spirit level across the wheel to see if you have less camber than before. You still want something like 1.5 for road use. Alternatively, if you have adjustable rear ride height (I assume you do if you have extreme camber wear), raise the suspension back to standard height until you can get it all aligned properly. Finally, keep in mind that wear on the inside of the tyre can be for incorrect toe, not just camber
    • I know I have to get a wheel alignment but until then I just need to bring the rear tyres in a bit they're wearing to the belt on the inside and brand new on the outside edge. I did shorten the arms a bit but got it wrong now after a few klms the Slip and VDC lights come on. I'd just like to get it to a point where I can drive for another week or two before getting an alignment. I've had to pay a lot of other stuff recently so doing it myself is my only option 
    • You just need a wheel alignment after, so just set them to the same as current and drive to the shop. As there are 2 upper links it may also be worth adding adjustable upper front links at the same time; these reduce bump steer when you move the camber (note that setting those correctly takes a lot longer as you have to recheck the camber at each length of the toe arm, through a range of movement, so you could just ignore that unless the handling becomes unpredictable)
    • I got adjustable after market rear camber arm to replace the stock one's because got sick of having to buy new rear tyres every few months. Can anyone please let me know what the best adjustment length would be. I don't have the old ones anymore to get measurements. I'm guessing the stock measurement minus a few mm would do it. Please any help on replacing them would be fantastic I've watched the YouTube clips but no-one talks about how long to set the camber arm to.
