Hi guys, new to the forum and still trying to figure out how everything works, so sorry if this has been answered before.

I've been looking into turbo upgrades and saw that the HKS GTIII-SS turbos are thrust bearing turbos, which drew me away from them.

This had me wondering however, are the GTIII-2530's also thrust bearing turbos or are they ball bearing? I can't seem to find an answer on HKS' website.

Thrust bearing vs ball bearing in a small turbo around the size of the GT2860 is supposedly not a simple trade, supposedly ball bearings have lower shaft speed limits than journal bearings. Of course ball bearing has far superior transient performance because there's a lot less oil causing drag in the center section: 

 

Turbos are more than just their bearings, it's important to keep in mind what their compressor and turbine maps look like. I wouldn't bother with the GTIII-2530 when the GTX2860 gen 2 exists and isn't HKS-taxed but the GTIII-SS in particular has no equivalent on the market as far as I can tell. That's a very small turbo that doesn't go much higher than 20 psi at high RPM in an RB26 before the 0.54 A/R turbine chokes it. R34 ceramic turbos are probably the most responsive low mount twin turbos out there still but I didn't want something that could blow up like the stock ceramics.

I know this might seem silly but I'm a sucker for turbo flutter noises, which is why I'm not keen on running thrust bearing turbo's, since to my understanding you have to run a BOV on thrust bearing turbo's, whereas on ball bearing turbo's you can run no BOV without any real issues?

Yes, that is true that a ball bearing turbo is likely to take that treatment better than a thrust bearing turbo (particularly compared to some of the old 270o thrust bearing turbos). I guess you don't need anyone to tell you it's not ideal either way though

In lots of cases you will find the turbine wheel explodes due to level of centripetal forces pulling against their tip blades before the ball bearing cartridges actually collapse. In Journal bearing system that turbo would be long gone due to thrust bearing wear before the wheels reach their limitations. For majority of built engines operating at 30~50psi they need to run on ball bearing cartridges.

Unless GCG decides to start offering custom orders of the GTX2860 Gen II's, it appears that Garrett has stopped making them. I'm being told that only the 2867s are being made. If my desire is to remain in the twin turbo configuration, are the GTIII-2530s still worth considering?

Are you testing these then? Or currently running them? I'm trying them out because they were easy to source while I'm living in Japan.  Going through an engine rebuild and I needed turbos rather quickly. We're either going to be these or the Tomei T550B kit

This is from UP Garage in Washington, they seem to like the HKS turbos for some reason. They reliably claim that the GTIII-SS is the most responsive turbo you can get for a factory bolt-on twin turbo. The trade is the least amount of power you can get from any turbo other than the factory ceramics. I also saw this chart from someone that ran the GTIII-RS turbos in Japan:

I think it's pretty fair to say most people here really don't like the HKS GTIII turbos though, they are a pretty old design compared to something like an EFR7163. While new turbo tech helps a lot if you're a weird person like me and you've mentally put yourself in the design corner of "must be bolt-on turbo" and "must be as small as possible to reduce turbo lag" then HKS is pretty much the only game in town now other than the tried and true Garrett options sold by GCG Japan and others. Almost nobody has experience with the Tomei T550Bs, I recommend asking Tommy Farrell as I think he's had some customer cars use those turbos. 

Thanks for the insight! I think you and I are similar in regards to bolt on options. There are better turbos out there in the form of a single, but I prefer to keep the form factor and appearance as close to stock as possible. Also, it's way easier to work with certain Japanese Nissan dealerships if things look mostly stock. A lot less questions asked and a lot less refusals to perform basic maintenance.

I still have a hard time explaining away this post, maybe some day I'll be able to get my car on a dyno with a proper tune to figure out if this is remotely achievable:

My local tuner recommended the kit to me knowing that are many other healthy options. Due to my time constraints, I made the purchase.

    • I checked the injectors again (1 and 2, since they’re easiest to access) to make sure they weren’t clogged. Even though the entire fuel system had been cleaned, I wanted to be certain. Everything looked clean, so I reinstalled and connected everything. When I started the car to confirm everything was okay, it immediately revved up high, so I shut it off straight away. I checked to see if I’d missed a vacuum hose or something, but everything was connected. On the second attempt, the car ran without the high idle, but I noticed a distinct “compressed air” sound coming from the engine bay. Tracing the sound, I pushed injector #6 forward slightly and the noise stopped — it turned out it wasn’t seated properly, despite the fuel rail being bolted down. While holding it in place, the car idled steadily without stalling and ran for over 5 minutes. At this point, I pulled all six injectors out just in case I hadn’t seated them correctly or dirt had gotten onto the O-rings. Unfortunately, I discovered that I had damaged 3 out of 6 injectors (the OEM 270cc ones) during installation. So yes, this was my fault. Since only the pintle caps were damaged, I’ve ordered a Fuel Injector Service Kit from NZEFI to refurbish them. In the meantime, I reinstalled my new injectors – the car now idles fine for over 15 minutes without stalling. I have not attempted to drive it so far. It’s not perfect yet, as it hesitates when the throttle is pressed, but it’s a big improvement. Unplugging the IACV with the new injectors idles at around 800rpm, even with the IACV screw tightened fully. But this is probably due to tune.
    • I wanted to try and preserve the front bumper as long as possible, they're not cheap and are made to order in Japan. Taking inspiration from my previous K11 Micra build where I made an undertray for the Impul bumper, I did the same for this BN Sports bumper but a little slimmed down.  This time round I only made a 'skid plate' (if that's the correct wording/term) for just the bumper surface area, the Micra version covered the gap like an undertray. Starting off with a sheet of mild steel approx. 0.9mm thick 4ft x 2ft in size. I traced around the bumper, cut it out and cleaned the edges. Luckily I was able to get two halves from one piece of metal In the video I installed it as is, but I've since then I've removed it to spray and add a rubber edging trim. The rubber trim is suitable for 1-2mm and it's a really nice tight fit. The bolts had to be loosened due to the plates being too tight against the bumper, the trim wouldn't push on I used some stainless M6 flat headed bolts for a flusher finish (rather than hex heads poking down), I believe this style fastener is used for furniture too incase you struggle to source some. The corner's are a little wider, but this may be an advantage incase I get close to bumping it  The front grill got some attention, finally getting round to repairing it. Upon removal one fixing pulled itself out of the plastic frame, one side is M8 that fixes inside of the frame, where as the other side is M5. Not knowing I could get replacements, I cut down an M8 bolt, threaded it inside the frame along with a decent amount of JB Weld.  The mesh was replaced to match the bumper. One hole on the bonnet/hood had to be drilled out to 8mm to accommodate the new stud, once the glue had set it could be refitted. I think the reason the grill was double meshed was to hide the horn/bonnet latch (which makes sense) but I much prefer it matching the bumper Bumper refitted and it's looking much better IMO The Youtube video can be seen here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVZP35io9MA
