I bought the NZEFI 1000CC injectors with the ballaster resistor delete pack. It started fine for a few days and even drove it to the Tuners dyno and back. Then one day i drove it to work, and on my way out of the office, the car wouldn't start. Unless i put the gas pedal all the way to the floor and then crank the engine over.

Called the tuner and we tried a bunch of different settings but trying to figure it out now. Anyone else experience this? Haltech Platninum Pro.

After you start it by holding the throttle wide open, does it then idle correctly without throttle or does it stall?

If not it sounds like one of the injectors might be stuck partly open. You could also drain your oil and check for a heap of fuel in it.

If it doesn't idle there is something wrong with the tune (unlikely, because it worked when it was tuned), or something changed on your car like the AAC or cold start valve no longer working correctly.

BTW, I know we are a multi-cultural forum now, but "gas" makes no sense as a term for the pedal that opens a petrol engine's throttle, either directly or electronically.

It idles and drives just fine after starting. A bit rich on the wideband on initial startup but dosen't stall or anything.
If its one of the injectors stuck open how do i figure out which one?

Gas pedal is the term we use in america lol, we say, "give it some gas", which means give it some throttle.

Post up your injector settings, and also your fuel cranking table.

If it's in ms and not in VE, you're probably flooding the motor during crank.

Very likely this.

Unplug them one at a time and try to start it. A faulty one will be quickly revealed.

Yeah, we know that. But calling it the gas pedal was always daft. America deciding that the fuel was to be called gasoline, instead of petrol was...maybe fair enough. There's nothing too special about the word petroleum to make it necessarily better than the alternative. But the pedal never, not once in the history of the 4-stroke spark ignition internal combustion engine, ever controlled the fuel. It controlled the air. It was the pedal that actuated the throttle. It still is the pedal that actuates the throttle.

Sorry Kevin, didn't mean to raise it, just one of those things that still bugs me after all this time :)

It doesn't make sense that it is a tune issue if it did start OK for a while....having said that this is my cranking table with half the injector you have (550s)

BTW Dose, great movie

It actually means give it less throttle.

Let's be wary though, if cranking is so far off, what else isn't set right?

Are the dead times set right, voltage compensation etc?

It definitely sounds like it's cranking fuel issues, and holding flat to the floor is shutting them down, but I'm with Duncan that if nothing was changed in the ECU at all, and then this started, I'd be more thinking a leaking injector.

Do as Duncan said, drop the oil and make sure it's not full of fuel.

Can you show us the Inj Dead Time table?

When cranking, does the car start then dies without WOT? OR it's not even starting/catching at all?

If it catches and dies, you may need to add more fuel to the Post-Start Enrichment table

My tuner gave me a few tunes to try while we were troubleshooting this issue, so i believe this was one of the tables where he modified it to be extremely on the high end just to see if it helped.

What does this table mean? the milliseconds that the injectors are open between 0-400RPMs at the varying coolant temperatures?

Ok so my table is in ms? Ill try to unplug them one at a time. If i unplug 1 injector wont it be misfiring?

The gas pedal should be called the "air-pedal" 🤣

  • Haha 1

Re the injectors, yes it would missfire but what you are looking for is current behaviour (no start without full throttle) stops and the car starts without throttle (then idles with a miss)

Injector Dead Time Table^^

No the car just cranks and cranks and never catches. It will for 1 second act like its catching but die then cranks and cranks and never starts.

If i push the gas pedal/air-pedal/give it max throttle then it will start.

    • The rain is the best time to push to the edge of the grip limit. Water lubrication reduces the consumption of rubber without reducing the fun. I take pleasure in driving around the outside of numpties in Audis, WRXs, BRZs, etc, because they get all worried in the wet. They warm up faster than the engine oil does.
    • When they're dead cold, and in the wet, they're not very fun. RE003 are alright, they do harden very quickly and turn into literally $50 Pace tyres.
    • Yeah, I thought that Reedy's video was quite good because he compared old and new (as in, well used and quite new) AD09s, with what is generally considered to be the fast Yokohama in this category (ie, sporty road/track tyres) and a tyre that people might be able to use to extend the comparo out into the space of more expensive European tyres, being the Cup 2. No-one would ever agree that the Cup 2 is a poor tyre - many would suggest that it is close to the very top of the category. And, for them all to come out so close to each other, and for the cheaper tyre in the test to do so well against the others, in some cases being even faster, shows that (good, non-linglong) tyres are reaching a plateau in terms of how good they can get, and they're all sitting on that same plateau. Anyway, on the AD08R, AD09, RS4 that I've had on the car in recent years, I've never had a problem in the cold and wet. SA gets down to 0-10°C in winter. Not so often, but it was only 4°C when I got in the car this morning. Once the tyres are warm (ie, after about 2km), you can start to lay into them. I've never aquaplaned or suffered serious off-corner understeer or anything like that in the wet, that I would not have expected to happen with a more normal tyre. I had some RE003s, and they were shit in the dry, shit in the wet, shit everywhere. I would rate the RS4 and AD0x as being more trustworthy in the wet, once the rubber is warm. Bridgestone should be ashamed of the RE003.
    • This is why I gave the disclaimer about how I drive in the wet which I feel is pretty important. I have heard people think RS4's are horrible in the rain, but I have this feeling they must be driving (or attempting to drive) anywhere close to the grip limit. I legitimately drive at the speed limit/below speed the limit 100% of the time in the rain. More than happy to just commute along at 50kmh behind a train of cars in 5th gear etc. I do agree with you with regards to the temp and the 'quality' of the tyre Dose. Most UHP tyres aren't even up to temperature on the road anyway, even when going mad initial D canyon carving. It would be interesting to see a not-up-to-temp UHP tyre compared against a mere... normal...HP tyre at these temperatures. I don't think you're (or me in this case) is actually picking up grip with an RS4/AD09 on the road relative to something like a RE003 because the RS4/AD09 is not up to temp and the RE003 is closer to it's optimal operating window.
    • Either the bearing has been installed backwards OR the gearbox input shaft bearing is loosey goosey.   When in doubt, just put in a Samsonas in.
