Hey guys...

I currently own an eb falcon I6, and was looking into purchasing a r32 gtst (seeing as i cant afford a xr6turbo ba), and was reading through some posts on here and was amazed at you guys considering a gt35/40 turbo big? The stock ba xr6t runs this (please i am not mocking im jus interested), the falcon runs a 4 litre i know but an rb30 is alot more high tech then the falcon (even older falcons like mine are running lot bigger turbos with full boost at 3000ish), there shouldnt be such a problem with spooling times on these engines.... Anyways how much should i be looking at spending on a good condition r32 gtst. Im looking for mid 12second quater pass while normal street drivability, how much in mods (i want a really reliable car too) should i be looking at and more important WHAT mods would i be looking at id really like to show my mate (in the turbo falcon) how its done again.....Thanks guys

Comon guys somebody gotta know how much it'd cost to get a r32 gtst into the 12s and be reliable...

noone can give you an exact price, as prices vary everywhere you go, and vary depending on the condition of your vehicle and its weak points and strengths. It also depends on how you chose to go about your tuning and modification.

Hi 12's or lows 12's?

If you want low to mid 12's youd be up for at least 5 -10 grand on mods i think maybe more. My opinion, get rid of the RB20 and out in an RB30/25 hybrid. I think it would work out cheaper than working the tits off the RB20, your decision. There is a thread on how to do this (R33 RB30 Conversion), i am currently sourcing parts for mine now.

if times are your only consideration, buy a pre-modded R32GTSt and go from there

otherwise the cost won't be worth it

the strengths of the R32 aren't its quartermile times. take one for a drive through some corners, and give the brakes some workout... compared to your falcon (and the BA) and you will be amazed at the braking and handling...

oh, and the difference between a 2L engine and a 4L engine is that its double the size... that's double hte exhaust gas to spool up a turbo. Thus you can expect that a fair sized turbo on a 4L will be large on a 2L.

Its like getting a truck turbo off an 8L engine and bolting it to a BA XR6T... it will be laggy as a mofo. why? its half the capacity...

Warren.

Or buy my car for 22K:) Instant 12s:)

Its prtty easy to get 12s out of a GTST, but its never cheap. The following prices are isntalled prices:

- Intercooler , $1500

- Full exhaust, $1500

- Clutch and flywheel $1200

- GTR injectors, $300

- Pfc and tuning $2000

- Filter and fuel pump $500

- Rear bushes and alignment $200

- Turbo setup. $4,500

- Tyres $800

All bolted to a std Rb20 should see you supporting between 220-250rwkws and doing guaranteed 12.9s and lower. If i can do a 12.9 with a high 2.2, almost 2.3 60ft then a 12.3 is easily on the cards, especially since the car can run 115mph.

Of course if you can pick up a car with the exhaust, intercooler and susp already then you save yourself a nucket of money. And of course you can get the above gear cheaper, and install yourself to almost half the cost, but thhe above prices are more the norm for good gear

This is the fastest R32 gtst that I could see the the SAU timeslip database, and this only just cracks a 12:

And here it is for sale:

IMO if you want to run that time and you want a reliable driver, then this is the sort of thing i'd be looking for. You could spend a lot more than the $20k that Roy is asking getting to this point.

EDIT: And Roy beat me to it

LOL..i often wondered that drag info went to, now i know.

The 60ft time wasnt as bad as i thought. The car can do consistant 13.2s all day with walking the car off the line, grabbing 2nd then getting stuck into it. Usually a 2.4 60ft:(

It shows that the 12.9 was the quickest because that was my best 60ft time, but it wasnt my best mph.

Having listened to ppls words of caution and reservations about gearboxes...im now confident that they are fine at this power level. R31_Nismoid gave a 20 box a pasting with more power then me behind an RB25 for a good while, mine is still fine. Cubes is running one behind his RB30 making 170rwkws, but typically its the torque that hurts them so if its happy behind the 3.0L:)

So before i part with the car im going to give it another go at the drags...i cant even remember if i was running 15 or 18psi...either way if i leave the line with 5,000rpm with the new RE55S and dont granny 2nd gear, then i will be amazed if i dont easily improve on the 12.9

... time to prove it

LOL...this is a discussion forum..so i dont have to prove anything :Pimp2:

... i dont care about having the fastest car...i list all the dramas and info not to be making excuses, but to give others an idea of how their car would be quicker if they addressed some of the shortcomings of my car... lol does that make sense?

It will be up to the next owner to enjoy the car..if he/she cars about proving the car still has a fair bit in it then cool...otherwise it is what it is.

lol i wanna open an R32 shop, like R31 House in Japan. Once you get your head around the R32 GTST they are pretty quick cars if you know where to spend the money:)

yo roy

i'll be down at the SAU NSW drag day 31st July to see what time the r32 gtst can with a 2530 and support gear. Not making as much power as you Roy but hoping for a flat 13.....maybe abit optimistic. :P

Will good to compare numbers with your setup.

Cheers

hehe, wasn't that serious - just curious myself as to what is possible. Somebody here should be able to get a mid-12 from a stock internal RB20.. afterall buzz-box powered SR20 and CA18 powered dattos are getting mid to high 11's... and they weigh about 400-500kg lighter

:uh-huh:

a 12 second R32 GTS-t wouldn't exactly street "driveable" off boost...the turbo lag would suck hard...RB25/26/30 transplant would be the most cost effective mod IMO.

LOL...i know im not going to convince you otherwise, but you would be amazed just how driveable they are...a few SAU guys and gals have driven my car when im under the weather and none of them have seemed to mind.

Sure its not as massivley responsive but...i dont recall who in NSW has driven it, perhaps beer_baron drove it???? Doughboy has, its very streetable off boost and has very good manners on the street!

Its no RB25 with 2530 but there is no way you can say its not streetable...that statement is way off the mark.:P

You would be surprised. R32_Bigboy didnt seem to mind too much putting around town in it and he is an RB30 groupie:)...i recall him being surprised how it drove...and he could be heard screaming "GATE IT" like a cast member of One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest whislt he terrorised a small country town:)

So im a scratched record, if you want big torque and want to put around under 3,000rpm then go the RB30, but dont go around saying RB20s arent streetable...that is just an old wives tail...hell give me $2200 and i can show you an 11second RB20 that is streetable off boost:)

the falcon runs a 4 litre i know but an rb30 is alot more high tech then the falcon

I think you are mistaken thinking the R32 has a 3litre rb30e it infact has a 2 Litre Rb20det which indeed does make it need a smaller exhaust wheel hence smaller turbo.

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
