Roy
Ok, get ready for a rant. We drive cars made in Japan...so its inevitable that terms and trends catch on here. But what is the go with 'Touge' and 'Grip: driving ??? Is it a matter of by calling something that has been around for over a century a different name, all of a sudden we are at the forefront of automotive fashion, or whatever? I dont know why such a pissy thing peaves me off the way it does. Perhaps i need to have a harder look at myself....but for farks sake if you want to get into hill climbs then go and join your local club and get into it. Dont wait for someone to claim ownership of a sport and try to profiteer from it. If you want to get into circuit work then with the same club membership you can start running club sprints. Are we going to see a 'Grip Battle' or a 'Touge Battle' in the near future where the likes of Cabin etc claim it as the latest in automotive fashion out of Japan and start making a packet...even charging spectators whilst clubs struggle as they only charge what it costs to run the day and help bump up the coffers, ensuring the club can offer members the best bang for their buck... ...end rant....oh and here comes the hillbilly / redneck rant. Lets not filter down our car scene with too much from Japan... Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/87500-my-local-touge-and-grip-track/ Share on other sites

"Do you drift it"...and when i respond no, im asked "oh so its set up for grip driving" I think its the seat and crap in my car that prompts the enquiries...mostly i just giggle and say its for safety, so its an Initial D thing is it? GTRgeoff
I'm hear you mate. All these trendy popular terms are simply a means to say, "Hey we do our own 'special' thing." rather than try to come out and compete on an established basis against the bogan local car drivers. (many who can steer a car pretty good as well) I just think it's a way to avoid being judged by existing standards. We all know how hard it is to stop the kids street racing and get them to a race track. That and being "cool" and into the newest things us oldies won't understand. Stupid bloody cefiros. Everytime, its 'DO YOU DRIFT IT!' Im ahh, no, i rasied it to try and make it handle, but I still need to rip this this and this off, and put this on. Then I say Im aiming for track work and street sprints, and they look at me funny. NOT EVERYONE DRIFTS YA KNOW! Damn it. Deadset we should call this place Japmerica. Konrad
Could be worse... imagine the few honest AE86 owners that dont give a stuff about drifting and just try to enjoy their car... poor bastards  Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/87500-my-local-touge-and-grip-track/#findComment-1579730 Share on other sites
someonestolecc
I don't see the problem. It's just typically Ausmerican mass-group-sheep thinking. Everything has to have a name. The counter counter is the counter of the counter counter culture. If you're different, come express you individuality with everyone else! etc etc.. Truth is people are sheep - mass media are great and whatever trend is peddled will be bought.. That's why music charts are so good. Do songs place on it because they're being sold or do they sell because they're on there? (or most likely bits of both?).... And as such we're no different. Things don't exist till they're are given a name. I know entirely too many Hachi drivers here in Newy, and just about all of em drift. But then there are a few, like my housemate for example, who don't. She has her car, because she likes to drive it. Not because she wants to spend her life sideways. But every idiot she comes across thats seen anything of Initial D instantly assumes she likes to drift. Christ it got worse when we put the GZE into it as well. Although, the best part about it is that all these bogan P platers in shit dunny-dores think that shes just a chick who likes Initial D, and then she burns em at the lights Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/87500-my-local-touge-and-grip-track/#findComment-1580319 Share on other sites

zaffa
And on the same hand theres nothing wrong with enjoying drift just because it is pretty mainstream or even grip as i know for a fact a lot of people on here and in the motoring industry dont even se drift as a type of motorsport....in fact the difference between a good drift car and a good track car is merely a bit of suspension adjustment....i know a lot of car enthusiasts who are actively involved in drift however also compete in sprint days and the liikes...each to there own i guess....we're all out there having fun and as long as your having ai guess thats all that matters...however if your doing it just to impress people you should probably buy a crx and go back to cruising on the esplanade... Its so subjective....if a 2.0L Escort blows the doors of my car at a hill climb or a club sprint and gets a tropy for his trouble then so be it. If the same happened at a drift event then it could be for any number of reasons. But if its about a bit of fun then who cares, your right, going to a drift event beats washing the car or watching the Sunday motorsport wrap up on the box...but if its going to be called a motorsport then id want to be measured against something a little more tangible...hell i could have been the world's no.1 tennis player as i looked shit hot on the court, shame i could never make a final Link to comment https://www.sau.com.au/forums/topic/87500-my-local-touge-and-grip-track/#findComment-1580372 Share on other sites
