just got pinned today... :P

i can get the RWC part sorted (ride height, seat belt retractors and non padded steering wheel, afaik - still waitin on letter) but its the EPA i'm worried about... copper didn't say if it was a full test or just exhaust vol and i was WAAAAAAY too scared to ask him as he was in a FOUL mood when he pulled me over.

i have an aftermarket turbo (not highflow but lowmount) / ecu / injectors / fuel pump / BC / exhaust etc

if its a full test and i just put on the stock zorst from the dump or cat back and change out the ecu for the stocker am i gonna pass or are they going to look @ the turbo and simply say no way?

i'd MUUUUCH rather not have to go changing out turbo's as its only been in a week! :)

If you get the full test you will need to remove ecu/inj/turbo & bc. If the pump is just an in tank you will be fine. You might even be ok with a big one in the boot or similar, I never had my boot opened the 4 times I have been.

They will see the colour of you injectors is not normal and you will fail, they will see your shiny HKS heat shield and turbo (yeah they look that closely) and you will fail, they will check your ecu and you will fail.

To answer your question R34 NRG you roll up into a little booth and they visually inspect the car (engine bay, exhaust setup, etc) they will take notes on your setup incase you re-offend. They then stick a probe up your exhaust and do some emission testing (not 100% sure what they do here) I never had a problem with this section.

Then you move you car out to an open space where they test noise. Basically placing a microphone about 1.5m away from the exhasut tip and reving your car to 3/4 (from memory, might be more or less) of the rev range. You must be under 90db.

They then slap a green defect like sticker on if you fail and tell you you have 28 days to fix it otherwise your rego will be suspended, you cant sell the car in this time either (but it can be driven any time).

If you pass you go on your way and pray you never return

I would advise you are very polite and dont try to lie to them, they really know their sh*t.

G'day,

I have one question regarding tyres.

Would road legal semi-slicks such as Bridgestone Re55 pass RWC providing there's decent tread?

Or i'd be better off using radials?

Cheers

Grant

just hoping he didnt bother.... he left in a better mood than when he started (gool ol-fashioned citizen to officer felatio) and left a few things he mentioned off the canary...

*crosses fingers...moreso*

im on the new p plate laws with no engine modifications that increase performance.

would i get away with a lightened flywheel?

They will never find out. But a lighter flywheel wont increase power anyway.

  • 2 weeks later...

Im on my green P's right.. got a r32 gts-t with fmic/pod/bc/turbo back exhaust..

now i know they can get me on the high powered laws if they knew i had the turbo back exhaust and bc.. but can they get me for having the fmic and pod? because stock the car is under the power to weight ratio but if i got rid of the BC and just had a fmic and pod i know they can defect me for having them both.. but can they say my car is high powered because ive modified it and those mods could increase the power?

So what can I do to prove its not.. dyno it and have the sheet's ready if the cop's pull me over to say here are the specific spec's for my car its under the power-to-weight ratio? but then they can say u couldve done that before the dyno etc..

I know the FMIC/POD is illegal for EPA but whethere i get EPA'd or Defected its no big fuss to get rid of the pod.. I was thinking if i get a heatshield made or a sheet or metal covering the pod, i know it wont help me on the EPA side of things but legal wise would it considering the cops wouldnt be able to see it? Or maybe even see if i can get someone to do a custom job with my stock airbox to fit over the pod so you cant see it?

It wouldnt be such an issue if i could fit the airbox in there but apparently where i took it they said theres no room for the airbox, only the POD.. so im not really sure what to do i want to make it look as stock as possible under the bonnet and as legal as it can be til i get off my P's..

From my knowledge, the majority of the time they will go off factory power to weight figures to determin if its oevr what it should be.

If situations where its modded they probably wont accept a dyno sheet from you proving the power, rather they will just tell you to return it to stock or rather epa/defect you for everything under the sun they can find

wtf a cop pulled me over and could find nothing defect me for and end up major defecting my s2 r33 which is stock height for being to low by .5mm. is there anything i can do to appeal it or should i just get a rwc and clear it

Under the bonnet my car isnt heavily modded.. Just fmic/pod, blocked off BOV which i need to unblock, stock plumb back is on there, and im gonna get my SSQV welded near the REO. Also got the R33 turbo but im sure they couldnt figure out that i've changed the turbo. oh and BC but im gonna get a new one installed hidden. But coz of the blue paint job and black bonnet i got now it looks really flashy.. Before i got the car painted i had never been pulled over with my car.. 1 week after the paint job and i get pulled over lol

    • You Gregged a whole racetrack!?
    • Look for broken wire or bad connector at the motor. Might not be it, but is worth starting there, as it is easy.
    • Hi everyone, I’m having an issue with my R32 GT-R. Sometimes, when the car goes over a bump or experiences some vibration, the 4WD warning light comes on the dashboard. When I check the code from the control unit in the trunk, it shows Code 19 – ETS Motor. However, everything seems to be working fine — if I turn off the engine and restart the car, the light goes away and everything functions normally. Has anyone experienced this before? Where should I start troubleshooting this issue? Thanks in advance!
    • I'm back from the dyno - again! I went looking for someone who knew LS's and had a roller dyno, to see how it shaped up compared to everything else and confirm the powerband really is peaking where Mr Mamo says it should. TLDR: The dyno result I got this time definitely had the shape of how it feels on the road and finally 'makes sense'. Also we had a bit more time to play with timing on the dyno, it turns out the common practice in LS is to lower the timing around peak torque and restore it to max after. So given a car was on the dyno and mostly dialled in already, it was time for tweaking. Luis at APS is definitely knowledgable when it came to this and had overlays ready to go and was happy to share. If you map out your cylinder airmass you start seeing graphs that look a LOT like the engine's torque curve. The good thing also is if you map out your timing curve when you're avoiding knock... this curve very much looks like the inverse of the airmass curve. The result? Well it's another 10.7kw/14hp kw from where I drove it in at. Pretty much everywhere, too. As to how much this car actually makes in Hub Dyno numbers, American Dyno numbers, or Mainline dyno numbers, I say I don't know and it's gone up ~25kw since I started tinkering lol. It IS interesting how the shorter ratio gears I have aren't scaled right on this dyno - 6840RPM is 199KMH, not 175KMH. I have also seen other printouts here with cars with less mods at much higher "kmh" for their RPM due Commodores having 3.45's or longer (!) rear diff ratios maxing out 4th gear which is the 1:1 gear on the T56. Does this matter? No, not really. The real answer is go to the strip and see what it traps, but: I guess I should have gone last Sunday...
