Nooby here...

Whats the best recommendation for budget smart people?

Can we have this as a sticky, but with say, proven good cameras for the money?

Oh, and how does everyone mount them?

budget option is a mini DV cam or just some kind of handy cam type camera with standard mount fitted to a roll cage mount or suction mount (not really an option for the handy cams though).

after that I'd go for a used POV 1 or 1.5. they are super reliable, easy to use and give great results and with a cheap external mic give good audio too.

mounting wise I always use a roll cage mount even with the small light POV camera heads but for a system like them with the small remote camera head you can get away with suction mount too.

Thanks for the replies.

What if I don't have a cage and am just tracking my road car? Don't really ike the idea of head cameras cause they'll shake all over the place, no?

Suction mount - goes on the glass?

Am looking at racerecall right now

why not got just a handy cam with HD and flash/sd card recorder (rather then the HD recorder type ones cause of the vibrations). they are cheap, reliable and avaiable at most major appliance stores.

The len's are excelent and you can use them to tape you kids birthday party as well.

Honestly, I'm most concerned about mounting it.

Don't really want it on the dash, rather middle of the car so I can see mistakes in driving etc, but still want to view the road.

I don't mean a camera you put on your head. I mean camera set-ups with the camera head seperate from the recorder. like a VIO POV. I would look at one of those. lots of support, easy to use and great footage. you can pick up a used one on ebay for reasonable money these days.

i reckon this looks pretty good for the price. $~330

Not sure if I have posted here or not, but I use a cheap handycam (tape) mounted to the parcel shelf. I just made up a central mount that fits using the babyseat mounting points, fit the camera to that and away I went. Captures a full view out of the windscreen and down to the gear lever I can watch any missed changes :)

I actually really liked your video and thought it was great right up to the last bit where you lowered your std's to there level by swerving towards that car. You can see your frustration,

Looks like Mark is trying to temp us away from POVs to Radcam....

So Mark.....the POV has treated me well over the years....is the radcam going to be as simple and reliable?

Everything needs an initial charge... Found it easier than a pov personally.

What did you guys have the EV (exposure value) on? I went with -1.0 as recommended in the manual (and Sunny) but found it blacked out the dash too much.

First experience was a good one though and the image quality is great, Should have some footage on YouTube soon from some of the 'ahem' "Good" stages we did in yesterdays rally.

one key thing that anoyed me about the rad cam was the fact that when it shows battery being 2 thirds full its really about to run out. we found that it would turn off at low battery. id go to turn it off at the end of the stage and realise it had turned its self off. id then turn it on and it would show battery 2 thirds full. change the battery and it was good to go. we over come this by running the in car charger and interchanging the battery as soon as it would drop to 2 thirds.

other than that it was a pice of cake to use and footage was grate.

    • @Haggerty this is your red flag. In MAP based ECU's the Manifold pressure X RPM calculation is how the engine knows it is actually...running/going through ANY load. You are confusing the term 'base map' with your base VE/Fuel table. When most people say 'base map' they mean the stock entire tune shipped with the ECU, hopefully aimed at a specific car/setup to use as a base for beginning to tune your specific car. Haltech has a lot of documentation (or at least they used to, I expect it to be better now). Read it voraciously.
    • I saw you mention this earlier and it raised a red flag, but I couldn't believe it was real. Yes, the vacuum signal should vary. It is the one and only load signal from the engine to the ECU, and it MUST vary. It is either not connected or is badly f**ked up in some way.
    • @Haggerty you still haven't answered my question.  Many things you are saying do not make sense for someone who can tune, yet I would not expect someone who cannot tune to be playing with the things in the ECU that you are.  This process would be a lot quicker to figure out if we can remove user error from the equation.
    • If as it's stalling, the fuel pressure rises, it's saying there's less vacuum in the intake manifold. This is pretty typical of an engine that is slowing down.   While typically is agree it sounds fuel related, it really sounds fuel/air mixture related. Since the whole system has been refurbished, including injectors, pump, etc, it's likely we've altered how well the system is delivering fuel. If someone before you has messed with the IACV because it needed fiddling with as the fuel system was dieing out, we need to readjust it back. Getting things back to factory spec everywhere, is what's going to help the entire system. So if it idles at 400rpm with no IACV, that needs raising. Getting factory air flow back to normal will help us get everything back in spec, and likely help chase down any other issues. Back on IACV, if the base idle (no IACV plugged in) is too far out, it's a lot harder for the ECU to control idle. The IACV duty cycle causes non linear variations in reality. When I've tuned the idle valves in the past, you need to keep it in a relatively narrow window on aftermarket ecus to stop them doing wild dances. It also means if your base idle is too low, the valve needs to open too much, and then the smallest % change ends up being a huge variation.
    • I guess one thing that might be wrong is the manifold pressure.  It is a constant -5.9 and never moves even under 100% throttle and load.  I would expect it to atleast go to 0 correct?  It's doing this with the OEM MAP as well as the ECU vacuum sensor. When trying to tune the base map under load the crosshairs only climb vertically with RPM, but always in the -5.9 column.
