Snapped And Threaded Wheels Studs.

Hi all,

Yesterday when changing my rear wheels i noticed one of the wheels nuts was getting tighter as i was unscrewing it, and then SNAP.

Again with another one, it was getting tighter but i managed to get it off without snapping. But now that thread is screwed.

Does this mean the whole hub has to be replaced or can i bang the bad wheel studs out and replace them with new ones?

i had a simalar prob but i only stripped bout 3/8" of the stud. u can take the wheel studs out u just have to thake the hub off and get to the studs. i got a price from nissan 1 stud = 12$ Rip off lol unlucky but ur up for 2

you can get wheel studs for about $2-$3 each from repco, i got some for my old 32 when the same happened to me. just hit the old ones out and put the new ones in, its not hard to do. i'd also be replacing any dodgy wheel nuts.

just had a look i the garage, i've got a couple of spare ones, they are "NICE Products" brand pn: NS457. they were for a 32, 33 may be the same you'll have to check.

So is it reasonable to assume that studs can become brittle and prone to fracture thru' overzealous use of a 'Rattle Gun'? :)

its not that they become brittle, but if they are being slammed down too tight with a rattle gun, or even using too much force with a breaker bar, you can stretch the thred. so when you try to remove them they bind up and you end up snapping them off.

i would NEVER use a rattle gun.... its just bad all round

used properly and set to the right torque there is absolutely nothing wrong with using a rattle gun. i've seen plenty of clowns do far more damage wanging them up super tight with giant breaker bars too, and cross threading nuts etc. any tool used improperly will give you problems.

Yep I dont like them either,whenever brand new tyres are fitted and I get home and check to see if the nuts are tight enough. i am always shocked to see that they have locked them up ridiculously tight and I usually back them off to MY setting

IIRC the workshop manual shows what looks like a ball joint puller being used to remove them. Shouldnt need to remove the hub to do that as long as there is enough distance behind the hub to manoeuvre the studs (i havent done it, dunno)

Re: rattle guns, AFAIK they're only a problem with alloy nuts which dont like the shock loading. Otherwise too much torque is too much torque regardless of the tool used to produce it. IIRC wheel nuts call for 100-110nm, which is WAY less than the 'tards who work at tyre shops use.

Just had it done to my R34, there isn't enough room behind the hub to manouvre the new studs in on mine. I would definately invest in new studs, rather than buying used, as previously mentioned.

Pedders just rooted one of mine by tightening it WAY too far with a rattle gun but it was $6 for a brand newie from nissan. I want to do it myself for the sake of learning and because I don't want to give it back to them to fix it. Does the hub have to come off or can they be knocked out as it sits on my 33 gtst?

i think you'll find there is a notched out section to one side behind the hub, so you rotate the stud you want to remove to there and then it should come out/go in easily.

Ive replaced a couple in a 32 GTSt, they come out without having to take the hub off front and rear.

Beware: Front and rear studs are different.

Why would you buy anything other than a nissan stud? Would be silly not to IMO....

You got ripped, i had to replace 3 studs so i bought 5 from nissan in dandy so i had spares and got change from $20.

      Hi 🙋‍♂️. Just bought my Unicorn but the interior need some minor work so it would match my expectations ;). I noticed it is hard to get used oem floor mats in good condition so i started to dig if there's any chance to buy set of new ones. I found two websites - nengun and amayama and it looks like one can still buy factory new floor mats in Japan, but thers a small issue. Some mats (i assume genuine, oem ones) are marked as G4900 and these are "discontinued". The ones you can buy are marked as G4911 but i have no idea if these are also oem, made by other producer or some lower quality replacements that looks entirely different. Can anyone help? 😃  P.s. there is also some strange indication - 0V005, 0V015 and 0V505. Any idea what does it mean? Would appreciate any help with this 🙏

      Version 1 aluminium airbox is.......not acceptable No pics as I "didn't like the look.....alot" Even after all my "CAD", and measurements, the leg near the fusebox just didn't sit right as it ended up about 10mm long and made the angle of the dangle look wrong, the height was a little short as well, meh, I wasn't that confident that Version 1 was going to be an instant winner I might give Version 2 another go, there's plenty of aluminium at work, but, after having in on and off a few times, and laying in the old OEM airbox without the new pod filter and MAF, there may be an option to modify the OEM air box and still use the Autoexe front cover and filter.... maybe This >  Needs to fit in here, but using the panel, and not the pod, the MAF will need to fit in the airbox though> I'm thinking as the old OEM box and Autoexe cover that is sitting in the shed is just sitting around doing nothing, and they are relatively abundant and cheap to replace if I mess it up and need another, it may well fit with some modifications to how the Autoexe brackets mounts to the rad support, and some dremiling to move it get in there, should give me some more room for activities, as I don't want to move the MAF and affect the tune Sealing the hole it requires to stick it in the air box is simple, a tight fit and some pinch weld will seal it up tight  I am calling this a later problem though

      and it ends up being already priced in as though you're just on 91RON without any ethanol. Car will lose a bit of economy as the short and long term fuel trims bring down the AFR back to stoich or whatever it is for cruise/idle for the engine.

      Oh, you are right. But, in Australia E10 is based on 91RON fuel and ends up being 94RON. Hence it being the cheaper option for economy cars. The more performance oriented cars go for the 98RON fuel that has no ethanol mixed in. The only step up we have left then at some petrol stations is E85.
