The more I race the more I realise the prado isn't the ideal tow car.

The 2012 amarok is coming out with the tourag 8 speed auto which will see me step up to the plate.

That way I can throw a drum or two of e85 in the tray with spare wheels and tools etc.

Might need to do airbags in the rear though.

420nm and 3200kg towing capacity. If you need more just chip it.

I wouldn't buy ones of the current Amaroks going around as they are built in Argentina, the build quality is very South American..:whistling: they are starting to make them in Germany this year so the build quality should be a hell of allot better. Would defiantly get the auto, driving the manuals is like driving a shit box farm tractor, the tourag's diesel v6 motor drives very smooth and quiet for a diesel, it sounds like a petrol motor.

Amarok Ultimate + Tourag V6 + Auto would be a very nice car.

Has anyone towed with a falcoon ute? any dramas? I just bought a 06 BF XR8 Falcoon with the 6 speed auto for a tow vehicle/daily, with the heavy duty tow bar they are apparently good for 2.3 tonne braked...

just picked up a q7 i shall repoport back on it towing

Do want one of these. I hear they are nice to tow with.

6.6L turbo diesel. 420bhp 1400nm. Has a 9 tonne load capacity, 6.2x2.5m storage area with 2.5T loader for getting cars in.

Tire racks, under belly 400L E85 tank, water tank, tool boxes, work bench. 240v inverter power and mains power 6x fluro lights, internal strapping system, 5T winch, towbar.

Holy crap!

umm Brad that is already sold, you can't sell it again.

Between the fact that you just said that, and the fact that I just spent nearly 30K on a new tow car/daily biatch is the only reason it wouldn't be sold for a second time :P

I have mate , they tow very well! , imo , best 2wd ute one the market for towing , probably best all rounder period. (note , the one i had was only a ba mk1 so it had the earlier gearbox , the 6spd would make it better again)

Driven an Amarok for an extended period?

Dad has one, previous cars included a Q7 and his work Falcon Ute. He loves it, and in the driving I've done I found the 6 speed difficult to adjust to on take off (never driven a 6 speed manual before, worried about slipping it into reverse  ), but once I stopped taking off in third it was all good!

No issues with build quality, it's designed as a work/commercial vehicle, so it's a far cry from other VW/Audi interiors.

alright im getting a daily/tow car soon and just trying to choose a car is getting annoying

anyways i got a limit of $5k to spend

options are:

GQ patrol (4.2L)

Holden commo wagon

Ford Wagon

or maybe a land rover disco v8

what you guys reckon??

Commodores have been known to chew out rear tyres at a rapid rate when towing heavy loads without any modifications to the rear suspension, so just be aware of that issue, especially with the VT, VY and VZ models.

yeah i know of this problem, will just have to throw a camber kit in and get a decent wheel alignment if i go down that road

also considering a ford maverick as its the same as a patrol and much cheaper

the auto boxes in the later model commodores (vs/vt/vx, etc) are apparently known to cook very quickly when towing (this came from an auto transmission workshop my fater in law was speaking to recently). fuel consumption when towing a car is pretty shocking as well. definitely go the patrol, however increase your budget just a bit so you can make sure you get one in decent condition.

yeah if i were to go the commo it will get a pretty beafy trans cooler and i know fuel isnt that crash hot

ill probably end up going a ford maverick as they're cheaper and seem to be in better nick than the gq

The VS/VT commodores had a habit of catching fire when towing (a mate of mine was QLD / NSW service manager for Holden at the time). His reports were that the majority (if not all) were due to people towing without a trans cooler. This is a MUST if you want to tow a heavy load with a Commodore.

    • Fark what are the changes of that snapping like that, clean. Nek minnit, custom radiator goes in, with built in oil cooler like those discontinued PWR ones from yesterdeacades ago
    • I thought I'd do a write up on an auto transmission fluid change for a the nissan 7 speed Automatic. At some stage the genius engineers decided that the fluid in the trans was "for the life of the transmission", (which seems kind of self supporting to me) and removed the dip stick and fill tube (funnily enough there is still a casting for it). Anyway, for this job you do need 2 specialist tools in addition to regular hand tools, jack and good chassis stands. You need a way to pump fluid up to the transmission; I got one of these but there are plenty of other options: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/364584087070 Don't trust the generic listing though, it does not come with the required adapter for the Nissan 7 Speed. You need one of these, can't do the job without it: https://navarapart.com.au/product/genuine-nissan-patrol-y62-d23-np300-navara-re7-dipstick-fill-connector1 You need a heap of compatible transmission oil. Could be Nissan, could be anything else rated for Nissan Matic S. You need at least 10 litres, I had 15 to give it a better flush... Also, you need some biiig oil catch trays, at least one of these, or bigger if possible (volume was fine, size was very marginal): https://autobarn.com.au/ab/Autobarn-Category/Tools-%26-Garage/Specialty-Tools/Oil-Service/Garage-Tough-Oil-Drain-Pan-Black-16L---GT1068/p/TO03191 Finally, a measuring jug is very useful if your pump does not have volumes marked on it, I got a 6l one: https://www.repco.com.au/oils-fluids/fluid-accessories/measuring-jugs/penrite-measuring-jug-6l-pmj006/p/A5322648 Oh, and gloves.....this stuff is horrible (not as bad as diff oil, but getting there) ....First, jack up your car.....
    • So I mentioned the apprentice, @LachyK helped take the bonnet off. We just undid the nuts on the hinges and unclipped the gas struts, then pulled the bonnet back a little as the front was catching on the front bar.  I had a good look at everything today and have removed the rams, repaired/reset the hinges and bolted it back together like it never happened. I'll do a separate write up on the repair, and I also removed the poppers from the Fuga today too to save grief down the road.....as said above it is at least $5k to repair retail. I'm also happier about my ability to prepare a race car, and less happy about Nis-nault's engineering (I can hear @GTSBoy sAfrican Americaning) because the top hose of the radiator didn't slip off.......it snapped clean off. By practice I put the hose clamp hard up against the flare on a neck to make it least likely to ever move (thanks @Neil!). I guess that puts a little more pressure on the end of the pipe as it is further away from the rad, but still, that is pretty shit. I've put it back on for now as there was a fair bit of neck still there, but obviously there is no lip on the neck any more so I don't think I'll track it again until I have a new rad. Speaking of which....more research required. It looks like Koyo makes a standard size radiator in ally which I'll grab in the meantime, but I really want something thicker so might have to go custom in the medium term (ouch) Coolant still needs a refill and I have the pressure tester on it over night, but other than a wash down of the engine bay it seems alright. And @MBS206 noted something noisy on the front of the engine and I think I agree....time for a new accessory belt and tensioners I think.
    • our good friends at nismo make a diff for it, I have one (and a spare housing to put the centre in) on the way. https://www.nismo.co.jp/products/web_catalogue/lsd/mechanical_lsd_v37.html AMS also make a helical one, but I prefer mechanical for track use in 2wd (I do run a quaife in the front, but not rear of the R32)
