Do you know what a Slab is marc??

i call them snails as well. squids, snails, hairdryers. all mean the same. squid is just because the turbine wheels look a bit like a spinning squid.

and yeah a slab is the big bit of concrete you build a house or shed on, LOL..... oh you mean beer. yeah we call it that too.

the LS(what ever number) I've seen at work are all alloy, but there are some cast iron LSX blocks that i beleive are after market only

we recently rebored and balanced a LS3 which was going in a 32gtr, and he said that the block bolted straight in to the standard nissan engine mounts, but yeah it is a track car

but for road worthyness sticking with a nissan motor i would assume it would make it easier to engineer and register

If you don't mind toyota a 1uzfe is also an option. Theres a guy on coast i think goldy not sunshine coast and hes got one in a 180sx.

hmm..fair enough...Ive never seen a spinning squid (not much of a fisherman) so i wouldnt know...Its a new one to me :)

The LS1 motor is lighter then an RB motor, but the gearboxes are heavier, providing better weight distribution.

You will need custom engine mounts though, but nothing too difficult.

I've always wanted to do this to an R32, but keep it NA. Nothing more embarrasing then having you arse handed to you by a non-turbo Skyline :)

LSx's, L98's etc have huge aftermarket support and everyone knows how to fix them. Cheap enough and plenty of them. No one makes parts for the VH's except for a few bits and pieces out of NZ like reground cams and CP make pistons for them in teh states, other than that if you want performance parts you have to make them yourself.

I'm 99% through a VH45DE conversion into a Z32, prick of a job and it needs another 200hp :thumbsup: Least in a Skyline you wouldn't have to make a custom sump (like I did), or need a bonnet bulge (like I do), and can fit a couple of turbos up the front (like I can't).

I'm thinking about binning it for a LSx or even going back to a VG30DETT.

+1 For the LS1, LS2. They can be found for 5k or less with the gearbox in wrecks all day long generally with less than 150,000k's on the clock. They go like crazy and will take a hell of a lot of punishment. I saw a LS1 crank out 400hp at the rears with only injectors, tune and induction done, end result 2 snapped tail shafts. But bang for buck and in terms of reliability you cant be the LS series motors. LS series motors are also used in light aircraft kits and in a great deal of kit cars and smaller scale production automotive manufacturers.

All common LS1, LS2 and LS3 engines (5.7, 6.0, 6.2 displacement respectively) are aluminium blocks in standard passenger car applications (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GM_LS_engine ). You can get each with a cast iron block too, typically used in stroker or FI builds. Current kings of the LS hill are LS7 (7.0L), LS9 (6.2L supercharged) and the aftermarket LSX by GM Performance Parts (cast-iron racing block based on the LS7 engine).

Any one of these things, NA or not, will go like crazy when dropped into a lightweight chassis such as the R32.

Just curious, but why not a GTR? Have you already bought the car? Surely if you can afford the conversion a GTR with a dead RB wouldn't be out of reach.

A V8 AWD launch would be pretty impressive to see, and if you want to have rwd fun its only a flick of the switch away.

I highly doubt the RB box would hold up long at all with the torque the LS motors will be putting out and doubt fitting up an LS gearbox to the 4wd GTR drivetrain would be very easy at all

Thought about doing a GT-R conversion, but i think if i bought a GT-R, i'd have to just keep the RB26. Whereas with a GTSt, i don't care AS much lol.

hey mate, im happy to share any info you might want, also my build thread is prety detailed. i see your familiar with it.

i have been asked the question about rego and by my understanding you can legally engineer and register up too 6litre na.

why you would need to then turbo the car is beyond me.

the conversion is very straight forward and almost the easiest i have done.

the fact you can buy a ls2 crate engine complete from intake too sump for 4k also makes it the cheapest.

the mass of aftermarket parts whether it be cams, rocker gear, valve springs, etc is readily available and cheaper than any nissan part.

I love turbod 6s, but they dont compare to the savage torque of a healthy v8.

You learn something new everyday! Thanks for clearing that up for me.

Dont see the point of putting a cast iron V8 in the front of a Skyline, its just added weight. The alloy blocks go a long way to weight saving and improving handling.

    • Hang on. Let me get this straight. The desire is to have coilovers, BC in particular, to be MORE comfortable on Sydney roads than stock suspension? Well, that's obviously not right. BCs have crude damping design at the very best, and typically hard spring rates. BC stands for Billy Cart. And then, the desire is to put in some shitty old worn out stockers, to get it blue slipped and then put the BCs back in? And then.....what? Not worry about getting pulled up by the Plod? Because you seem to have raised a worry about paying for engineering (which actually does solve all your legality problems) and still getting pulled up.... but the only problem there is that if/when that happens you have to show your paperwork at the inspection station. Whereas, if you just swap in borrowed shitty old stockers to get it slipped now, and then you get defected in the future, you have to go find more shitty old stockers then too. You course of action looks like this set of options: Buy brand new stock type dampers, and springs. probably cost a bit more than $1k all up, but will last for the remaining life of the car. Put them in, pass inspection, drive on them forever more. Hell, they could even be really nice Bilsteins and Kings or other lower&stiffer springs if you wanted. Get the car engineered as is. ~$1k. Buy new Shockworks coilvers (or MCA) and also pay for engineering. You're spending a lot more here. But these will be the best things that you could drive around on.
    • Might be worthwhile hitting up Facebook's groups, I know most of them contain terrible people and scammers - however you might be able to find someone that's in Sydney with factory suspension you could purchase and/or hire. Just do not send any form of money anywhere, in person cash only.
    • Thanks @Duncan Ride height is fine. I think it's almost stock tbh. Happy to share a pic. I don't actually have a regular mechanic as haven't lived in Sydney too long. Could you or anyone recommend any shops in Sydney?
    • You just need a different blue slip shop (preferably one you regularly use as a mechanic), and make sure the coil overs are as close as possible to standard height
    • yeah the sugar refining companies were pushing for the same in Oz originally, all fuels were going to have 10% ethanol to make them "cheaper" (noting, that the loss in l/100 might be greater than the decrease in price). I guess they won that fight in Canadia
