i think the 7163 is a bit small for a high boost rb26, as it can be overspun. Same with 7670. however they both provide excellent spool and response so if you use a shaft speed sensor to keep things in check you could be very happy with either on an RB26 - just be prepared to taper the boost up top. The 8374 comes on strong around 3300-3400rpm - so it might be bigger than you like, but i really enjoy it on the RB26 (its one of my all time favorite turbo/engine combinations, so much fun to drive). I am putting the 8374 0.92 back on my RB26 in a couple weeks, after i put the 7163 on my evo

With the internal gated single, say an 8374, do you just use the external gated twin scroll manifold and just block the two gate runners off? I can't see a internally gated option for the manifold.

The other day i saw the McLarens V8 engines they are using in their MP4 & P1. Intersting to note the turbos look a hell of a lot like internal gate EFR turbos hanging off the manifolds

Funny thing is I have a pic in a book at home of a Pontiac Solstice turbo setup (I think?) which featured a twin scroll internally gated turbo with an integrated BOV in the compressor cover (I got the book before EFRs existed)... hard to say what else uses them, or similar ideas, but I found it really interesting.

^ Are those factory turbos manufactured by Borg Warner by any chance?

After a little bit of research, the turbos for the McLaren M838T engine are sourced from MHI

I can't remember specifically, I just recall the EFRs looking familiar when I first saw them and then later remembering how interesting the ones in the book looked. When I get home tonight I'll try and remember to look it up and maybe post a pic

I don't know of any reliable OEM ones yet, so I am guessing it's for the same kinds of reasons. The late model Porsches are frequently going back for warranty claims, afaik.

Though id go the 1.05 rear twin ewg option on your car thats the setup I run and I can only imagine with the 2.8L it would be even better :)

I initially though they were airwerks due to the fact the FMW compressor wheels are apparently the same wheels as EFRs.

But then I saw the pic of what they actually run, which looks to be a custom casting.

EFR 9180 1.05 a/r is in stock, the 1.45 a/r starts shipping in 1-2 weeks.. making progress :)

you can block the WG ports off or use a non-wastegated manifold. here is our RB26 IWG efr turbo manifold:

the twin wastegates are the call for maximum performance. I hope you are happy with the setup!

So which one should provide a better spool the IWG 0.92 or the EWG 1.05 ? or wastegate don't really affect spool up, only boost control ?

the smaller a/r will usually spool the turbo quicker.. as long as the wastegate doesnt crack open prematurely it wont affect spool. The solution is to use a stiff WG spring. turbosmart IWG has been popular lately becuase it uses the same springs as their EWG (up to 3)

i believe BW made the turbos for that saturn skyy/pontiac solstice platform. as well as the cobalt. And the 2011-2012 EcoBoost F150, and 2012+ Focus ST EcoBoost, Fusion, etc.. audi and volvo they all used that style Compressor recirc valve. It works well

Yes I know you can buy housing separately, it would be nice if you can just buy one direct from BW or even from a Indy team???

indy teams now run twin EFR7163 only. there may be some used 9180s floating around, but keep in mind it was not in a ported shroud housing so actually the standard EFR9180 compressor housing will slightly outperform the indy 9180 - given the same turbine housing A/R

What is the reason for switching to the twins?

I would have thought the opposite as the surge slots bypass air to avoid surge hence efficiency losses.

Any plans to bring the mixed flow turbine wheel into other sizes apart from the 7163? If so, what would be the better ass end. The open scroll mixed flow or the twin scroll?

Also very interested in this.

Also interested if BW are looking at a 64mm turbo to fit between their 8374 and 9180?

    • Totally equivalent. Stock often goes from the comp cover because that's where the actuator is also installed and the factory needs 2" of hose to make the connection - and it comes as a pre-assembled unit. They totally have a boost reference from somewhere between the turbo and the throttle(s). Oh, jeez. Just do it in M12 then. We don't actually care that much. I would expect any such AN converter fitting to rely on an o-ring or some other seal onto a flat surface under the flange of the hex**, because bolt threads are no intended to provide a pressure seal. unlike..... pipe threads. **which also requires a suitably flat and smooth surface on the turbo's boss to provide the seal.
    • I also used NP   That’s were it’s seems to be the best place to fit it? All schematic shows also that it’s should be referenced from the turbo housing. But idk, I do see high hp cars without any connection or anything to their turbos, so I really don’t know how they connect their things
    • I do have loctite 243 and 246 and a few more models. I could drill it now in place and make new threads for m12 and order an4 - m12 coupling and fit that to the turbo. Run a braided hose to the EBC which I could get a an4 to 1/8npt

    • Wouldn’t touch par if they gave it to me. You need to ask how much power you’re looking to make and then add about 50% to it because that’s what you’ll end up making  The factory box says no more at about 350kw or so, the upgraded synchro boxes won’t handle much over 500kw for long and at that point you’re looking at an auto or dog engagement manual,  once you’ve gone dog engagement you may as well go sequential, they cost a little bit more but it’s worth it  also while you’re at it you should upgrade the transfer case with 10 friction plates
