I never got why Ay Ay Ron was that funny.

Unless you specifically know a guy called Aaron that consistently makes mistakes.

Also apparently I missed the memo on health insurance.

Did research about a year before I needed an operation, about 18 months prior. When I did the math, the coverage I needed to HALF cover the procedure was $580 a month, which ended up as you'd imagine being more than the out of pocket expense for the thing just paid up straight.

So I never got it. Where'd I go wrong? This was through iselect too, at the time.

Also re: loans.

20k loan?

lol.

There's errors everywhere

First of all someone who needs 20k when a bank will not provide it

Secondly, a person who will actually give 20k to someone without asking the question as to why a bank won't or refused to

Thirdly, lending the money after the first two points were considered, banks are pretty happy to lend money to people when they know they can't pay it. If the bank has said LOL NO then yeah.

Never lend money. Just give money to people if you want to help or would rather not buy a classy vase as a gift instead.

You didn't go wrong, the health insurance companies got it right. They're a business like any other, to make money. They've calculated procedure costs and built it in to their waiting periods so that people like you don't just sign up to get cheaper surgery that you already know you're going to have.

$580 is a huge monthly premium too! Basic hospital cover is much, much cheaper and probably the biggest advantage of having private health insurance, along with common extras like physio and dental and glasses.

That's what I had figured, there was no way that it turned out cheaper to have private health insurance for this specific thing (which was dental/jaw surgery)

But yeah, to pay $15000 in premiums or whatever, for them to only pay half of the procedure (which was less than 10k) seemed dumb, when I could pay it out of pocket and then claim 20% (I forget ratio) back through tax when medical expenses were over $1500 per year at the time.

Left a bad taste in my mouth.

Wondered why anyone would have private health insurance given the bonkers cost.

But then someone mentioned $70 a month which seems quite reasonable.. well, relative to $600 a month.

Lee you play iRacing yea? how you find it? might get into it

Picked up a cockpit/simulator pretty cheap to seat my g27 on

Yeah I enjoy it. Don't dedicate too much time to it out of the sau series. Practise can be fun if in the mood.

I mainly enjoy playing more fun games with the wheel though. Wreckfest, that Italian racing game is on steam and Euro truck simulator are surprisingly fun. Can't wait for oculus rift support

Fkn lol greg you spastick

It's insurance not cheap surgery.

you can't just sign up when you need it.... do youv think shannons would give you policy if you rang them up and said you just had a smash and were looking to reduce costs?

inb4 m. night shyamalalalan twist...

Mohsen is the mate who borrowed the money...

I was leaning more towards him being the dumb flamin mongrel that lent them.the money.

hes avoiding him. he knows where he lives.. i think i might go with him to see him over the next couple of days.

Shiiiit that'll make him pay.

I'll get him his money back, it the guy who borrowed it isn't a complete deadbeat or has nothing of value...

Your mate will only get 10k back, but 10k is better than $0.

FWIW I pay $110/m for the family (4) with medibank corporate.

My hospital stay was $500 (excess) and medibank pick up the rest.

There are some exceptions though, bills have to be claimable on medicare before private will touch them.

So that means any emergency stuff will be covered but things like cosmetic aren't

No, I knew I was having surgery eighteen months later.

I'd have expected (maybe?) for it to cover it.

I was aware there was a 12 month waiting period before you could claim at all.

Which is fine by me.

But even in the scenario which would give the most benefit to the client (like insuring the day before you entirely write off a car) it was wildly not worth it.

Which made me wonder if it was actually ever worth it.

I realise insurance business are only in business because mathematically they are never worth it for the client, but was surprised at the sheer difference and money involved.

The thing is though, Emergency stuff should/is also covered by the public system.

Cosmetic isn't covered anywhere by anything.

So technically, what's the point?

Lets assume that you see good and bad medical assistance in both public and private venues.

Good example would be my arm.

When i hyperextended it and smashed EVERYTHING in my elbow public hospital deemed it "elective" surgery and had a waiting list.

I went private and had the surgery that day from the leading elbow specialist in vic.

After the operation and I've he saw the extent of the damage he said that I'd i had not had the surgery that day and gone on a waiting list i would have had to fuse my arm into a fixed position or have a prosthetic joint installed

Or when i went to emergency and was sent home 3 times despite telling them my brain was swelling.

The 4th and final time i went in i had a seizure followed by an emergency lumbar puncture... but only after i had been left on a bed screaming in agony until 4am.

I went straight to private and was kept there until diagnosed and fit to go home

Have it fused at optimal beer drinking angle lol

It is mathematically worth it for the client, but only in the same way that car insurance is. It's a gamble on financial security. If you never claim on your car insurance then you can say it hasn't been worth you having it cause it was money spent with no return. If you frequently smash cars, then you will benefit, unless Moh.

Those under 30 GENERALLY subsidise the older health insurance clients who are more frequent visitors to medical establishments. These are the people insurance companies lose money on, but the gap (pun) is made up by those who don't claim as much. Premiums are also used to balance this.

Basic hospital cover is good because if you need a hospital it gets you off the public waiting list and can save you thousands. The other levels of cover you need to decide yourself if you're susceptible to injuries and diseases and blah blah - that's life, it's random.

    • Nah. Was just wondering if you were having a small stroke or if there was some slur/gaf/inside joke that I wasn't aware of.
    • That was a fark up, it's Salamanca Place I was thinking of. And now I'm curious as to what potential slur/gaf I have caused with Salamander Road, ha ha!
    • Actually everyone on the roads was really well behaved. The only person that did any minor tailgating was a local hoon in a Turbo Focus. Unfortunately we weren't going the same way so there was no grand initial D touge battle. Lots of people pulled over and let me through. The amount of "Hey man nice car, omg skyline, nice 34 man woo" was suprising. Like really suprising. Like almost annoying. My partner was obviously surprised, she'd never seen anyone in the real world point out the car/like the car/want to chat about the car before, so to have like 3 people per day mention it was notable, I could finally say SEE? SOMEONE THINKS THEY'RE COOL. Everyone was also pretty suprised about the weather. Every day was dry and about ~13-14C. Mount Wellington had a sign that said they close the gates at 9pm and I was heading up there at about ~7:30. It was VERY apparent that conditions were getting significantly worse by the minute on the way up and down. The road on the mountain was terrible though, it's no driving road. I have various suspension related questions now. Luckily it was only about 20 minutes from where we were staying to the top of the mountain as said Google maps. We only had the 2 nights in Hobart. We went to the Farm Gate Market though which was really good - And went down to the Hastings Thermal springs/caves down there during the day. I'd definitely be up for going back again, so luckily there's a few more sights yet to see. Didn't get to do the west coast/queenstown/cradle mountain so this was supposed to be a 'scouting' trip anyway of sorts if I were to one day do/take part in/organize a more car-focused trip. As for the boat, it wasn't bad. Well it was bad, but not in the way you're thinking. We did the night trip which leaves at 6:45 (though you have to be there ~2 hours earlier) and arrives the next morning at about 6am. There is nothing to do on the ship. If you plan accordingly and bring a book/tablet/show to watch/charger you can just chill out, take some Travacalm and just sleep through it. The food there is an extremely basic buffet that costs $32 a plate, or $14 for a $3 pizza. The way back we had a travel kettle and a few different types of cup noodles and made our own tea/coffee in the room. This was a far superior way to do it. At the very least book one of the rooms with beds. I guess as we were in the off season we didn't have room mates. You get an option for rooms with 4 beds (2x bunks) or a room with just the two bottom beds. There's also some option for a deluxe queen bed but it's much pricer. We've been on sleeper trains in Asia before so we figured this is similar (and it was)
    • You just gotta be really, really, really clear and decisive with what you want your end product to be. 99% of people who want this conversion aren't "I want to run a 295 front tyre!" so they don't really need the widebody. They just want the OEM body to look a little less dumpy, so bonnet, bar, skirts job done with some camber, stretch, slam. It's when you want that, but then decide to pivot later you get big problems. See also if you're willing to get an all in one fibreglass bar, and you're willing to accept fibreglass problems like cracking the entire item on a driveway, instead of just a piece attached to the bottom, etc etc etc. Decide this all before buyin'.
