Nah I'd rather educate myself, work hard, make good life decisions, and become successful :)

I agree though, unfortunately those lifelong welfare flogs do exist. However, some magical 'solution' to the affordability 'problem' isn't going to help them and you know it

At 375k - let's call it 420k now (blaze it fgt) - even a conservative 50k wage working as a receptionist with 30% living expenses; a well budgeted individual would have it paid off in 15 years or less...this is assuming you don't earn a promotion or get a better paying job, and that you don't board out the second room or end up with a partner who can co-contribute for a massive dent on the principal and loan term.

What about glorified pa's?

with the drop in interest rates, my interest repayment on my investment property is equal to the rental income.

Am close to converting from negative to positive geared.

There goes more of my money to tax :(

#vwlbc problems

Are you not saving more money off the repayments than negative gearing would give you in tax credits?

Me too, and this is what we have both done... but there are those that either cant or won't. Trust me working in kitchens i have seen many people (usually dishies) that simply will never earn above minimum wage and not due to laziness. They were just not born all that smart (or gifted).

I'd rather attempt to have affordable housing than pay for them just to mooch later on because they have no choice. That also extends to bludgers.... id rather have affordable housing and have them afford a small mortgage than have to pay for them in full.

I wouldn't distinguish laziness too far from brain smarts; I think they are both personality traits whether you inherited genetically or through nurture...a lazy person can become motivated no more easily than someone can improve their smarts with knowledge. Ergo some of these people are perpetually fked regardless of being lazy or not!

You're lazy and smart!

Poor woman had to borrow money from her family to buy her first house...shock horror

Uses as an example the most expensive housing market in the country weighed against the average nationwide wage for a single university graduate

#leftylogic

Why do people think being able to easily buy an inner city property as a single person with any old job is a god given right? And when did this mentality begin? I can't remember my parents wanting to live in Toorak on average wage - they bought on the fringe with decent jobs, which 35 years later happens to be a very good area...now!

How is this even classified as news? Someone rants on facebook, gets a couple of likes & now its mainstream news.

We should just make VWL thread a news page. Make some money off the advertising to pay for houses.

    • The alloy coolant reservoir has a sight glass, so as long as I can see coolant in the sight glass it's GTG, as for PS, it isn't anything catastrophic if it gets low, and as it hasn't lost a drop since I have owned the car I cannot see it being an issue, even after putting the "big block" 2.5 in....LOL The only time it gets slightly messy is at oil changes, as the oil filter sits above the frame, and I need to use a plastic bottle with its bottom cut off to catch the flow when loosening the filter
    • Good on you for taking on the job, but it is a big one. Even if you have bolt on manifold and turbo, you will need: Post throttle pressure source to boost controller to wastegate (and FPR, and ECU/MAP sensor) Pre throttle pressure source to top of BOV(s) Oil feed - you can take that from the standard port in the middle of the block Oil return to block under the turbo - this is much trickier than it seems to route a decent/wide pipe past the manifold. You really can't use rubber hose because it is way too hot there, and also the oil out of the turbo core is a bit frothy so it needs to have a decent diameter Water feed - you can take that from the standard port in the rear of the block. Water return - mine runs to a T into the heater box return, just make sure you don't create a high point making bleeding hard. All of those lines should use 200 series style teflon braided hose with heat shielding because everything needs to be routed past the manifold. Also a turbo beanie is a really good idea to minimise the chance of the car catching fire (under bonnet lining in particular) You also need to decide a cam cover breathing solution as well, will you vent externally via a catch can (probably illegal) or return to the intake (plumbing required and can oil up everything over time) Keep in mind the intake and exhaust piping in the engine bay will be custom so you either need to be able to fab ally and steel or have someone you can get a car that isn't running to. Get the wideband fitting welded into the dump pipe at the same time. Also, just my opinion, a screamer pipe attracts attention and doesn't add power, I'd plumb it back if you want to be allowed to keep the car on the road. BTW do you know anything about how healthy the motor is, and what power you are targeting? Doubling or tripling the factory power on an unknown motor is a little risky. Also fuel system will need some attention (pumps, high current hanger, direct power and earth feed, injectors etc)
