Nah that makes sense, doesn't look like you will need to take too much out. What is the advantage of an external pickup rather than say a 9/1L sump with a extended pickup and say a nismo baffle. Sorry for not re reading the whole thread :)

Love the sexy coatings on those pistons mm and I beam rods hnnng

9/10L not 9 or 1, whoops. This pic of external pickup doesn't look like an improvement over a normal style of pickup that is nice and close to the bottom of the sump

Edit: actually sometimes I am a dc, when the motor is installed it would make this pickup at the lowest point of the sump?

I've got an extended sump and the external pickup. My sump uses the original pickup back into the original position just through the side of the sump rather than through the block. There's really no huge advantage with the external pickup. With an RB30 conversion it's a bit of a pain in the arse extending the standard pickup but can be pretty easily done. The reason I stuck with the external pickup was that the (complete p.o.s in the end) engine I bought had the Tomei pump already modified for external so it was easier to build everything around the oil pump rather than tossing a $1500 part!

Thought I'd better do one more post this year seeing the last one was in January!

Crazy year, too f**king busy to even think about the car.

Built big arse shed (14X8 metres so fits 4 cars easily) myself which turned into a lengthy and testing process!

Bought 2 post hoist for shed, waiting to connect power to the shed to get it set up.

Built (not me personally!) new house.

Spend every spare second of non work time trying to get gardens in some sort of neat condition (but in reality done f**kall really).

Got a promotion at work so now have even less time to actually spend it playing with the car.

I'm going to strip what I've done of the engine back down and start all over again.

Hopefully next year will be better....

oh damn man.

shame, especially when you get excited for a motor and now the wait begins again...

Won't take too long to rip the bottom end apart and reassemble. I'd just hate to bolt it all together, throw it in and spin a bearing in 6 months due to a bit of crap that got in it during moving house and storage. My shed is far from pristine storage conditions so better off starting fresh knowing it's perfectly clean.

Another few months of landscaping and lets hope I can get stuck into it again.

I've started to looking at parts to buy so I must be getting excited about it again! Actually not that I ever really stopped looking for parts to buy, just the excuses I gave myself NOT to buy stuff seem to be dwindling!

Not really Skyline related but will help in the long run (!!) got my hoist erected (not wired and bolted down yet) and half of the shed lights put up and dodgy home electrician wired for now. I've run the power to the shed but need to get an eleccy in to wire up a board and connect it to the hoist.

As you can see the shed is still a bloody mess but getting there.

Nice shed shoota, will be nice when the liner is living in there

She's in but hasn't been touched apart from moving it out of the way to vaccuum under it!

Just fits :)

Hell yeah, it's a perfect fit. When I bought it I asked the guy over the phone how tall it was. He said "about 3.6m I think", I'm thinking "perfect!". I got it home (from 3 hours away where I picked it up), stood it up in the shed and it only just fit in the very peak of my shed which is 4 metres. Dickhead obviously can't read a tape measure..... Thank god it happens to be one of the very few hoists around that has an adjustment in the uprights which dropped it down about a foot. I just have to get the cables shortened which is a lot cheaper than having to lift the height of my shed which is what I thought I was going to have to do! It now fits perfectly and thankfully due to the height of the Skyline it'll still lift to full height without topping out. I won't be able to put SUVS or taller cars up to full height but at least the Skyline and Datto ute will be fine!

Thanks Ben. No, no progress unfortunately. Too busy setting up my gardens and all the other shit life with kids throws at you!

Started running all the wiring through the shed today so hopefully will have the lights and power wired up soon. It's a pain not having decent light to be able to work with. Will be good to have the hoist wired up too (3 phase). I reckon that will give me a bit of a boost of motivation seeing my baby in the air!

One day...

Ok, so I f**ked up. Since I started this drawn out build I've moved house twice which is a major pain in the arse. The problem with the last move is I didn't think it would be so long till i got back to working on the engine so I didn't go over the top in terms of rust proofing. Biiiiiiiiiig mistake....

DSC_0186.jpg

Obviously it's only surface rust but time will tell how hard it is to get off. I'll try a rust converter to start with and see how it comes up. I did intend to pull it all down again anyway so not super fussed but it's far from ideal! The bores are all fine as I drowned them in oil during assembly. My brand new cams also have a bit of surface rust on the front seal face but that'll clean up fine with some wet and dry.

Let this be a lesson to anyone storing an engine (or engine parts) for a while or more importantly, buying an engine that's been out of a car for a while.

Man thats mest up. I hate when life gets in the way. But doesnt seem to big of a deal. I know you will looking at those piston cant help yourself but to get it all sorted out. I was hoping you would have been boosting by now. :(

    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
    • No those pads are DBA too  but they have colors too. I look at the and imo the green "street" are the best.
    • I’m not sure what happened I told them about sonic tunes free OTS tune and the next the I know .. I was booted..   To funny
    • Yea - I mean I've seen my fuel pump which is decades old and uh, while I'm not saying this with real knowledge... but I sure get the ick at using anything in the fuel system that produced the state of that pump. Many years ago I went through multiple pumps (and strainers) before I dropped the tank to clean it out with extreme violence. I'm talking the car would do maybe 50km before coming to a halt, which resulted in me cleaning out the filter with some brake cleaner and going on my way. None of my stuff ever looked like what came out of your fuel tank. I don't think I'd be happy with it unless every single component was replaced (or at least checked/cleaned/confirmed to be clean here).
    • I'm not going to recommend an EBC pad. I don't like them. Just about anything else would suit me better. I've been using Intima pads for a while now.
