Stuck with the black one. Because they blend in well with the other gauges. Nismo white faced speedometer is too much IMHO both presentation and price wise.

I had not thought they were that inaccurate. Have my pivot speed meter anyways so I will be able to compare how inaccurate it really is.

So I have been thinking about whether I should paint the nismo plenum or leave as it is.

Respray options are as follows:

tomei2_zpsfc50e550.jpg

Tomei blue - same color as Tomei Fine Spec engine covers (not really fond of that TBH  )

NismoclubmanR34GTR_zps6080f648.jpg

Dark Grey / Black Wrinkle paint - stock look  (I prefer this option so far)

RedNurR32GTR008_zps6dfec63e.jpg

Clear ceramic coating - one way to paint but retaining the same look

What do you guys think?

Yeah, I have seen those pics before and fell in love with wrinkle paint. In that is what inspired me to paint my engine covers in Red Wrinkle paint, but I will post that up another time.

Black wrinkle is pure porn

Your right David and we are gonna see lots of it :P

Thanks for the input guys.

Made my decision paint the Nismo plenum black!

So first up, the annoying but essential part

IMG_1400_zps6f17f454.jpg

Prep and tape up the plenum. This took me f@rkin aaagggeees to do but is worth it afterwards (I'm also coming down with a cold which is not helping my patience :/ )

IMG_1404_zps9d720870.jpg

Taped up all the bits I think needed to be protected including the very important nismo badge because that makes the car go faster :nyaanyaa: Also gave it a quick wipe with some prep wash

Next, painting time (my favorite part)

IMG_1406_zpsa8c4a162.jpg

Already nice and glossy but that's not wrinkle paint :w00t:

IMG_1405_zps8855e27a.jpg

Actually it is! When you first apply it looks nice and glossy like above. But to make the paint wrinkle you need to spray the object in cross patch pattern i.e. horizontal, vertical and then cross ways but more importantly you need this

IMG_1407_zpsf3837c12.jpg

a heat gun - don't use your hair dryer for two reasons

1. it's probably not powerful enough to generate the heat required to wrinkle the paint

2. you will probably get spanked by your partner for using their precious hairdryer :spank:

IMG_1408_zps0f68ffd7.jpg

here you can see the paint wrinkle process

Set the heat gun to 280-300 deg c that will assist in wrinkling the paint,

a quick tip - keep the nose of the gun close to the object

IMG_1410_zpse41455d3.jpg

A few minutes later it should look like this

IMG_1411_zps4f11c597.jpg

Wrinkled up consistently

IMG_1414_zps43f6a6bc.jpg

After the paint is a bit dryer (this type of paint takes a real long time to dry and get hard i.e. a couple of days but I did all this today), take the masking tape off which also took a bit of time and precision.

IMG_1417_zps015486a1.jpg

masking tape removed

more wrinkles

the underside shot of the plenum

Another pro job Anthony, beautiful. How good is it ticking things off what seems an endless list!!

You can't go wrong with wrinkle black, hence why it was my choice as well haha.

Will look unreal with the Tomei blue

Cheers Robbie.

It sure does feel good to get one more thing accomplished.

Wrinkle paint looks awesome if done correctly. Thinking of doing my standard oem plenum as well because it looks so sexy.

However, I recently found out that my wife and I are expecting another little one, so I am keen to get as much of the car done as possible.

Happy days.

That looks awesome. Might do that to my standard one while I have engine out.

Thanks man.

Do it. It's worth it! You can get the paint from any autobarn store.

It is also considerably cheaper than to engage someone to powder coat it for you and VHT is good quality stuff.

Thanks mate.

I will just use light scrapper and then wipe it with some degreaser or prep wash to clean around the badge. I'm not game enough to use the dremel tool in case I slip and scratch the plenum.

You can easilt use the wrinkle paint as your base then put a colour on top. I have mine in red. I may end up going over it with a deep maroon with a bit of gold pearl through it as the red is just a little bit bland and straight forward and woudl like to go to the colour similar to what was on the original R31 rockers.

Awesome build, you should have a chat to you "Sydneykid" from this forum
about setting the car up for street/track, I just ordered whiteline bushings to
replace all the standard worn bushings plus camber, toe and caster correction
bushing/crush tubes plus swaybars through him, he can also help with the
coilover choice, the Japanese coilovers are usually too hard for our poor roads
and also have very basic valving system due to the dual piston design, he's
currently putting together a Bilstein/Eibach combination for my r32gtr. He's a
very knowledgeable guy

Thanks Elliot,

Yes, I have heard of Syndneykid and have read some of the suspension 101 thread on SAU forum which is really interesting.

Really been struggling with suspension because I have had my eyes on Tein suspension (mono flex or flex type) but cannot seem to make a decision.

The car will be street / track use until I become experience on the circuit and then be just track use (and I will start a new build thread for that later on ;) )

I will actually contact him because I need further advice regarding this want some really good suspension for the track.

Cheers,

    • Hello, sorry for being late to join the discussion, but my clock just died on me.   Ive tried to look at Michaels digital clock repair.docx and it doesnt work maybe the file has expired.   Please let me know if you can re upload it or take some youtube videos to show us how to get the clock installed? thanks
    • I thought that might be the case, thats what I'll start saving for. Thanks for the info
    • Ps i found the below forum and it seems to be the same scenario Im dealing with. Going to check my ECU coolant temp wire tomorrow    From NICOclub forum: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Thu Apr 11, 2013 7:23 am I am completely lost on this. Car ran perfectly fine when I parked it at the end of the year. I took the engine out and painted the engine bay, and put a fuel cell with an inline walbro 255 instead of the in tank unit I had last year. After reinstalling everything, the engine floods when the fuel pump primes. if i pull the fuel pump fuse it'll start, and as soon as I put the fuse back in it starts running ridiculously rich. I checked the tps voltage, and its fine. Cleaned the maf as it had some dust from sitting on a shelf all winter, fuel pressure is correct while running, but wont fire until there is less than 5psi in the lines. The fuel lines are run correctly. I have found a few threads with the same problem but no actual explanation of what fixed it, the threads just ended. Any help would be appreciated. Rb25det s1 walbro255 fuel pump nismo fpr holset hx35 turbo fmic 3" exhaust freddy intake manifold q45tb q45 maf   Re: s1 RB25det flooding at start up Fri Apr 12, 2013 5:07 am No, I didn't. I found the problem though. There was a break in one of the ecu coolant temp sensor wires. Once it was repaired it fired right up with no problems. I would have never thought a non working coolant temp sensor would have caused such an issue.
    • Hi sorry late reply I didnt get a chance to take any pics (my mechanics on the other side of the city) but the plugs were fouled from being too rich. I noticed the MAF wasn't genuine, so I replaced it with a genuine green label unit. I also swapped in a different ignitor, but the issue remains. I've narrowed it down a bit now: - If I unplug and reconnect the fuel lines and install fresh spark plugs, the car starts right up and runs perfectly. Took it around the block with no issues - As soon as I shut it off and try to restart, it won't start again - Fuel pressure while cranking is steady around 40 psi, injectors have good spray, return line is clear, and the FPR vacuum is working. It just seems like it's getting flooded after the first start I unplugged coolant sensors to see if its related to ECU flooding but that didnt make a difference. Im thinking its related to this because this issue only started happening after fixing coolant leaks and replacing the bottom part of the stock manifolds coolant pipe. My mechanic took off the inlet to get to get to do these repairs. My mechanics actually just an old mate who's retired now so ill be taking it to a different mechanic who i know has exp with RBs to see if they find anything. If you have any ideas please send em lll give it a try. Ive tried other things like swapping the injectors, fuel rail, different fuel pressure regs, different ignitor, spark plugs, comp test and MAF but the same issue persists.
