Hi all,

Thought I'd ask the knowledgeable people on SAU this.

I looking for a good turbo for a Toyota 2 litre straight six (1GGTE). Basically chasing 220rwkw + without excessive lag. I would just buy a 2530 but don't really trust second hand turbo's, especially when new ones are cheap.

I have narrowed it down to the Kinugawa TD05 18G and the TD06 SL2 18G.

Basically I'm looking at turbo's that would normally be used on an RB20.

What do you guys think?

I assume you are going T3/external wastegate setup? I'd go a Kinugawa TD05-16G - much better spool and response than the 18G and well capable of 220rwkw, there is virtually no difference in flow potential between the two compressors.

An EFR6758 would be amazing on it (aside from only being T25 flange), or a GTX2863R - if OP is willing to splurge that much. Precision don't really do much in the right size range.

We definitely had issues with boost creep with an internally gated Kando TD05-16G on an SR20DET, but it was easily fixed with a bit of porting - the OEM Mitsubishi TD05s even had the same issue if you opened the exhaust up too much. I think OEM Supra and RX7 turbos can have the same issues as well, even some HKS internally gated turbos have been known to boost creep... its not that unusual with an internally gated turbo unfortunately.

Here is are dyno plots for the 16G I tuned on a stock SR20DET, just did some porting to the wastegate port:

They might work fine on the stock map, but wind them up to maximum flow and all the flaws become evident.

Internal gates have never been a great design and generally flow like crap, as well as upsetting the main exhaust flow through the turbo. BW has taken a step in the right direction with the efr but at nearly twice the length not many of us have the room for one. A hidden external gate off the housing is the best option imo.

As I'm going to be fabricating the dump and manifold myself I guess I should go external gate then, I just don't want to go through the extra expense and hassle of it if at a lowish power level of say 220rwkw it makes no difference between IG and EG.

Because the stock twins are only good for 190rwkw max, even then I have only seen 1 car make that on the stock twins, most make 170-180.

I would like 230rwkw or so, figured I would upgrade to something that would make that power pretty easily and have the potential to make alot more if I want to later down the track. No point chasing 270rwkw or more now as the stock motor wont handle that, and to be honest I would like to just get the best out of stockish motor.

Cost wise it would end up been a lot more expensive getting the twins highflowed, I would guess around $1500+ to do both? That plus dump pipe fab, it'll end up costing about the same as going single.

HKS made a 'highflow' version of the stock turbo's but they apparently are only good for low 200's, so not exactly a massive improvement over the stock ones.

Plus the whole tiny CT12 twin setup is so nasty on those things. The exhaust manifolds are nasty, the turbos are nasty, the dumps are nasty. A single with modern aero and some room to install a decent manifold and dump would have to be umpty bazzillion times better.

    • ok so if i wanted to go 18's i would go for 8's  in front 30+ or 32+ off set at front and the back 9 would be ok? what offset should i aim for.. then can i do some  hunting for wheel rim choices..    If i get this - will this fit all around: Size: 18 x 8.5 +37 - n what tyres size tyre should i get for front n back?  
    • Absolute f*cking nightmare. I had to take breaks constantly, and I was always pissed off when I got home. The line split in Italy on day 2 (we drove from the Netherlands), lol. Driving any narrow European town was... well, sh*t.   Appreciate it man. Here, I'll just drop a favourite from the load I took on Saturday.   I'll update here when things happen with the car, the thing is, with stock power and almost everything chassis-wise taken care of, there really are no problems. 268,000kms now and counting.  
    • Ah! I actually managed to snag a lightly used set.... that aren't so suitable for me right now. They don't work on a GTT without some cutting or creative heat moulding. I thought about reselling them myself cause I didn't want to murder them, but it looks like I'm probably going to attempt to murder them/melt them because I may as well. @GTSBoy @PranK can somebody close this thread?
    • Hey mate,  I have a set, one is slightly damaged but wont be noticable once installed.  Shoot me a message if your still after them 
    • I couldn't wait But, the black constant tension hose clamps were too thick and there wasn't enough clearance at the T/B and I couldn't get it to seat properly, so I had use a silver one there I also added some 3" silicone over the alloy bit that goes through to hole on the radiator support as it looked like it was sitting on the edge of the hole in the radiator support, I never noticed a rattle or anything, but there was a witness mark It is basicly done, and I can live with the silver hose clamp at the T/B, I will get a black clamp for the head vent though where it is attached to the bulkhead fitting  It never stops...LOL, only issue now with the shock tower brace is it slightly touches the under bonnet liner now, if I leave it it will either wear some paint off the brace where it touches, or damage the liner, so I removed the liner to see what I have to work with, with the liner removed I have about 20mm of clearance, but sadly the middle part of the underside of the bonnet is only dusted with paint and looks crap, so I cannot have that, but.... as I have a roll of Carbuilders premium under bonnet insulation in the garage laying around that is only 5.5mm thick (we were going to use it on the boys Patrol, but he crashed the front of it a few months and it was written off, hence why he now drives my old Honda Accord Euro), I'll use the OEM liner as a template and get the Carbuilders stuff fitted up to cover that dusted paint up
