If you get those coils you have to set the dwell correctly or they won't work as they should. Which means you need the password for the ecu.

not sure the bloke here could handle the computer / ECU work ?

Once he touches it my warranty is gone, that is if they will give me the password, I think it will turn into a shit fight

Tried something a little different to see what happens before I go to my mechanic on Monday.

Wound it up slowly in 2nd, when it was between 6000 and 7000rpm it just went flat, sometimes after the flat spot, you could go past 7k and it would pick up again. Did this a few times with similar results, it did not happen at the exact revs but near enough.

In neutral at about 5500rpm it would would make a quiet, blop blop blop sound, rev it up and it would die a little between 6k and 7k a few tinny pop pop pops, and then rev freely to limiter @ 8500rpm

Did I mention I hate farken cars :nuke:

No, I mean slowly driving up to those revs with boost instead of hitting it hard.

When I was hitting it , it would back fire a little and splutter , when I did it slowly to the same revs it just went flat, like it died ?

The neutral thing was strange as I took it to @ 5500 and held it there and got that other result, could not feel that when driving too/at those revs

A couple of times in neutral it revved to the limiter but not freely, it would hesitate a little as it built the revs up

I was just trying to get as much info as I could to give to whoever I can get to fix it, There is a bloke n Port Macquarie I might call on Monday after I see what, if anything my bloke here can do

f**k that makes me mad pete...

CRD ... Worst customer service ever

They have one job, tune the car properly and advise on parts to make it reliable

... Sorry that's 2 jobs

Hi Joey, pretty frustrating and the distance does not help as I have to fly both ways, over $700 each time I leave the car there, adds up after a while :(

Does this problem sound like the coils or the tune.

He wants me to change the plugs again and I think he already knows they will fark up again, well that is if they are stuffed up now. Guess it will give him an idea what could be wrong, but it seems pointless as it has happened twice, after the first tune and after the touch up last week ?

If the plugs are sooting up quickly I would think it is a tune problem, too rich. If this is the case is there a " better plug " to try, I do not want to have the plugs changed knowing they will go tits up without trying a different plug or something.

They have asked me to drop the car off again and leave it there longer so they can go over it and find the water and tune/spark/whatever problem, so I guess it is back to the shop , there goes another $700 :) and hope for the best :/

I will get the starter motor fix ASAP, if you were a mechanic and had just finished an expensive build and started the car and had this noise like it was still engaged once the motor had started, what would you do????? Me I would fix it!

if the car's going back to CRD for an extended period to fix the tune issue, perhaps it's not a bad idea to get them to do the starter while it's there, even if it does cost you more. Saves the hassles of stuffing around with the local bloke, then you can tell CRD that you don't want the car back until it's purring.

Sound to me like they are milking you mate

Get it to someone else to run it up that can tell you exactly what is going on

Next time your there ask to see their mechanics licence lol

that helps mate, two great minds think alike, $1600 for a 98 tune was a good place to start , well $9k over quotes wasn't a bad start ,haha

Any thoughts on using a certain plug ??

I am having a problem thinking about going back to them, I thought I was done and dusted :(

Get one out and tell us what it is, even use feeler gauge to get gap

Should be a BCPR7ES with a 0.8/0.7mm gap

It sound to me like the spark is getting drowned which is why you are getting black smoke out the exhaust, if you can see it in the rear veiw mirror then there is alot of it meaning there is way to much fuel

A plug change won't fix it.

I'd like to think that they won't charge you for the tune fix up.

Surely Australian consumer law gives some protection, their service should be fit for the purpose .

Seeing as you've spent a tone of money there they really should sort it out asap.

You could have bought a brand new safer performance car for the money sunk into this one, so it should be sweet with no issues.

More like a shit load of soot , not smoke as such.

I am crook atm , I will take it to a mechanic so I have a professional opinion, it should be interesting to hear what they say.

But I will have them check the plugs and if they are stuffed or not the ones you recommend I will have them follow you instructions , thanks

Yeah Ben, 20/20 hindsight is great and I wish I had it. Being suborn can be expensive, but I usually end up with what I want :)

I will see how this all pans out and what I want to do about it, but before I could do anything I would have to give them a chance to fix it. They asked me to bring the car back in and give them some time to check it out and fix the problem

The other option is to go to a different shop and get them to sort it out, not sure about the locked ECU or if they can just scrap the old tune and just do a newbie ?

I am very doubtful a cahnge of plugs will fix your issues, just what to know what they out in there as that is realisticly what you should have

My best guess is it is tuned to rich

No doubt it is rich and from my experience and what you have said they tune rich all the time. This is why they want me to change the plugs

The plug change will give me an indication where the issue is.

Too rich is bad and stupid. Gives us the indication they don't know what they are doing.

That makes 2 of us, I am stuffed if I know what I am doing anymore.

Why do they tune rich, is there some short time advantage until the plugs foul up ?

    • For DBA, check out their guide table here. https://dba.com.au/wp-content/uploads/2023/01/Direct_Replacement-Guide-2021.2.pdf   Additionally they have some other guides and info on how to make sure you choose the right pad.
    • Sorry, just assumed that talk of coloured pads meant EBC red/green/yellow/shit stuff. I don't know the DBA pads, but it's a reasonable bet that they will be OK. DBA make good stuff generally. Those 4000 series rotors I linked to are very good. I may well replace the RDA rotors I have with those when required.
    • The average previous owner for these cars were basically S-chassis owners in the US. Teenagers or teenager-adjacent. I often tell people that neglect is easier to fix than something that was actively "repaired" by previous owners.
    • Update 3: Hi all It's been a while. Quite a lot of things happened in the meantime, among other things the car is (almost) back together and ready to be started again. Things that I fixed or changed: Full turbo removal, fitting back the OEM turbo oil hardlines. Had to do quite a bit of research and parts shopping to get every last piece that I need and make it work with the GT2860 turbos, but it does work and is not hard to do. Proves that the previous owner(s) just did not want to. While I was there I set the preload for the wastegates to 0,9bar to hopefully make it easier for the tuner to hit the 370hp I need for the legal inspections that will follow later on. Boost can always go up if necessary. Fitted a AN10 line from the catch can to the intake hose to make the catchcan and hopefully the cam covers a slight vacuum to have less restrictive oil returns from the head and not have mud build up as harshly in the lines and catch can. Removed the entire front interior just shy of the dashboard itself to clean up some of the absolutely horrendous wiring, (hopefully) fix the bumpy tacho and put in LED bulbs while I was there. Also put in bulbs where there was none before, like the airbag one. I also used that chance to remove the LED rpm gauge on the steering column, which was also wired in absolute horror show fashion. Moved the 4in1 Prosport gauge from sitting in front of the OEM oil pressure gauge to the center console vents, I used a 3D printed vent piece to hold that gauge there. The HKB steering wheel boss was likely on incorrectly as I sometimes noticed the indicator reset being uneven for left vs. right. In the meantime also installed an airbag delete resistor, as one should. Installed Cube Speed premium short shifter. Feels pretty nice, hope it'll work great too when I actually get to drive. Also put on a fancy Dragon Ball shift knob, cause why not. My buddy was kind enough to weld the rust hole in the back, it was basically rusted through in the lowermost corner of the passenger side trunk area where the wheel arch, trunk panel and rear quarter all meet. Obviously there is still a lot of crustiness in various areas but as long as it's not rusted out I'll just treat and isolate the corrosion and pretend it's not there. Also had to put down a new ground wire for the rear subframe as the original one was BARELY there. Probably a bit controversial depending on who you ask about this... but I ended up just covering the crack in the side of the engine block, the one above the oil feed, with JB Weld. I used a generous amount and roughed up the whole area with a Dremel before, so I hope this will hold the coolant where it should be for the foreseeable future. Did a cam cover gasket job as the half moons were a bit leaky, and there too one could see the people who worked on this car before me were absolute tools. The same half moons were probably used like 3 times without even cleaning the old RTV off. Dremeled out the inside of the flange where the turbine housing mates onto the exhaust manifolds so the diameter matches, as the OEM exhaust manifolds are even narrower than the turbine housings as we all know. Even if this doesn't do much, I had them out anyways, so can't harm. Ideally one would port-match both the turbo and the manifold to the gasket size but I really didn't feel up to disassembling the turbine housings. Wrapped turbo outlet dumps in heat wrap band. Will do the frontpipe again as well as now the oil leak which promted me to tear apart half the engine in the first place is hopefully fixed. Fitted an ATI super damper to get rid of the worn old harmonic balancer. Surely one of the easiest and most worth to do mods. But torquing that ARP bolt to spec was a bitch without being able to lock the flywheel. Did some minor adjustments in the ECU tables to change some things I didn't like, like the launch control that was ALWAYS active. Treated rusty spots and surface corrosion on places I could get to and on many spots under the car, not pretty or ideal but good enough for now. Removed the N1 rear spats and the carbon surrounding for the tailpipe to put them back on with new adhesive as the old one was lifting in many spots, not pretty. Took out the passenger rear lamp housing... what do you know. Amateur work screwed me again here as they were glued in hard and removing it took a lot of force, so I broke one of the housing bolts off. And when removing the adhesive from the chassis the paint came right off too. Thankfully all the damaged area won't be visible later, but whoever did the very limited bodywork on this car needs to have their limbs chopped off piece by piece.   Quite a list if I do say so myself, but a lot of time was spent just discovering new shit that is wrong with the car and finding a solution or parts to fix it. My last problem that I now have the headache of dealing with is that the exhaust studs on the turbo outlets are M10x1.25 threaded, but the previous owner already put on regular M10 nuts so the threads are... weird. I only found this out the hard way. So now I will just try if I can in any way fit the front pipe regardless, if not I'll have to redo the studs with the turbos installed. Lesson learned for the future: Redo ALL studs you put your hands on, especially if they are old and the previous owners were inept maniacs. Thanks for reading if you did, will update when the engine runs again. Hope nothing breaks or leaks and I can do a test drive.
