OK the last post made me realise I had kinda forgot about all this, quick update on the last 5-6mths.

- Took a few months of and got house projects done while exploring employement options.
- Got a new job, still in tech but not fully, wide mix of stuff in the PD.
- Bought an FG XR6 as the LandCruiser was too thirsty as a daily lack of safety bothered me.
- Kept that a few months while I decided what to do with work, sold that and the Landcruiser after starting the new job. Got a Prado as that ticks all the boxes between both the others, has a few mods. Had that for a couple weeks only.
- Have been out exploring/learning the car and 4wd in general, has been good.
- Got a chainsaw, 2 actually, cut and split a lot of wood, kind of enjoy it lol, Learned how to cut properly from a local group, learned how to sharpen chains etc, no loss of limbs yet. Built wood shed to accomodate, will build bigger one in spring.
- Got a couple sheep, awesome mowers, but they escaped a handful of times. Did some fencing, escaped some more lol, got fencer coming this week for mad fencing work.
- Lots of house projects, upgrading, replacing, maintenance etc, learning lots. Had all the girls birthdays/parties etc.
- Life has been busy AF.

So cars - Prado has deluxe winch bar, BP51 2" lift kit, recovery points, KO2s, dual batteries, onboard compressor and some additional plugs in the rear, good GB, snorkel, side steps, etc. Will get some more mods moving forward.

Started with some LED high and low beam upgrades from Stedi, need to be aimed a little better I think and rotated to get a nice beam pattern. Also have panel filter on the way (dry), will do an airbox mod at the same time, exhaust priced (approx 2k for full system - coated extractors, twin 2.5" into single 2.5" with high flow cats etc). Might also got a basic tune and that would be it for power/economy, car is petrol so a bit heavier on fuel than diesel. Made the call to stick with Petrol after reading all the issues with Diesels,  sooooo much less hassle with maintenance/repair, caring about fuels/EGTs, noise, smell, etc. Petrol is much nicer to drive (I test drove Jeep, Pajero, Fortuner, Older/Newer Prado etc before settling on this).

Beyond that, basic winch, stereo upgrade to modernise/add front camera/sensors, might get a basic roof basket/platform and I have my awning from the 80 to put on if I get there.

Some pics of the beast and a few spots we've been exploring added below.

Wanting to mod has made me keen to get back in to the Silvia so I spent some time in the shed recently "starting" to unpack and sort things, it's a brothel. Car has been started a handful of times and that's it =\

Trying to get motivated again.

I know the feels with the motivation and the money pit and time taken to get mine sorted too.

Hoping I can get my S13 club rego'd soon.

Do you have any pics of the way you made the aluminium spliter? Are the edges rolled at front? Trying to get ideas on how to do one.

Club rego... ahh that would be nice but I don't think I'll manage to get a RWC now lol

I thought there were a few pics in this thread actually? Showing the cut piecem reinforcing etc. I know there were pics of the V1 on NS that was MDF. Read on from here, click the arrow top right, not the title link.

It's not aluminium though it's alumalite, the stuff sign builders use so drop by any sign builder locally and grab one, get the 4mm sheet though, I got 3mm accidentally and it flexes a little too much, hence the bracing.

I've seen full aluminium and it was heavy as and still flexed. This is fairly light, quite forgiving, but is an aluminium skin over a composite centre. The edges are just as they came off the jigsaw.

Only minor shed progress.

Been swapping in LED's to the Prado, LED high and low beam as mentioned, added parkers, interior, and number plate lights. Still got door lights, reverse and indicators to go.

Missus got me a recovery kit for my birthday, bought myself a winch, spare tool kit and a throttle controller too, on the way.

Spoke to exhaust shop, will drop by soon so he can look at the car and work out what he needs to order. Stressed I want it quiet.

Also considering having him make me up a cleaner intake pipe, the factory one is a mess. See pic.

The airbox starts out at like 3.5 to 4" or so then tapers down to the throttle body size of around 3" or so, havent measured. Has 2 acousting damper things on it and is just messy and bulky.

My thought was powder coated mandrel bent intake pipe, some nice black joiners, but do I go long conical reducer, usually about 8" long, to have similar reduction in size like the factory pipe or just got a basic step down silicon joiner at the airbox and leave the pipe size same as TB?

My understanding was having the pipe size same as TB all the way may improive air speed and response at the expense of top end power (which I don't care about).

Jealous of the areas you have to go out in the 4wd. Wish I had owned one when I was down there. How you finding the prado?

Just do a 3 inch intake as easier to get adapters and will flow nicer without size changes.

Prado is excellent dual purpose car. Comfy/quiet enough to be daily with enough mod cons. Capable enough for weekend fun, getting around my place etc Very happy so far. Just needs a little more poke and improved economy. Hopefully intake and exhaust will help on both fronts. Decide on a tune after that.

Am yet to tow with it, confident it will not tow as well as Territory which has more torque down low and weighs less. Terri used to tow in 6 at 110 and return about 16-18L.

Prado won't like 110 with 2T behind it, especially with 1 less gear and less low down torque. Expect 20L+

  • 2 weeks later...

Added throttle controller and did some airbox mods, nice increase in response and general eagerness to get up to speed/drop a gear etc.

Just grabbed the kings controller, options are dynamic, sport, race. I've been back and forth between dynamic and sport, like them both for different reasons but will settle on sport I think.

Looking at tune options at the moment as the gains appear to be quite decent, may do that instead of exhaust and see what I thnk as it's cheaper (approix 1.3 vs 2.1ish) and would mean the car could stay nice and quiet.

Winch is on the way, just the Domin8r Xtreme, also bought a "bush mechanic" tool kit to stay in the car/up at the house so my tools can go back to the shed.

Getting freight quotes, think I have it sorted.

Will be sending engine gear off to builder soon.

Should I put the motor in an 86/s14a...

I need 5 stud, a Z32, and some more roof clearance/better cage... would it be easier to just buy a roller. I go back and forth on this a lot, but first things first. Engine.

Chatted with the builder last night, went through the list of stuff I have vs needed. I petty much have it all which is good.

I'll put that stuff together hopefully this weekend and get it in to the freight depot.

Unboxed the winch, in its current config it wont work in the car as I mistakenly assumed the gearbox could be rotated like pretty much every other winch...

Current config would have clutch knob athe back which is no good, if I can at least rotate it 180degrees I might get away with it at the front, see what they say.

Checklist completed and everything boxed up, aiming to drop it off Wednesday morning to the depot. Had to remove/find a couple extra parts and was reminded how much cool shit is in those boxes.

Also finished winch install, happy with how it came out, need to spool it on under tension and do some testing.

All the parts are now with the freight company, expecting delivery to occur next week. Don't worry, as I get progress pics you'll get them too.

Shout out to my man @Dose Pipe Sutututu for yet again hooking me up with the best pricing on some parts I needed drop shipped to the destination.

Between the Silvia and the GT-R You've saved me some good $$ and made buying stuff easier.

Also, check out this engine oil cap breather combo I came across, looks like an interesting bit of gear.

Spoke with DM Motorsport, told there's no huge rush on the engine as I have so much other stuff to do that this car is not going anywhere for quite a while. Block will be CNC'd with the next batch rather than being rushed through etc.

Got out for some snow play on the weekend, was good,  threw many snow balls.

Currently going back and forth between DM and the freight company to try and get this shit delivered.

Freight company keeps leaving it til late in the day before calling, including late last night, to try and arrange delivery for the next day, despite me telling them he needs more notice than that.

I dropped that stuff off on the 7th... Why is it so hard for tradie types to follow basic intructions? It does my head in.

Seems I have stuffed another battery im the silvia also by letting it get flattened as I went down to start it, having done that rejuvenate charge 2 weeks ago, and it wouldn't crank.

I will try again and leave it a week and see if it can hold a charge that long. Thing I might change to a more forgiving battery type and forget the massive 1-2kg saving.

So, 2 weeks after dropping my gear off at the freight place, not only has he not delivered it, but now it's been given to another freight company in Sydney to deliver because he just couldn't manage to make a call and arrange a time to deliver it...

Not stoked.

    • Wow, thanks for your help guys 🙏. I really appreciate it. Thanks @Rezz, if i fail finding any new or used, full or partial set of original Stage carpets i will come back to you for sure 😉 Explenation is right there, i just missed it 🤦‍♂️. Thanks for pointing out. @soviet_merlin in the meantime, I received a reply from nengun, and i quote: "Thanks for your message and interest in Nengun. KG4900 is for the full set of floor mats, while KG4911 is only the Driver's Floor Mat. FR, RH means Front Right Hand Side. All the Full Set options are now discontinued. However, the Driver's Floor Mat options are still available according to the latest information available to us. We do not know what the differences would be, but if you only want the one mat, we can certainly see what we can find out for you". Interesting. It seems they still have some "new old stock" that Duncan mentioned 🤔. I wonder if they can provide any photos......And i also just realized that amayama have G4900 sets. I'm tempted too.
    • Any update on this one? did you manage to get it fixed?    i'm having the same issue with my r34 and i believe its to do with the smart entry (keyless) control module but cant be sure without forking out to get a replacement
    • So this being my first contribution to the SAU forums, I'd like to present and show how I had to solve probably one of the most annoying fixes on any car I've owned: replacing a speedometer (or "speedo") sensor on my newly acquired Series 1 Stagea 260RS Autech Version. I'm simply documenting how I went about to fix this issue, and as I understand it is relatively rare to happen to this generation of cars, it is a gigantic PITA so I hope this helps serve as reference to anyone else who may encounter this issue. NOTE: Although I say this is meant for the 260RS, because the gearbox/drivetrain is shared with the R33 GTR with the 5-speed manual, the application should be exactly the same. Background So after driving my new-to-me Stagea for about 1500km, one night while driving home the speedometer and odometer suddenly stopped working. No clunking noise, no indication something was broken, the speedometer would just stop reading anything and the odometer stopped going up. This is a huge worry for me, because my car is relatively low mileage (only 45k km when purchased) so although I plan to own the car for a long time, a mismatched odometer reading would be hugely detrimental to resale should the day come to sell the car. Thankfully this only occurred a mile or two from home so it wasn't extremely significant. Also, the OCD part of me would be extremely irked if the numbers that showed on my dash doesn't match the actual ageing of the car. Diagnosing I had been in communication with the well renown GTR shop in the USA, U.P.garage up near University Point in Washington state. After some back and forth they said it could be one of two things: 1) The speedometer sensor that goes into the transfer case is broken 2) The actual cluster has a component that went kaput. They said this is common in older Nissan gauge clusters and that would indicate a rebuild is necessary. As I tried to figure out if it was problem #1, I resolved problem #2 by sending my cluster over to Relentless Motorsports in Dallas, TX, whom is local to me and does cluster and ECU rebuilds. He is a one man operation who meticulously replaces every chip, resistor, capacitor, and electronic component on the PCB's on a wide variety of classic and modern cars. His specialty is Lexus and Toyota, but he came highly recommended by Erik of U.P.garage since he does the rebuilds for them on GTR clusters.  For those that don't know, on R32 and R33 GTR gearboxes, the speedometer sensor is mounted in the transfer case and is purely an analog mini "generator" (opposite of an alternator essentially). Based on the speed the sensor spins it generates an AC sine wave voltage up to 5V, and sends that via two wires up to the cluster which then interprets it via the speedometer dial. The signal does NOT go to the ECU first, the wiring goes to the cluster first then the ECU after (or so I'm told).  Problems/Roadblocks I first removed the part from the car on the underside of the transfer case (drain your transfer case fluid/ATF first, guess who found out that the hard way?), and noted the transfer case fluid was EXTREMELY black, most likely never changed on my car. When attempting to turn the gears it felt extremely gritty, as if something was binding the shaft from rotating properly. I got absolutely no voltage reading out of the sensor no matter how fast I turned the shaft. After having to reflow the solder on my AFM sensors based on another SAU guide here, I attempted to disassemble the silicone seal on the back of the sensor to see what happened inside the sensor; turns out, it basically disintegrated itself. Wonderful. Not only had the electrical components destroyed themselves, the magnetic portion on what I thought was on the shaft also chipped and was broken. Solution So solution: find a spare part right? Wrong. Nissan has long discontinued the proper sensor part number 32702-21U19, and it is no longer obtainable either through Nissan NSA or Nissan Japan. I was SOL without proper speed or mileage readings unless I figured out a way to replace this sensor. After tons of Googling and searching on SAU, I found that there IS however a sensor that looks almost exactly like the R33/260RS one: a sensor meant for the R33/R34 GTT and GTS-T with the 5 speed manual. The part number was 25010-21U00, and the body, plug, and shaft all looked exactly the same. The gear was different at the end, but knowing the sensor's gear is held on with a circlip, I figured I could just order the part and swap the gears. Cue me ordering a new part from JustJap down in Kirrawee, NSW, then waiting almost 3 weeks for shipping and customs clearing. The part finally arrives and what did I find? The freaking shaft lengths don't match. $&%* I discussed with Erik how to proceed, and figuring that I basically destroyed the sensor trying to get the shaft out of the damaged sensor from my car. we deemed it too dangerous to try and attempt to swap shafts to the correct length. I had to find a local CNC machinist to help me cut and notch down the shaft. After tons of frantic calling on a Friday afternoon, I managed to get hold of someone and he said he'd be able to do it over half a week. I sent him photos and had him take measurements to match not only the correct length and notch fitment, but also a groove to machine out to hold the retentive circlip. And the end result? *chef's kiss* Perfect. Since I didn't have pliers with me when I picked up the items, I tested the old gear and circlip on. Perfect fit. After that it was simply swapping out the plug bracket to the new sensor, mount it on the transfer case, refill with ATF/Nissan Matic Fluid D, then test out function. Thankfully with the rebuilt cluster and the new sensor, both the speedometer and odometer and now working properly!   And there you have it. About 5-6 weeks of headaches wrapped up in a 15 minute photo essay. As I was told it is rare for sensors of this generation to die so dramatically, but you never know what could go wrong with a 25+ year old car. I HOPE that no one else has to go through this problem like I did, so with my take on a solution I hope it helps others who may encounter this issue in the future. For the TL;DR: 1) Sensor breaks. 2) Find a replacement GTT/GTS-T sensor. 3) Find a CNC machinist to have you cut it down to proper specs. 4) Reinstall then pray to the JDM gods.   Hope this guide/story helps anyone else encountering this problem!

    • perhaps i should have mentioned, I plugged the unit in before i handed over to the electronics repair shop to see what damaged had been caused and the unit worked (ac controls, rear demister etc) bar the lights behind the lcd. i would assume that the diode was only to control lighting and didnt harm anything else i got the unit back from the electronics repair shop and all is well (to a point). The lights are back on and ac controls are working. im still paranoid as i beleive the repairer just put in any zener diode he could find and admitted asking chatgpt if its compatible   i do however have another issue... sometimes when i turn the ignition on, the climate control unit now goes through a diagnostics procedure which normally occurs when you disconnect and reconnect but this may be due to the below   to top everything off, and feel free to shoot me as im just about to do it myself anyway, while i was checking the newly repaired board by plugging in the climate control unit bare without the housing, i believe i may have shorted it on the headunit surround. Climate control unit still works but now the keyless entry doesnt work along with the dome light not turning on when you open the door. to add to this tricky situation, when you start the car and remove the key ( i have a turbo timer so car remains on) the keyless entry works. the dome light also works when you switch to the on position. fuses were checked and all ok ive deduced that the short somehow has messed with the smart entry control module as that is what controls the keyless entry and dome light on door opening   you guys wouldnt happen to have any experience with that topic lmao... im only laughing as its all i can do right now my self diagnosed adhd always gets me in a situation as i have no patience and want to get everything done in shortest amount of time as possible often ignoring crucial steps such as disconnecting battery when stuffing around with electronics or even placing a simple rag over the metallic headunit surround when placing a live pcb board on top of it   FML
